Electromechanical wavelength tuning of double-membrane photonic crystal cavities
We present a method for tuning the resonant wavelength of photonic crystal
cavities (PCCs) around 1.55 um. Large tuning of the PCC mode is enabled by
electromechanically controlling the separation between two parallel InGaAsP
membranes. A fabrication method to avoid sticking between the membranes is
discussed. Reversible red/blue shifting of the symmetric/anti-symmetric modes
has been observed, which provides clear evidence of the electromechanical
tuning, and a maximum shift of 10 nm with < 6 V applied bias has been obtained.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Bayesian Non-Exhaustive Classification A Case Study: Online Name Disambiguation using Temporal Record Streams
The name entity disambiguation task aims to partition the records of multiple
real-life persons so that each partition contains records pertaining to a
unique person. Most of the existing solutions for this task operate in a batch
mode, where all records to be disambiguated are initially available to the
algorithm. However, more realistic settings require that the name
disambiguation task be performed in an online fashion, in addition to, being
able to identify records of new ambiguous entities having no preexisting
records. In this work, we propose a Bayesian non-exhaustive classification
framework for solving online name disambiguation task. Our proposed method uses
a Dirichlet process prior with a Normal * Normal * Inverse Wishart data model
which enables identification of new ambiguous entities who have no records in
the training data. For online classification, we use one sweep Gibbs sampler
which is very efficient and effective. As a case study we consider
bibliographic data in a temporal stream format and disambiguate authors by
partitioning their papers into homogeneous groups. Our experimental results
demonstrate that the proposed method is better than existing methods for
performing online name disambiguation task.Comment: to appear in CIKM 201
Challenges in the Search for Perchlorate and Other Hydrated Minerals With 2.1-μm Absorptions on Mars
A previously unidentified artifact has been found in Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars targeted I/F data. It exists in a small fraction (<0.05%) of pixels within 90% of images investigated and occurs in regions of high spectral/spatial variance. This artifact mimics real mineral absorptions in width and depth and occurs most often at 1.9 and 2.1 μm, thus interfering in the search for some mineral phases, including alunite, kieserite, serpentine, and perchlorate. A filtering step in the data processing pipeline, between radiance and I/F versions of the data, convolves narrow artifacts (“spikes”) with real atmospheric absorptions in these wavelength regions to create spurious absorption-like features. The majority of previous orbital detections of alunite, kieserite, and serpentine we investigated can be confirmed using radiance and raw data, but few to none of the perchlorate detections reported in published literature remain robust over the 1.0- to 2.65-μm wavelength range
A Mutation in Amino Acid Permease AAP6 Reduces the Amino Acid Content of the Arabidopsis Sieve Elements but Leaves Aphid Herbivores Unaffected.
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the amino acid permease gene AAP6 in regulating phloem amino
acid composition and then to determine the effects of this altered diet on aphid performance. A genotype of
Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) was produced in which the function of the amino acid permease gene AAP6 (At5g49630)
was abolished. Plants homozygous for the insertionally inactivated AAP6 gene had a significantly larger mean
rosette width than the wild type and a greater number of cauline leaves. Seeds from the aap6 mutant were also
significantly larger than those from the wild-type plants. Sieve element (SE) sap was collected by aphid stylectomy
and the amino acids derivatized, separated, and quantified using Capillary Electrophoresis with Laser Induced
Fluorescence (CE-LIF). In spite of the large variation across samples, the total amino acid concentration of SE sap of the aap6 mutant plants was significantly lower than that of the wild-type plants. The concentrations of lysine,
phenylalanine, leucine, and aspartic acid were all significantly lower in concentration in the aap6 mutant plants compared with wild-type plants. This is the first direct demonstration of a physiological role for an amino acid transporter in regulating SE composition in vivo. The amino acid availability in sieve element sap is thought to be the major limiting factor for aphid growth and reproduction. Despite the changes in their diet, the aphid Myzus persicae(Sulzer) displayed only small changes in feeding behaviour on mutant plants when measured using the Electronic Penetration Graph (EPG) technique. Salivation by the aphid into the SE (E1 phase) was increased on mutant plants but there was no significant effect on other feeding EPG behaviours, or in the rate of honeydew production.
