Uncovering anorexia nervosa in a biofeedback clinic for bowel dysfunction
Biofeedback is a conservative treatment based on behavioural techniques, which can be used in the management of bowel dysfunction. This article reports the results of a retrospective review of the clinical notes of 87 female patients attending a biofeedback service at St Mark's Hospital, Harrow. The initial review was conducted to examine the incidence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in patients attending this service. Seven percent were found to have PCOS, which is within the normal range. However, a significant proportion of patients (11.5%) had a current history of anorexia nervosa, a higher rate than in the general population, which prompted further investigation. Using shared goal setting to improve access and equity: a mixed methods study of the Good Goals intervention
Background: Access and equity in children’s therapy services may be improved by directing clinicians’ use of resources toward specific goals that are important to patients. A practice-change intervention (titled ‘Good Goals’) was designed to achieve this. This study investigated uptake, adoption, and possible effects of that intervention in children’s occupational therapy services.
Methods: Mixed methods case studies (n = 3 services, including 46 therapists and 558 children) were conducted. The intervention was delivered over 25 weeks through face-to-face training, team workbooks, and ‘tools for change’. Data were collected before, during, and after the intervention on a range of factors using interviews, a focus group, case note analysis, routine data, document analysis, and researchers’ observations.
Results: Factors related to uptake and adoptions were: mode of intervention delivery, competing demands on therapists’ time, and leadership by service manager. Service managers and therapists reported that the intervention: helped therapists establish a shared rationale for clinical decisions; increased clarity in service provision; and improved interactions with families and schools. During the study period, therapists’ behaviours changed: identifying goals, odds ratio 2.4 (95% CI 1.5 to 3.8); agreeing goals, 3.5 (2.4 to 5.1); evaluating progress, 2.0 (1.1 to 3.5). Children’s LoT decreased by two months [95% CI −8 to +4 months] across the services. Cost per therapist trained ranged from £1,003 to £1,277, depending upon service size and therapists’ salary bands.
Conclusions: Good Goals is a promising quality improvement intervention that can be delivered and adopted in practice and may have benefits. Further research is required to evaluate its: (i) impact on patient outcomes, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and (ii) transferability to other clinical contexts
Simulation verification techniques study. Subsystem simulation validation techniques
Techniques for validation of software modules which simulate spacecraft onboard systems are discussed. An overview of the simulation software hierarchy for a shuttle mission simulator is provided. A set of guidelines for the identification of subsystem/module performance parameters and critical performance parameters are presented. Various sources of reference data to serve as standards of performance for simulation validation are identified. Environment, crew station, vehicle configuration, and vehicle dynamics simulation software are briefly discussed from the point of view of their interfaces with subsystem simulation modules. A detailed presentation of results in the area of vehicle subsystems simulation modules is included. A list of references, conclusions and recommendations are also given
Simulation verification techniques study: Simulation performance validation techniques document
Techniques and support software for the efficient performance of simulation validation are discussed. Overall validation software structure, the performance of validation at various levels of simulation integration, guidelines for check case formulation, methods for real time acquisition and formatting of data from an all up operational simulator, and methods and criteria for comparison and evaluation of simulation data are included. Vehicle subsystems modules, module integration, special test requirements, and reference data formats are also described
Drawing bobbin lace graphs, or, Fundamental cycles for a subclass of periodic graphs
In this paper, we study a class of graph drawings that arise from bobbin lace
patterns. The drawings are periodic and require a combinatorial embedding with
specific properties which we outline and demonstrate can be verified in linear
time. In addition, a lace graph drawing has a topological requirement: it
contains a set of non-contractible directed cycles which must be homotopic to
, that is, when drawn on a torus, each cycle wraps once around the minor
meridian axis and zero times around the major longitude axis. We provide an
algorithm for finding the two fundamental cycles of a canonical rectangular
schema in a supergraph that enforces this topological constraint. The polygonal
schema is then used to produce a straight-line drawing of the lace graph inside
a rectangular frame. We argue that such a polygonal schema always exists for
combinatorial embeddings satisfying the conditions of bobbin lace patterns, and
that we can therefore create a pattern, given a graph with a fixed

