Multiplicities for LHC Nuclear Collisions Using HERA Structure Functions

We compute in QCD perturbation theory the transverse energy carried by gluons, quarks and antiquarks with $p_T\ge p_0\approx 2$ GeV in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5500$ $A$GeV by using structure functions compatible with the small-$x$ increase observed at HERA. This gives a perturbative estimate for the energy and entropy density of the bulk system at times $\tau\sim 0.1$ fm. The predicted initial gluon entropy density gives a lower limit of about 2200...3400 for the final charged multiplicity. Two adaptation processes in auditory hair cells together can provide an active amplifier

The hair cells of the vertebrate inner ear convert mechanical stimuli to electrical signals. Two adaptation mechanisms are known to modify the ionic current flowing through the transduction channels of the hair bundles: a rapid process involves calcium ions binding to the channels; and a slower adaptation is associated with the movement of myosin motors. We present a mathematical model of the hair cell which demonstrates that the combination of these two mechanisms can produce `self-tuned critical oscillations', i.e. maintain the hair bundle at the threshold of an oscillatory instability. The characteristic frequency depends on the geometry of the bundle and on the calcium dynamics, but is independent of channel kinetics. Poised on the verge of vibrating, the hair bundle acts as an active amplifier. However, if the hair cell is sufficiently perturbed, other dynamical regimes can occur. Global initiatives for improving hospital care for children: State of the art and future prospects

Deficiencies in the quality of health care are major limiting factors to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals for child and maternal health. Quality of patient care in hospitals is firmly on the agendas of Western countries, but has been slower to gain traction in developing countries, despite evidence that there is substantial scope for improvement, that hospitals have a major role in child survival and that inequities in quality may be as important as inequities in access. There is now substantial global experience of strategies and interventions that improve the quality of care for children in hospitals with limited resources. WHO has developed a toolkit containing adaptable instruments, including a framework for quality improvement, evidence-based clinical guidelines in the form of the Pocketbook of Hospital Care for Children, teaching material, assessment and mortality audit tools. These tools have been field-tested by doctors, nurses and other child health workers in many developing countries. This collective experience was brought together in a global WHO meeting in Bali in 2007. This article describes how many countries are achieving improvements in quality of paediatric care, despite limited resources and other major obstacles, and how the evidence has progressed in recent years from documenting the nature and scope of the problems to describing the effectiveness of innovative interventions. The challenges remain to bring these and other strategies to scale, and to support research into their use, impact and sustainability in different environments
