    Variant configuration for IT-services and its impact on the service request fulfillment process

    IT organizations are currently facing a trade-off between standardization and customer individuality. Standardization is onemeans to realize scale economies, is prerequisite to automate the delivery of IT-services and hence a possibility to cut costs.Best-practice frameworks like ITIL also drive the standardization efforts by defining IT-service catalogues and standardprocesses. Upcoming or rather ongoing trends like on-demand computing require standardization to assure efficientallocation of resources. But on the other hand customers of IT-services are confronted with increasing competition in theirbusiness that provokes individuality of their processes. Consequently IT-services must also be adjustable or customizable tomeet the customers’ needs. The resulting variety must be handled efficiently by the IT organization to stay or becomecompetitive. One means to cope with variety in the service request fulfillment process is variant configuration. In ourcontribution we discuss how variant configuration mechanisms can be applied on IT-services and what impact variantconfiguration has for the service request fulfillment process

    Challenges in IT Supply Chain Management

    Multiple players are involved in the process of service provision in today’s IT industry. IT service is mostly a combination of process output of different IT service providers. A single IT department is still unable to produce and deliver the entirety of the desired IT service without the risk of inefficiency. Additionally, the emerging trend of IT outsourcing over the past years accelerates the separation of service provision. Therefore it could be useful to examine the entire IT service chain to avoid failures and to save time due to lacks of information or not standardized communication processes. As a possibility to face these problems, traditional industry branches developed and introduced a new management task called supply chain management. With this in mind the following paper focuses on challenges in IT supply chain management to improve communication processes between separate IT service providers of the IT industry

    Financing the Sustainable Management of Rwanda’s Protected Areas

    Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park is a biodiversity hotspot with the most endemic species in the ecoregion as well as the highest number of threatened species internationally. In addition to great biological diversity, Nyungwe National Park supplies significant ecosystem services to the Rwandan population including water provisioning and tourism services. Tourism in the Park has strong potential for improving the sustainable management of the Park for continued provision of natural habitat and critical ecosystem services. This paper explores quantitatively the economic impacts of adjustment in Park visitation fees and tourism demand as a source of revenues to improve Park tourism opportunities and ongoing operations and maintenance where budgetary restrictions are particularly acute. The methods developed in this paper are novel in integrating the results of stated preference techniques with regional economy-wide modelling approaches to capture multi-sectoral, direct, indirect and induced impacts. Such methods have strong potential for assessing revenue generation alternatives in other contexts where Park Managers are faced with the need to generate additional revenue for sustainable park management while facing diminishing budget allocations.Centro de Estudios Distributivos, Laborales y Sociales (CEDLAS

    Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene Over Poly(furfuryl alcohol)-Derived CMK-1 Carbon Replica

    Poly(furfuryl alcohol) was introduced into a pore system of MCM-48 silica by the precipitation polycondensation of furfuryl alcohol (FA). The complete filling of the pores without the deposition of significant amounts of polymer on the external surface of MCM-48 was obtained at the FA/MCM-48 mass ratio close to 1.0. The final structure of carbon replica was formed by subsequent carbonization and extraction of SiO2 with HF. The carbonization temperature strongly influenced the surface composition of the formed carbon replicas. The highest catalytic activity in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene was observed for CMK-1 with the highest concentration of phenol and carbonyl groups, recognized as active sites of the studied reaction.This work was supported by the National Science Centre under the Grant No. 2013/09/B/ST5/03419.     Neuronal Redox-Imbalance in Rett Syndrome Affects Mitochondria as Well as Cytosol, and Is Accompanied by Intensified Mitochondrial O2 Consumption and ROS Release

    Rett syndrome (RTT), an X chromosome-linked neurodevelopmental disorder affecting almost exclusively females, is associated with various mitochondrial alterations. Mitochondria are swollen, show altered respiratory rates, and their inner membrane is leaking protons. To advance the understanding of these disturbances and clarify their link to redox impairment and oxidative stress, we assessed mitochondrial respiration in defined brain regions and cardiac tissue of male wildtype (WT) and MeCP2-deficient (Mecp2-/y) mice. Also, we quantified for the first time neuronal redox-balance with subcellular resolution in cytosol and mitochondrial matrix. Quantitative roGFP1 redox imaging revealed more oxidized conditions in the cytosol of Mecp2-/y hippocampal neurons than in WT neurons. Furthermore, cytosol and mitochondria of Mecp2-/y neurons showed exaggerated redox-responses to hypoxia and cell-endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Biochemical analyzes exclude disease-related increases in mitochondrial mass in Mecp2-/y hippocampus and cortex. Protein levels of complex I core constituents were slightly lower in Mecp2-/y hippocampus and cortex than in WT; those of complex V were lower in Mecp2-/y cortex. Respiratory supercomplex-formation did not differ among genotypes. Yet, supplied with the complex II substrate succinate, mitochondria of Mecp2-/y cortex and hippocampus consumed more O2 than WT. Furthermore, mitochondria from Mecp2-/y hippocampus and cortex mediated an enhanced oxidative burden. In conclusion, we further advanced the molecular understanding of mitochondrial dysfunction in RTT. Intensified mitochondrial O2 consumption, increased mitochondrial ROS generation and disturbed redox balance in mitochondria and cytosol may represent a causal chain, which provokes dysregulated proteins, oxidative tissue damage, and contributes to neuronal network dysfunction in RTT

    In Vitro Antiproliferative and Antioxidant Effects of Extracts from Rubus caesius

    The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of different extracts and subfractions from Rubus caesius leaves on two human colon cancer cell lines obtained from two stages of the disease progression lines HT29 and SW948. Tested samples inhibited the viability of cells, both HT29 and SW948 lines, in a concentration-dependent manner. The most active was the ethyl acetate fraction which, applied at the highest concentration (250 μg/mL), decreased the viability of cells (HT29 and SW948) below 66%. The extracts and subfractions were also investigated for antioxidant activities on DPPH and FRAP assays. All extracts, with the exception of water extract at a dose of 250 μg/mL, almost totally reduced DPPH. The highest Fe3+ ion reduction was shown for the diethyl and ethyl acetate fractions. It was more than 6.5 times higher (at a dose 250 μg/mL) as compared to the control. The LC-MS studies of the analysed preparations showed that all samples contain a wide variety of polyphenolics, among which ellagitannins turned out to be the main constituents with dominant ellagic acid, sanguiin H-6, and flavonol derivatives
