Financial markets in the Southern African development community: the harmonisation and approximation of commercial laws
The free flow of capital has been identified as a critical factor in the process of reducing poverty in the SADC region, along with the lowering of trade barriers. While the trade protocols have been adopted and much has been made of the harmonisation of stock exchange listing requirements and central banking regulation, it is an effort at harmonising corporate law that is noticeably absent. This article focuses on the harmonisation of business law including the supporting financial markets and the process of corporate law reform in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe
Comparing the Cardio Stress Index of a training population with university students

The correlation between cardio stress and visual skills
Armed forces recruits were tested
during a six month period of intense basic training. Data was collected at the start, after 12
weeks and 20 weeks. Means indicated significant decreases in cardio stress and increases in
visual skills performance after 12 weeks and 20 weeks. Results indicate that cardio stress has a

Comparison of the performances of male and female armed services recruits undergoing sports vision testing
Research has shown that a strong correlation exists between vision and performance. In the sporting environment, it is believed that athletes perform better than non-athletes and males perform better than females. In this study we used sports vision to compare performance between males and females. One hundred and thirty male and one hundred female armed service recruits were tested, using techniques of visualization, eye-hand coordination, focusing, sequencing, tracking and reflexes. Previous research has shown that the difference in performance in both males and females is the result of brain lateralization, test familiarity and nerve conduction velocity in the brain. This was, however, not reflected in the study. Results showed a significant difference in performance with regard to visualization (p=0.006), tracking (p=0.048), reflexes (p=0.0001) and sequencing (p=0.046). The increased performance might become more evident with repetition of tests. Future research should therefore investigate the exact physiological mechanisms and interrelation of variables thought to affect performance.http://www.ajol.info/journal_index.php?jid=153&ab=ajpher
The effect of sport specific exercises on the visual skills of rugby players
INTRODUCTION: Visual performance is an important factor in sport excellence. Visual involvement in a sport varies according to environmental demands associated with that sport. These environmental demands are matched by a task specific motor response. The purpose of this study was to determine if sport specific exercises will improve the visual performance of male rugby players, in order to achieve maximal results on the sports field. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty six adult male rugby players, aged 16-22, were chosen as subjects. In order to evaluate the effect of sport specific exercises on visual skills, a pre-test - post-test experimental group design was adopted for the study. RESULTS: Significant differences (p≤0.05) were seen in the focussing, tracking, vergence, sequencing, eye-hand coordination and visualisation components Discussion & Conclusions: Sport specific exercises improved visual skills in rugby players which may provide them with an advantage over their opponents. This study suggests that these training programs and participation in regular on-line EyeDrills sports vision exercises (www.eyedrills.co.za) aimed at improving the athlete’s visual co-ordination, concentration, focus, hand-eye co-ordination, anticipation and motor response should be incorpotated in the rugby players exercise regime. Cardiovascular health screening among South African students
Stress is an unavoidable part of everyday life due to the demands and stressors associated with modern lifestyle. Health risks provoked by this increasingly prevalent condition lead to cardiovascular disease, which ultimately results in a poor health status. Studies have confirmed that there is a correlation between a person’s lifestyle and stress levels: sedentary lifestyles increase the risk of developing various cardiovascular conditions. Improved physical fitness is one of the lifestyle modifications proven to benefit heart health by reducing the effects of stress and its associated threats. The purpose of this study was to compare the heart health of subjects from two further education and training institutes. Institution 1 is a traditional tertiary institution that focuses on lectures, while Institution 2 provides an organised, daily physical training programme in addition to its academic programme. Subjects underwent a non-invasive ViportTM test which measures the cardio stress index (CSI), heart rate (HR), and QRS duration. Additional variables measured included: age, gender, perceived stress level, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and body mass index. Results obtained from the study indicate that students from Institution 1 (n=158) had significantly higher readings (p<0.001) than those from Institution 2 (n=128) on CSI and HR, but significantly lower readings on blood pressure (systolic and diastolic). In theory, this finding may be attributed to the fact that individuals from Institution 1 (training population) follow a set daily physical routine which improves their heart health and decreases stress- related risk.http://www.ajol.info/journal_index.php?jid=153&ab=ajpher
