Double-Peaked Broad Emission Lines in NGC 4450 and Other LINERs
Spectra taken with HST reveal that NGC 4450 emits Balmer emission lines with
displaced double peaks and extremely high-velocity wings. This characteristic
line profile, previously seen in a few nearby LINERs and in a small fraction of
broad-line radio galaxies, can be interpreted as a kinematic signature of a
relativistic accretion disk. We can reproduce the observed profile with a model
for a disk with a radial range of 1000-2000 gravitational radii and inclined by
27 degrees along the line of sight. The small-aperture HST data also allow us
to detect, for the first time, the featureless continuum at optical wavelengths
in NGC 4450; the nonstellar nucleus is intrinsically very faint, with M_B =
-11.2 mag for D = 16.8 Mpc. We have examined the multiwavelength properties of
NGC 4450 collectively with those of other low-luminosity active nuclei which
possess double-peaked broad lines and find a number of common features. These
objects are all classified spectroscopically as "type 1" LINERs or closely
related objects. The nuclear luminosities are low, both in absolute terms and
relative to the Eddington rates. All of them have compact radio cores, whose
strength relative to the optical nuclear emission places them in the league of
radio-loud active nuclei. The broad-band spectral energy distributions of these
sources are most notable for their deficit of ultraviolet emission compared to
those observed in luminous Seyfert 1 nuclei and quasars. The double-peaked
broad-line radio galaxies Arp 102B and Pictor A have very similar attributes.
We discuss how these characteristics can be understood in the context of
advection-dominated accretion onto massive black holes.Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal. Latex, 15 pages, embedded

First results on the diet of the young Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio L., 1758 in the Gironde estuary
Very little is known about the diet of the European sturgeon Acipenser sturio L., 1758 in its natural environment. For juveniles, improved knowledge in this field could lead towards the determination of the species's major feeding habitats in the estuary, in order to then improve their preservation or protection. From May 1998 to March 1999, the stomach contents of 61 juveniles were collected by gastric lavage. The fish were caught during monthly trawling campaigns to monitor sturgeon migration in the Gironde estuary (southwestern France). Specimens were mainly caught during spring and summer in two areas of increased abundance. The gastric lavage method used had been previously tested on Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii Brandt, 1869 in captivity. Twelve taxa of prey were found. The highest proportions in number identified consisted of polychaetes, mainly represented by Heteromastus filiformis (Claparede, 1864) in zone 7 and Polydora Bosc, 1802 sp. in zone 1. Crustaceans were the second most abundant group of prey.
The puzzle of the soft X-ray excess in AGN: absorption or reflection?
The 2-10 keV continuum of AGN is generally well represented by a single power
law. However, at smaller energies the continuum displays an excess with respect
to the extrapolation of this power law, called the ''soft X-ray excess''. Until
now this soft X-ray excess was attributed, either to reflection of the hard
X-ray source by the accretion disk, or to the presence of an additional
comptonizing medium, giving a steep spectrum. An alternative solution proposed
by Gierlinski and Done (2004) is that a single power law well represents both
the soft and the hard X-ray emission and the impression of the soft X-ray
excess is due to absorption of a primary power law by a relativistic wind. We
examine the advantages and drawbacks of reflection versus absorption models,
and we conclude that the observed spectra can be well modeled, either by
absorption (for a strong excess), or by reflection (for a weak excess). However
the physical conditions required by the absorption models do not seem very
realistic: we would prefer an ''hybrid model''.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, abstracts SF2A-2005, published by EDP-Sciences

The origin of emission and absorption features in Ton S180 Chandra observations
We present new interpretation of Ton S180 spectrum obtained by {\it Chandra}
Spectrometer (Low Energy Transmission Grating). Several narrow absorption lines
and a few emission disk lines have been successfully fitted to the data. We
have not found any significant edges accompanying line emission. We propose the
interpretation of narrow lines consistent with the paper recently written by
Krolik (2002), where warm absorber is strongly inhomogeneous. Such situation is
possible in so called multi-phase medium, where regions with different
ionization states, densities and temperatures may coexist in thermal
equilibrium under constant pressure. We illustrate this scenario with
theoretical spectra of radiation transfered through a stratified cloud with
constant pressure (instead of constant density) computed by code {\sc titan} in
