Food Expenses in the Rhythm of Daily Life. An Analysis of Household Accounts

The subject of detailed analysis presented in the article is the daily shopping and food expenses incurred by a single family resident in a large Polish city in the period of the People’s Republic of Poland. The source material for the analysis is the ledger of daily food expenses originating from a set of household accounts in the household of a female clerk in Łódź, which in its entirety covers the period from August 1952 to August 2004. The analysis presented herein, however, is based on a detailed analysis of records pertaining to only three selected months of the autumn of 1960, that is expenses dated from 1st September to 30th November 1960. The main aim of the analysis is not to exhaustively document the specificity of the period of the People’s Republic of Poland, but only to present the source material and its interpretative capability, as well as to show a small section from the picture of daily life revealed by one family’s three-month expenses. The author demonstrates that a detailed description of the daily shopping may constitute a very clear illustration of the specificity of private life in the given time and cultural space, as well as a reflection of not only the socio-economic, but also the political conditions in which the shopping is done

The stylistic aspect of Polish wills

Testament in the Polish culture is an administrative-legal genre, accomplished in its own style of the genre, based on the official and legal style. In the stylistic aspect it shows authoritarianism, impersonality, templatedness and meticulousness of expression. As an example of the legal discourse it tends to be unambiguous, logical, concrete, and it contains specialist terminology related to dispositions of the estate in contemplation of death. It refers manly to the material sphere of life, yet it implies abundance of various hidden feelings: love, gratitude, attachment, hatred, contempt, or revenge. The most popular and expansive type of the genre is a notarial will executed in the form of a notarial deed. Holographic wills are realized more freely, with use of elements of colloquial style, may include expressive speech acts or take the form of an informal letter. The stylistic form of allographic and oral wills is similar to a report. Notarial testaments are becoming dominant and influence the linguistic shape of all other types of the genre. Lack of legal verbosity in a document, while meeting the requirement concerning appointment of an heir, date and testator’s signature, does not invalidate the legal force of the utterance

Artykuł przedstawia przegląd różnych stanowisk wobec zastosowania tłumaczenia dydaktycznego w nauczaniu jpjo. Obecnie dużą popularnością cieszy się podejście umiarkowane, oparte na założeniu, że należy stosować wszystkie techniki nauczania, które są skuteczne w nauczaniu języka obcego. Pomocą w przygotowaniu efektywnych ćwiczeń translatorycznych służą badania kontrastywne. Artykuł podaje zasady, jakich należy przestrzegać przy zastosowaniu technik tłumaczeniowych, przykładowe typy ćwiczeń translacyjnych oraz określa elementy systemu języka, których można uczyć za pomocą przekładu.The article presents a review of different attitudes towards the application of pedagogic translation in teaching Polish to foreigners. The moderate attitude towards pedagogic translation, which is based on the assumption that we should adopt all techniques that prove effective in foreign language acquisition, seems to be prevailing in language pedagogy nowadays. Contrastive studies are helpful while creating translation exercises. The article presents principles of the translation techniques, exemplary types of translation exercises and a list of elements of the language system that can be taught by means of translation

“About God at war”. Forms and features of religious Internet folklore pertaining to the Russo-Ukrainian war

The article focuses on the issue of religious online folklore disseminated in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the popular social media platform Facebook (Ukrainian version), between April and June 2022. The aim of the analysis of the collected material presented in the text is to show the basic forms and functions of religious folklore in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war, their relationship with other messages of religious content (prayers, appeals and supplications) and the specificity of Internet communication. The authors undertake to show the connections the studied messages exhibit with religious thinking and the Christian tradition on a verbal and visual level, as well as the identity of the Ukrainian people. They also point to the importance of Internet communication in times of helplessness and deep crisis.Artykuł dotyczy problematyki religijnego folkloru internetowego, jaki upowszechniany był w związku z inwazją Rosji na Ukrainę na popularnym portalu społecznościowym Facebook (wersja ukraińska), od kwietnia do czerwca 2022 roku. Wave-induced bedload transport – a study of the southern Baltic coastal zone

The wave-induced bedload transport and spatial distribution of its magnitude in the southern Baltic coastal zone of Poland are estimated. The vicinity of Lubiatowo was selected as a representative part of the Polish coast. It was assumed that transport is a function of shear stress; alternative approaches, based on force balances and discharge relationships, were not considered in the present study. Four models were studied and compared over a wide range of bottom shear stress and wind-wave conditions. The set of models comprises classic theories that assume a simplified influence of turbulence on sediment transport (e.g., advocated by authors such as Du Boys, Meyer-Peter and Müller, Ribberink, Engelund and Hansen). It is shown that these models allow to estimate transport comparable to measured values under similar environmental conditions. A united general model for bedload transport is proposed, and a set of maps of wave bedload transport for various wind conditions in the study area is presented

