    Hydrodynamic lift of vesicles under shear flow in microgravity

    The dynamics of a vesicle suspension in a shear flow between parallel plates has been investigated under microgravity conditions, where vesicles are only submitted to hydrodynamic effects such as lift forces due to the presence of walls and drag forces. The temporal evolution of the spatial distribution of the vesicles has been recorded thanks to digital holographic microscopy, during parabolic flights and under normal gravity conditions. The collected data demonstrates that vesicles are pushed away from the walls with a lift velocity proportional to γ˙R3/z2\dot{\gamma} R^3/z^2 where γ˙\dot{\gamma} is the shear rate, RR the vesicle radius and zz its distance from the wall. This scaling as well as the dependence of the lift velocity upon vesicle aspect ratio are consistent with theoretical predictions by Olla [J. Phys.     Fatal anaphylactic sting reaction in a patient with mastocytosis

    We report on a 33-year-old female patient with indolent systemic mastocytosis and urticaria pigmentosa who died of an anaphylactic reaction after a yellow jacket sting. As she had no history of previous anaphylactic sting reaction, there was no testing performed in order to detect hymenoptera venom sensitization. But even if a sensitization had been diagnosed, no venom immunotherapy (VIT) would have been recommended. It is almost certain that VIT would have saved her life and it is most likely that VIT is indicated in some patients with mastocytosis with no history of anaphylactic sting reaction. However, no criteria have been established in order to allow a selection of mastocytosis patients eligible for such a `prophylactic' VIT. Copyright (C) 2008 S. Karger AG, Basel

    Le Programme cantonal Diabète souhaite collecter des indicateurs afin d'objectiver son suivi et produire un Baromètre Diabète Vaud qui serait publié et distribué périodiquement à un public large. Ce rapport présente les indicateurs suggérés par l'IUMSP, mandaté afin d'établir une liste raisonnée d'indicateurs sur le diabète pour le canton de Vaud. La sélection d'indicateurs s'est faite d'après plusieurs critères, parmi lesquels la disponibilité des indicateurs actuelle et à long terme, ainsi que leur pertinence avérée par la littérature. Ce rapport décrit les résultats pour les indicateurs sélectionnés, ainsi que les informations nécessaires à leur compréhension : source, fréquence de mise à disposition, méthode de calcul, limites, références éventuelles. Parmi les indicateurs décrits dans ce rapport, certains sont proposés comme spécialement pertinents à inclure dans le futur Baromètre Diabète Vaud. Aussi, une suggestion de présentation de ces indicateurs (fiches descriptives) est articulée pour ce dernier

    Chlamydia control activities in Europe: cross-sectional survey

    Background: Chlamydia is the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection in Europe. The objective of the Screening for Chlamydia in Europe (SCREen) project was to describe current and planned chlamydia control activities in Europe. Methods: The authors sent a questionnaire asking about different aspects of chlamydia epidemiology and control to public health and clinical experts in each country in 2007. The principles of sexually transmitted infection control were used to develop a typology comprising five categories of chlamydia control activities. Each country was assigned to a category, based on responses to the questionnaire. Results: Experts in 29 of 33 (88%) invited countries responded. Thirteen of 29 countries (45%) had no current chlamydia control activities. Six countries in this group stated that there were plans to introduce chlamydia screening programmes. There were five countries (17%) with case management guidelines only. Three countries (10%) also recommended case finding amongst partners of diagnosed chlamydia cases or people with another sexually transmitted infection. Six countries (21%) further specified groups of asymptomatic people eligible for opportunistic chlamydia testing. Two countries (7%) reported a chlamydia screening programme. There was no consistent association between the per capita gross domestic product of a country and the intensity of chlamydia control activities (P = 0.816). Conclusion: A newly developed classification system allowed the breadth of ongoing national chlamydia control activities to be described and categorized. Chlamydia control strategies should ensure that clinical guidelines to optimize chlamydia diagnosis and case management have been implemented before considering the appropriateness of screening programmes