Consistent with the small effect on aphid feeding behaviour, there was only a small effect of reduced sieve element amino acid concentration on aphid reproduction. The data are discussed in relation to the regulation of phloem

A disposable electrochemical immunosensor for the determination of leptin in serum and breast milk
The preparation of a disposable electrochemical immunosensor for the quantification of the hormone leptin is described in this work. The preparation approach involved immobilization of a specific biotinylated anti-leptin antibody on the surface of streptavidin-functionalized magnetic beads (StreptMBs) and a sandwich-type immunoassay involving the target analyte, monoclonal anti-leptin, and IgG labeled with alkaline phosphatase (AP-IgG). The electrochemical transduction step was accomplished by trapping the MBs bearing the immunoconjugates onto screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) by means of an Nd magnet and measuring the electrochemical oxidation of the 1-naphthol generated in the AP enzyme reaction upon 1-naphthyl phosphate (1-NPP) additions by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). A calibration plot with a linear range between 5 and 100 pg mL 1 as well as a detection limit of 0.5 pg mL 1 (3sb/m) were achieved. This value is more than 27 times lower than that reported in the only voltammetric immunosensor for leptin described in the literature until now. The usefulness of the immunosensor was demonstrated by analyzing different types of real samples: human serum, infant powdered milk, and breast milk from a nursing mother with two months of breastfeeding
Moderators of the effect of psychological interventions on depression and anxiety in cardiac surgery patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Cardiac surgery patients may be provided with psychological interventions to counteract depression and anxiety associated with surgical procedures. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated whether intervention efficacy was impacted by type of cardiac procedure/cardiac event; control condition content; intervention duration; intervention timing; facilitator type; and risk of bias. MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched for randomized controlled trials comparing anxiety and depression outcomes, pre and post psychological and cardiac interventions. Twenty-four studies met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review (N = 2718) and 16 of those were meta-analysed (N = 1928). Depression and anxiety outcomes were reduced more in interventions that lasted longer, were delivered post-surgery, and by trained health professionals. Depression (but not anxiety) was reduced more when the experimental intervention was compared to an ‘alternative’ intervention, and when the intervention was delivered to coronary artery bypass graft patients. Anxiety (but not depression) was decreased more when interventions were delivered to implantable cardioverter defibrillator patients, and were of ‘high’ or ‘unclear’ risk of bias. In addition to estimating efficacy, future work in this domain needs to take into account the moderating effects of intervention, sample, and study characteristics
The clinical course of low back pain: a meta-analysis comparing outcomes in randomised clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies.
BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that the course of low back pain (LBP) symptoms in randomised clinical trials (RCTs) follows a pattern of large improvement regardless of the type of treatment. A similar pattern was independently observed in observational studies. However, there is an assumption that the clinical course of symptoms is particularly influenced in RCTs by mere participation in the trials. To test this assumption, the aim of our study was to compare the course of LBP in RCTs and observational studies. METHODS: Source of studies CENTRAL database for RCTs and MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE and hand search of systematic reviews for cohort studies. Studies include individuals aged 18 or over, and concern non-specific LBP. Trials had to concern primary care treatments. Data were extracted on pain intensity. Meta-regression analysis was used to compare the pooled within-group change in pain in RCTs with that in cohort studies calculated as the standardised mean change (SMC). RESULTS: 70 RCTs and 19 cohort studies were included, out of 1134 and 653 identified respectively. LBP symptoms followed a similar course in RCTs and cohort studies: a rapid improvement in the first 6 weeks followed by a smaller further improvement until 52 weeks. There was no statistically significant difference in pooled SMC between RCTs and cohort studies at any time point:- 6 weeks: RCTs: SMC 1.0 (95% CI 0.9 to 1.0) and cohorts 1.2 (0.7to 1.7); 13 weeks: RCTs 1.2 (1.1 to 1.3) and cohorts 1.0 (0.8 to 1.3); 27 weeks: RCTs 1.1 (1.0 to 1.2) and cohorts 1.2 (0.8 to 1.7); 52 weeks: RCTs 0.9 (0.8 to 1.0) and cohorts 1.1 (0.8 to 1.6). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical course of LBP symptoms followed a pattern that was similar in RCTs and cohort observational studies. In addition to a shared 'natural history', enrolment of LBP patients in clinical studies is likely to provoke responses that reflect the nonspecific effects of seeking and receiving care, independent of the study design