Summary as a genre of speech in teaching Polish as a foreign language

Summary is one of the basic mediation activities, widely used in everyday language communication. It is an important skill in learning a foreign language since it allows for improvement of other language and intellectual skills: reading, understanding, analysing, distinguishing important from less important information, reasoning, logical thinking, concise expression of thoughts, and creating coherent texts; it also helps in remembering the content. At the same time, it prepares learners to act as language and cultural mediators. The author of the article encourages teaching this important skill based on the concept of a genre pattern, including a description of its four aspects: structural, pragmatic, cognitive, and stylistic. Additionally, she discusses a scientific summary, i.e. abstract, especially useful to students undertaking studies in the Polish language. She presents different ways of creating a summary as well as techniques and type of exercises/tasks related to working with a text subject to such activity. Finally, types of tasks preparing for writing a summary based on a sample text at B2/C1 level will be presented. In conclusion, acquiring the competence to summarise oral and written communications will bring many long-term benefits to learners, both in further education and/or professional work, and in other aspects of communication practice.Streszczenie to jedno z podstawowych działań mediacyjnych, powszechnie stosowanych w codziennej komunikacji językowej. Jest ważną umiejętnością w procesie nauki języka obcego, gdyż umożliwia doskonalenie innych sprawności językowych i intelektualnych: czytania, rozumienia, analizowania, odróżniania informacji ważnych od mniej istotnych, wnioskowania, logicznego myślenia, zwięzłego wyrażania myśli i budowania spójnych tekstów; pomaga też w zapamiętywaniu treści. Jednocześnie przygotowuje uczących się do pełnienia roli mediatorów językowych i kulturowych. Autorka artykułu zachęca do kształcenia tej ważnej umiejętności w oparciu o koncepcję wzorca gatunkowego, zawierającego opis czterech aspektów: strukturalnego, pragmatycznego, poznawczego i stylistycznego. Ponadto omawia streszczenie naukowe, tj. abstrakt, szczególnie przydatny cudzoziemcom, podejmującym studia w języku polskim. Pokazuje różne sposoby dokonywania streszczenia oraz techniki i typy ćwiczeń/ zadań związanych z pracą z tekstem, poddawanym takiemu działaniu. Na koniec przedstawia propozycje zadań przygotowujących do pisania streszczenia na podstawie przykładowego tekstu na poziomie B2/C1. W konkluzji stwierdza, że nabycie kompetencji streszczania wypowiedzi ustnych i pisemnych będzie przynosić uczącym się wiele długofalowych korzyści, zarówno w dalszej edukacji i/lub pracy zawodowej, jak i innych typach praktyki komunikacyjnej

How a gathering becomes a holiday. Modern social practices of migrants from flooded zones in Ukraine

The article presents the modern practices of remembering sunken Ukrainian villages at annual or periodic gatherings of migrants from flooded areas in various regions of Ukraine. It describes the subsequent stages of organising such events, from spontaneous visits to the flooded place to a solemn meeting of the villagers on the banks of the reservoir. It also discusses the ritualised mechanisms and means by which an ordinary meeting of group of people is transformed into a festival through the sacralisation of the gathering’s time and place (by building memorials, such as chapels, crosses or monuments, the publication of memoirs, organization of exhibitions, etc.), through the appropriate selection of participants and the use of suitable identifiers of a celebration time (e.g. a shared meal, musical accompaniment, the performance of special songs, the use of national costumes, the taking of memorial photographs).W artykule zostały przedstawione współczesne praktyki upamiętniania zatopionych wsi ukraińskich, podejmowane w trakcie corocznych lub okazjonalnych spotkań przesiedleńców z terenów zalanych w różnych regionach Ukrainy. Opisano kolejne etapy organizowania tego rodzajudziałań, od spontanicznych odwiedzin zalanego miejsca do uroczystych spotkań mieszkańców wsi nad brzegiem zbiornika wodnego. Ukazano zrytualizowane mechanizmy i środki, dzięki którym zwykłe spotkanie grupy ludzi nabiera charakteru święta poprzez sakralizację czasu i miejsca spotkania (budowanie obiektów pamięci, takich jak kaplice, krzyże, pomniki, publikację wspomnień, organizację wystaw itp.), dobór uczestników, wykorzystanie odpowiednich identyfikatorów świętowania (wspólna uczta, akompaniament muzyczny, wykonywanie pieśni okolicznościowych, użycie strojów ludowych, pamiątkowe fotografie)