    Renormalization of the asymptotically expanded Yang-Mills spectral action

    We study renormalizability aspects of the spectral action for the Yang-Mills system on a flat 4-dimensional background manifold, focusing on its asymptotic expansion. Interpreting the latter as a higher-derivative gauge theory, a power-counting argument shows that it is superrenormalizable. We determine the counterterms at one-loop using zeta function regularization in a background field gauge and establish their gauge invariance. Consequently, the corresponding field theory can be renormalized by a simple shift of the spectral function appearing in the spectral action. This manuscript provides more details than the shorter companion paper, where we have used a (formal) quantum action principle to arrive at gauge invariance of the counterterms. Here, we give in addition an explicit expression for the gauge propagator and compare to recent results in the literature.Comment: 28 pages; revised version.     Trypanosoma evansi is the causative agent of trypanosomosis and affects a wide variety of domestic and wild animals, with horses being the main affected. The objective of this work is to describe an outbreak of trypanosomosis due to T. evansi in twenty (20) horses with symptoms characterized by progressive weight loss, loss of appetite, intermittent hyperthermia, weakness, lymphoadenomegaly, pale mucous membranes, nasal secretions and epiphora, edemas in the chest area, abdomen and later members. The diagnosis was positive for T. evansi. The treatment consisted of diminacin aceturate without satisfactory results. This work is the first report of death of horses by T. evansi with parasitological and molecular diagnosis in the town of Monte Caseros, Corrientes, Argentina.Trypanosoma evansi, el agente causal de la tripanosomosis, afecta a una amplia variedad de animales domésticos y silvestres, siendo los equinos los principales enfermados. El objetivo de este trabajo fue describir un brote de tripanosomosis por T. evansi en veinte (20) equinos con sintomatología caracterizada por una progresiva pérdida de peso, inapetencia, hipertermia intermitente, debilidad, linfoadenomegalia, mucosas pálidas, secreciones nasales, epífora, edemas en zona de pecho, abdomen y miembros posteriores. El diagnóstico parasitológico y molecular fue positivo para T. evansi. Los animales fueron tratados con aceturato de diminacina sin resultados satisfactorios. Este trabajo es el primer reporte de mortandad de equinos por T. evansi con diagnóstico parasitológico y molecular, en la localidad de Monte Caseros, Corrientes, Argentina

    Why is the bandwidth of sodium observed to be narrower in photoemission experiments?

    The experimentally predicted narrowing in the bandwidth of sodium is interpreted in terms of the non-local self-energy effect on quasi-particle energies of the electron liquid. The calculated self-energy correction is a monotonically increasing function of the wavenumber variable. The usual analysis of photo-emission experiments assumes the final state energies on the nearly-free-electron-like model and hence it incorrectly ascribes the non-local self-energy correction to the final state energies to the occupied state energies, thus leading to a seeming narrowing in the bandwidth.Comment: 9 page

    Larotrectinib efficacy and safety in TRK fusion cancer: An expanded clinical dataset showing consistency in an age and tumor agnostic approach

    Background: TRK fusion cancer results from gene fusions involving NTRK1, NTRK2 or NTRK3. Larotrectinib, the first selective TRK inhibitor, has demonstrated an overall response rate (ORR) of 75% with a favorable safety profile in the first 55 consecutively enrolled adult and pediatric patients with TRK fusion cancer (Drilon et al.,NEJM2018). Here, we report the clinical activity of larotrectinib in an additional 35 TRK fusion cancer patients and provide updated follow-up of the primary analysis set (PAS) of 55 patients as of 19thFeb 2018. Methods: Patients with TRK fusion cancer detected by molecular profiling from 3 larotrectinib clinical trials (NCT02122913, NCT02637687, and NCT02576431) were eligible.Larotrectinib was administered until disease progression, withdrawal, or unacceptable toxicity. Disease status was assessed using RECIST version 1.1. Results: As of Feb 2018, by independent review, 6 PRs in the PAS deepened to CRs. The median duration of response (DoR) and progression-free survival in the PAS had still not been reached, with 12.9 months median follow-up. At 1 year, 69% of responses were ongoing, 58% of patients remained progression-free and 90% of patients were alive. An additional 19 children and 25 adults (age range, 0.1-78 years) with TRK fusion cancer were enrolled after the PAS, and included cancers of the salivary gland, thyroid, lung, colon, melanoma, sarcoma, GIST and congenital mesoblastic nephroma. In 35 evaluable patients, the ORR by investigator assessment was 74% (5 CR, 21 PR, 6 SD, 2 PD, 1 not determined). In these patients, with median follow-up of 5.5 months, median DoR had not yet been reached, and 88% of responses were ongoing at 6 months, consistent with the PAS. Adverse events (AEs) were predominantly grade 1, with dizziness, increased AST/ALT, fatigue, nausea and constipation the most common AEs reported in ≥ 10% of patients. No AE of grade 3 or 4 related to larotrectinib occurred in more than 5% of patients. Conclusions: TRK fusions are detected in a broad range of tumor types. Larotrectinib is an effective age- and tumor-agnostic treatment for TRK fusion cancer with a positive safety profile. Screening patients for NTRK gene fusions in solid- and brain tumors should be actively considered