A Damping of the de Haas-van Alphen Oscillations in the superconducting state
Deploying a recently developed semiclassical theory of quasiparticles in the
superconducting state we study the de Haas-van Alphen effect. We find that the
oscillations have the same frequency as in the normal state but their amplitude
is reduced. We find an analytic formulae for this damping which is due to
tunnelling between semiclassical quasiparticle orbits comprising both
particle-like and hole-like segments. The quantitative predictions of the
theory are consistent with the available data.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Density-and trait-mediated effects of a parasite and a predator in a tri-trophic food web
1. Despite growing interest in ecological consequences of parasitism in food webs, relatively little is known about effects of parasites on long-term population dynamics of non-host species or about whether such effects are density- or trait- mediated.
2. We studied a tri-trophic food chain comprised of: (i) a bacterial basal resource (Serratia fonticola), (ii) an intermediate consumer (Paramecium caudatum), (iii) a top predator (Didinium nasutum), and (iv) a parasite of the intermediate consumer (Holospora undulata). A fully-factorial experimental manipulation of predator and parasite presence/absence was combined with analyses of population dynamics, modelling, and analyses of host (Paramecium) morphology and behavior.
3. Predation and parasitism each reduced the abundance of the intermediate consumer (Paramecium), and parasitism indirectly reduced the abundance of the basal resource (Serratia). However, in combination, predation and parasitism had non-additive effects on the abundance of the intermediate consumer, as well as on that of the basal resource. In both cases, the negative effect of parasitism seemed to be effaced by predation.
4. Infection of the intermediate consumer reduced predator abundance. Modelling and additional experimentation revealed that this was most likely due to parasite reduction of intermediate host abundance (a density-mediated effect), as opposed to changes in predator functional or numerical response.
5. Parasitism altered morphological and behavioural traits, by reducing host cell length and increasing the swimming speed of cells with moderate parasite loads. Additional tests showed no significant difference in Didinium feeding rate on infected and uninfected hosts, suggesting that the combination of these modifications does not affect host vulnerability to predation. However, estimated rates of encounter with Serratia based on these modifications were higher for infected Paramecium than for uninfected Paramecium.
6. A mixture of density-mediated and trait-mediated indirect effects of parasitism on non- host species creates rich and complex possibilities for effects of parasites in food webs that should be included in assessments of possible impacts of parasite eradication or introduction
Correlated radial velocity and X-ray variations in HD 154791/4U 1700+24
We present evidence for approximately 400-d variations in the radial velocity
of HD 154791 (V934 Her), the suggested optical counterpart of 4U 1700+24. The
variations are correlated with the previously reported approximately 400 d
variations in the X-ray flux of 4U 1700+24, which supports the association of
these two objects, as well as the identification of this system as the second
known X-ray binary in which a neutron star accretes from the wind of a red
giant. The HD 154791 radial velocity variations can be fit with an eccentric
orbit with period 404 +/- 3 d, amplitude K=0.75 +/- 0.12 km/s and eccentricity
e=0.26 +/- 0.15. There are also indications of variations on longer time scales
>~ 2000 d. We have re-examined all available ASM data following an unusually
large X-ray outburst in 1997-98, and confirm that the 1-d averaged 2-10 keV
X-ray flux from 4U 1700+24 is modulated with a period of 400 +/- 20 d. The mean
profile of the persistent X-ray variations was approximately sinusoidal, with
an amplitude of 0.108 +/- 0.012 ASM count/s (corresponding to 31% rms). The
epoch of X-ray maximum was approximately 40 d after the time of periastron
according to the eccentric orbital fit. If the 400 d oscillations from HD
154791/4U 1700+24 are due to orbital motion, then the system parameters are
probably close to those of the only other neutron-star symbiotic-like binary,

Equational reasoning with context-free families of string diagrams
String diagrams provide an intuitive language for expressing networks of
interacting processes graphically. A discrete representation of string
diagrams, called string graphs, allows for mechanised equational reasoning by
double-pushout rewriting. However, one often wishes to express not just single
equations, but entire families of equations between diagrams of arbitrary size.
To do this we define a class of context-free grammars, called B-ESG grammars,
that are suitable for defining entire families of string graphs, and crucially,
of string graph rewrite rules. We show that the language-membership and
match-enumeration problems are decidable for these grammars, and hence that
there is an algorithm for rewriting string graphs according to B-ESG rewrite
patterns. We also show that it is possible to reason at the level of grammars
by providing a simple method for transforming a grammar by string graph

The GHZ/W-calculus contains rational arithmetic
Graphical calculi for representing interacting quantum systems serve a number
of purposes: compositionally, intuitive graphical reasoning, and a logical
underpinning for automation. The power of these calculi stems from the fact
that they embody generalized symmetries of the structure of quantum operations,
which, for example, stretch well beyond the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism. One
such calculus takes the GHZ and W states as its basic generators. Here we show
that this language allows one to encode standard rational calculus, with the
GHZ state as multiplication, the W state as addition, the Pauli X gate as
