Demographic data, pain, mobility and grip force, and radiologic evolution before and after surgery were determined. Results: Seven patients, with an average age of 58 years-old. Average follow-up of 16 months. After PRC there was an improvement of mobility and grip force. Four of the seven patients were pain-free. Six patients were able to return to work. One patient developed arthritis of the wrist, being subjected to a wrist arthrodesis one year after surgery. Results: PRC is a good intervention for advanced arthritis of the radiocarpal joint
Enhancement of the mechanical and thermal properties of injection-molded polylactide parts by the addition of acrylated epoxidized soybean oil
[EN] Thiswork reports the effect of acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) addition on the mechanical, thermal, and thermomechanical properties of polylactide (PLA) parts obtained by injection molding. To this end, AESO, a chemically multi-functionalized vegetable oil, was incorporated into PLA during melt processing. The PLA parts with AESO contents in the 2.5¿7.5 wt% range showed a remarkable enhancement in both elongation at break and impact-absorbed energy while their tensile and flexural strength as well as thermomechanical properties were maintained or slightly improved. Additionally, the AESO-containing PLA parts presented higher thermal stability and lower crystallinity. The improvement achievedwas ascribed to a dual effect of plasticization in combination with a chain-extension and/or cross-linking process of the PLA chains by the highly reactive acrylate and epoxy groups present in AESO. The use of AESO thus represents an environmentally friendly solution to obtain toughened PLA materials of high interest in, for instance, rigid packaging, automotive or building and construction applications. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) [grant numbers MAT2014-59242-C2-1-R & AGL2015-63855-C2-1-R].
Retrospective review of clinical notes. Data regarding to the surgical treatments. Functional outcomes (Grace-Eversmann). Residual radius deformity was analyzed measuring the radius curvature. Pearson's correlation coefficient was measured between radius curvature and functional outcome. Data of 20 patients attended between 1972 and 2005 are reviewed. Surgical treatment was open reduction and internal fíxation in 70% patients. The outcome was excellent in 50 % and poor in 20%. La major curve of the radius was between 5mm -20 mm. We haven't seen correlation in the variables studied. We haven't seen between the curvature of the radius and functional outcome any correlation in patients treated surgically of ulna and radius fractures
Carbonic nanoparticles and C-S-H insertion into cementitious nanocomposite
Use of nanomaterials in cementitious nanocomposites is a possibility to improving mechanical properties as well as increased durability. In this research the insertion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and particles of Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H) with Ca/Si=0.8 and Ca/Si=1.2 ratios were used in microconcrete specimens. The effects on the compressive and tensile strength were tested, besides analysis of the porous structure by mercury intrusion, as well as the microstructure by scanning electron microscopy. Nanocomposites were produced by varying NTCPM insertions at 0.1% and 0.2% and C-S-H inserts at 1% and 2%, all of them based on cement mass. The results showed that the nanocomposites with C-S-H insertion with Ca/Si=0.8 ratio were the least porous and presented the highest tensile and compressive strengths, reaching strength increases in the order of 30% compared to the control material because C-S-H insertion with Ca/Si=0.8 ratio is reactive and causes reduction of the total porosity
NUTRITIONAL ACCUMULATION FOR SALAD AND ITALIAN TOMATOES GROWN IN A PROTECTED ENVIRONMENT
ABSTRACT Tomato cultivation in a protected environment is an important tool for increasing yield, quality, and regularity of production. However, nutrient imbalance in this production system can lead to short-and long-term losses. This study aimed to characterize plant growth and nutrient accumulation and export of two tomato hybrids of the Salad (‘Stella TY’) and Italian (‘HS 1188’) groups in a protected environment and determine the accumulated thermal sum. The treatments consisted of evaluation times. Dry mass and nutrient accumulation could be determined by a sigmoidal non-linear model for both hybrids grown in the protected environment. The cumulative nutrient order was K > Ca > N > S > Mg > P > Mn > Zn > Fe > Cu > B for ‘Stella TY’ and K > N > Ca > S > P > Mg > Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu > B for ‘HS1188’, with yields of 105.7 and 103.4 t ha−1, respectively. The accumulated thermal sum was 1851.7 degree days at 126 days after transplanting (DAT)
Voluntary Bilateral Scapulothoracic Dissociation
tudy design: Case report.
Objective: To report a rare case of voluntary scapulothoracic dislocation and its treatment.
Background data: Scapulothoracic dissociation is a rare condition. We report a case of a teenager who could volun- tarily dislocate her scapulae.
Results: The patient was treated surgically by fixating her scapula to the contralateral transverse process and carrying out associated muscle plication. Now, after a 12-year follow-up, the patient is asymptomatic.
Conclusions: Fixation of the scapula to the contralateral transverse process and plication of associated muscles is a valid treatment for this condition
Nonreferral of possible soft tissue sarcomas in adults: a dangerous omission in policy
Introduction. The aim of this study is to compare outcomes in three groups of STS patients treated in our specialist centre: patients referred immediately after an inadequate initial treatment, patients referred after a local recurrence, and patients referred directly, prior to any treatment. Patients and methods. We reviewed all our nonmetastatic extremity-STS patients with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. We compared three patient groups: those referred directly to our centre (group A), those referred after an inadequate initial excision (group B), and patients with local recurrence (group C). Results. The study included 174 patients. Disease-free survival was 73%, 76%, and 28% in groups A, B, and C, respectively (P < .001). Depth, size, and histologic grade influenced the outcome in groups A and B, but not in C. Conclusion. Initial wide surgical treatment is the main factor that determines local control, being even more important than the known intrinsic prognostic factors of tumour size, depth, and histologic grade. The influence on outcome of initial wide local excision (WLE), which is made possible by referral to a specialist centre, is paramount