Global unmet needs in cardiac surgery
More than 6 billion people live outside industrialized countries and have insufficient access to cardiac surgery. Given the recently confirmed high prevailing mortality for rheumatic heart disease in many of these countries together with increasing numbers of patients needing interventions for lifestyle diseases due to an accelerating epidemiological transition, a significant need for cardiac surgery could be assumed. Yet, need estimates were largely based on extrapolated screening studies while true service levels remained unknown. A multi-author effort representing 16 high-, middle-, and low-income countries was undertaken to narrow the need assessment for cardiac surgery including rheumatic and lifestyle cardiac diseases as well as congenital heart disease on the basis of existing data deduction. Actual levels of cardiac surgery were determined in each of these countries on the basis of questionnaires, national databases, or annual reports of national societies. Need estimates range from 200 operations per million in low-income countries that are nonendemic for rheumatic heart disease to >1,000 operations per million in high-income countries representing the end of the epidemiological transition. Actually provided levels of cardiac surgery range from 0.5 per million in the assessed low- and lower-middle income countries (average 107 ± 113 per million; representing a population of 1.6 billion) to 500 in the upper-middle-income countries (average 270 ± 163 per million representing a population of 1.9 billion). By combining need estimates with the assessment of de facto provided levels of cardiac surgery, it emerged that a significant degree of underdelivery of often lifesaving open heart surgery does not only prevail in low-income countries but is also disturbingly high in middle-income countries
African horse sickness: The potential for an outbreak in disease-free regions and current disease control and elimination techniques
African horse sickness (AHS) is an arboviral disease of equids transmitted by Culicoides biting midges. The virus is endemic in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and official AHS disease-free status can be obtained from the World Organization for Animal Health on fulfilment of a number of criteria. AHS is associated with case fatality rates of up to 95%, making an outbreak among naïve horses both a welfare and economic disaster. The worldwide distributions of similar vector-borne diseases (particularly bluetongue disease of ruminants) are changing rapidly, probably due to a combination of globalisation and climate change. There is extensive evidence that the requisite conditions for an AHS epizootic currently exist in disease-free countries. In particular, although the stringent regulations enforced upon competition horses make them extremely unlikely to redistribute the virus, there are great concerns over the effects of illegal equid movement. An outbreak of AHS in a disease free region would have catastrophic effects on equine welfare and industry, particularly for international events such as the Olympic Games. While many regions have contingency plans in place to manage an outbreak of AHS, further research is urgently required if the equine industry is to avoid or effectively contain an AHS epizootic in disease-free regions. The Sneeuberg: A new centre of floristic endemism on the Great Escarpment, South Africa
The Sneeuberg mountain complex (Eastern Cape) comprises one of the most prominent sections of the Great Escarpment in southern Africa but until now has remained one of the botanically least known regions. The Sneeuberg is a discrete orographical entity, being delimited in the east by the Great Fish River valley, in the west by the Nelspoort Interval, to the south by the Plains of Camdeboo, and to the north by the Great Karoo pediplain. The highest peaks range from 2278 to 2504 m above sea level, and the summit plateaux range from 1800 to 2100 m. Following extensive literature review and a detailed collecting programme, the Sneeuberg is reported here as having a total flora of 1195 species of which 107 (9%) are alien species, 33 (2.8%) are endemic, and 13 (1.1%) near-endemic. Five species previously reported as Drakensberg Alpine Centre (DAC) endemics are now known to occur in the Sneeuberg (representing range extensions of some 300–500 km). One-hundred-and-five species (8.8%) are DAC near-endemics, with the Sneeuberg being the western limit for most of these. Ten species (0.8%) represent disjunctions across the Karoo Interval from the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) to the Sneeuberg. In all, some 23 significant range extensions, eight new species, and several rediscoveries are recorded. We conclude by recognising the Sneeuberg as a new centre of endemism along the Great Escarpment, with floristic affinities with the Albany Centre and the DAC, and links to the CFR