plane parallel approximation. Detected spectral features are faint and their
presence do not alter the broad band continuum. We model the broad band
continuum of Ton S180 assuming an irradiated accretion disk with a dissipative
warm skin. The set of parameters appropriate for the data cannot be determined
uniquely but models with low values of the black hole mass have too hot and
radially extended warm skin to explain the formation of soft X-ray disk lines
seen in the data.Comment: accepted to Ap
Variability of the H-beta line profiles as an indicator of orbiting bright spots in accretion disks of quasars: a case study of 3C 390.3
Here we show that in the case when double peaked emission lines originate
from outer parts of accretion disk, their variability could be caused by
perturbations in the disk emissivity. In order to test this hypothesis, we
introduced a model of disk perturbing region in the form of a single bright
spot (or flare) by a modification of the power law disk emissivity in
appropriate way. The disk emission was then analyzed using numerical
simulations based on ray-tracing method in Kerr metric and the corresponding
simulated line profiles were obtained. We applied this model to the observed
H-beta line profiles of 3C 390.3 (observed in the period 1995-1999), and
estimated the parameters of both, accretion disk and perturbing region. Our
results show that two large amplitude outbursts of the H-beta line observed in
3C 390.3 could be explained by successive occurrences of two bright spots on
approaching side of the disk. These bright spots are either moving, originating
in the inner regions of the disk and spiralling outwards by crossing small
distances during the period of several years, or stationary. In both cases,
their widths increase with time, indicating that they most likely decay.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in Ap
Aperiodic Ising model on the Bethe lattice: Exact results
We consider the Ising model on the Bethe lattice with aperiodic modulation of
the couplings, which has been studied numerically in Phys. Rev. E 77, 041113
(2008). Here we present a relevance-irrelevance criterion and solve the
critical behavior exactly for marginal aperiodic sequences. We present
analytical formulae for the continuously varying critical exponents and discuss
a relationship with the (surface) critical behavior of the aperiodic quantum
Ising chain.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, minor correction
SiNx:Tb3+--Yb3+, an efficient down-conversion layer compatible with a silicon solar cell process
SiN x : Tb 3+-Yb 3+, an efficient down-conversion layer compatible with
silicon solar cell process Abstract Tb 3+-Yb 3+ co-doped SiN x down-conversion
layers compatible with silicon Photovoltaic Technology were prepared by
reactive magnetron co-sputtering. Efficient sensitization of Tb 3+ ions through
a SiN x host matrix and cooperative energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Yb 3+
ions were evidenced as driving mechanisms of the down-conversion process. In
this paper, the film composition and microstructure are investigated alongside
their optical properties, with the aim of maximizing the rare earth ions
incorporation and emission efficiency. An optimized layer achieving the highest
Yb 3+ emission intensity was obtained by reactive magnetron co-sputtering in a
nitride rich atmosphere for 1.2 W/cm and 0.15 W/cm power density
applied on the Tb and Yb targets, respectively. It was determined that
depositing at 200 {\textdegree}C and annealing at 850 {\textdegree}C leads to
comparable Yb 3+ emission intensity than depositing at 500 {\textdegree}C and
annealing at 600 {\textdegree}C, which is promising for applications toward
silicon solar cells.Comment: Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, Elsevier, 201
Propofol 1% versus propofol 2% in children undergoing minor ENT surgery
Background. The induction characteristics of propofol 1% and 2% were compared in children undergoing ENT surgery, in a prospective, randomized, double‐blind study. Methods. One hundred and eight children received propofol 1% (n=55) or 2% (n=53) for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia. For induction, propofol 4mgkg-1 was injected at a constant rate (1200mlh-1), supplemented with alfentanil. Intubating conditions without the use of a neuromuscular blocking agent were scored. Results. Pain on injection occurred in 9% and 21% of patients after propofol 1% and 2%, respectively (P=0.09). Loss of consciousness was more rapid with propofol 2% compared with propofol 1% (47s vs 54s; P=0.02). Spontaneous movements during induction occurred in 22% and 34% (P=0.18), and intubating conditions were satisfactory in 87% and 96% (P=0.19) of children receiving propofol 1% or 2%, respectively. There were no differences between the two groups in respect of haemodynamic changes or adverse events. Conclusions. For the end‐points tested, propofol 1% and propofol 2% are similar for induction of anaesthesia in children undergoing minor ENT surgery. Br J Anaesth 2003: 90: 375-
