    Get PDF

Game Changer A TV documentary about the cultural industry of E-Sports

"Game Changer" is a documentary discussing E-Sport and its stand in today’s cultural industry. The aim of this documentary is to offer a vision of E-Sports that is renewed, far from the common depiction the genre receives in the media. It proposes a discussion on the current state of E-Sports in the world of entertainment, discusses the coverage it receives in the media, and finally tries to answer if E- Sports are in fact sports or not. Game Changer is an 18 minutes’ documentary, interviewing three professionals within the E-Sports industry; Alex Blaike, PR and Social Manager for ESL Australia, Gael Parpex Director of the Associations “Générations E-Sport”, “Competition E- Sport” and co-founder of “Ma Team E-Sport” and finally Justin McNolley “MiracU” Pro-player for “Team Solo Mid” (TSM). They bring their experience and knowledge of the field, for us to make sense of what the culture is about, and give an insightful view on the genre, with the help of visuals and voice over. It analyses the treatment Gaming and E-Sports receives in the media, pointing it out its unfairness, proposing that there might have been a recent shift, due to the growing popularity of the genre. It also draws the similarities between Sport and E- Sports, proposing that the development, growth, and institutionalization of both disciplines into spectator sports, a primary form of entertainment, promotes E-Sports as an important media actor of today’s society

Assessing the Ability of the DDES Turbulence Modeling Approach to Simulate the Wake of a Bluff Body

A detailed numerical investigation of the flow behind a square cylinder at a Reynolds number of 21,400 is conducted to assess the ability of the delayed detached-eddy simulation (DDES) modeling approach to accurately predict the velocity recovery in the wake of a bluff body. Three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) and DDES simulations making use of the Spalart–Allmaras turbulence model are carried out using the open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) toolbox OpenFOAM-2.1.x, and are compared with available experimental velocity measurements. It is found that the DDES simulation tends to overestimate the averaged streamwise velocity component, especially in the near wake, but a better agreement with the experimental data is observed further downstream of the body. The velocity fluctuations also match reasonably well with the experimental data. Moreover, it is found that the spanwise domain length has a significant impact on the flow, especially regarding the fluctuations of the drag coefficient. Nonetheless, for both the averaged and fluctuating velocity components, the DDES approach is shown to be superior to the URANS approach. Therefore, for engineering purposes, it is found that the DDES approach is a suitable choice to simulate and characterize the velocity recovery in a wake

Electrical and optical measurements of the bandgap energy of a light-emitting diode

International audienceSemiconductors materials are at the basis of electronics. Most electronic devices are made of semiconductors. The operation of these components is well described by quantum physics which is a little mysterious to students. One of the intrinsic parameters of semiconductors is their bandgap energy Eg. In the case of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) Eg fixes the colour of the light emitted by the diodes. We propose in this article a lab work allowing a comparison of Eg of a green LED obtained by both electrical and optical measurements. The two slightly different results can be explained by the theoritical knowledges of the students on solid physics and electronic devices internal architecture

An introduction to photocatalysis through methylene blue photodegradation

    No full text
International audienceWe described a simple experimental setup for a lab work on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by T iO 2 nanoparticles. The photocatalysis process can be used for many applications. Treatments for diluted wastewaters industries, air purifying in underground car parks, preventing fouling on glass surfaces, these are some of the things this phenomenon has the ability to do. The described experiment is easy to perform and the interpretation can be easily adapted to different level of students: from high school students demonstrating their interests on a sustainable development, to students who are getting Masters in the science department that want to propose a full explanation of all the phenomenon of the photocatalytic process. Starting by a description of the experimental setup , we analysed the photocatalyst nanoparticles and applied the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model to our experimental data. Finally we discussed shortly on the respective energetic levels of the photocatalyst semiconductor and the methylene blue

International audienceA rhenium tris-carbonyl derivative has been designed to couple infrared and luminescent detection in cells. Both spectroscopies are consistent with one another; they point out the reliability of the present SCoMPI (for Single Core Multimodal Probe for Imaging) for bimodal imaging and unambiguously indicate a localization at the Golgi apparatus in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells

Predictive toxicology using systemic biology and liver microfluidic "on chip" approaches: Application to acetaminophen injury

    Get PDF
International audienceWe have analyzed transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic profiles of hepatoma cells cultivated inside a microfluidic biochip with or without acetaminophen (APAP). Without APAP, the results show an adaptive cellular response to the microfluidic environment, leading to the induction of anti-oxidative stress and cytoprotective pathways. In presence of APAP, calcium homeostasis perturbation, lipid peroxidation and cell death are observed. These effects can be attributed to APAP metabolism into its highly reactive metabolite. N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI). That toxicity pathway was confirmed by the detection of GSH-APAP, the large production of 2-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxybutyrate, and methionine, cystine, and histidine consumption in the treated biochips. Those metabolites have been reported as specific biomarkers of hepatotoxicity and glutathione depletion in the literature. In addition, the integration of the metabolomic, transcriptomic and proteomic collected profiles allowed a more complete reconstruction of the APAP injury pathways. To our knowledge, this work is the first example of a global integration of microfluidic biochip data in toxicity assessment. Our results demonstrate the potential of that new approach to predictive toxicology
