Complete moduli of cubic threefolds and their intermediate Jacobians
The intermediate Jacobian map, which associates to a smooth cubic threefold
its intermediate Jacobian, does not extend to the GIT compactification of the
space of cubic threefolds, not even as a map to the Satake compactification of
the moduli space of principally polarized abelian fivefolds. A much better
"wonderful" compactification of the space of cubic threefolds was constructed
by the first and fourth authors --- it has a modular interpretation, and
divisorial normal crossing boundary. We prove that the intermediate Jacobian
map extends to a morphism from the wonderful compactification to the second
Voronoi toroidal compactification of the moduli of principally polarized
abelian fivefolds --- the first and fourth author previously showed that it
extends to the Satake compactification. Since the second Voronoi
compactification has a modular interpretation, our extended intermediate
Jacobian map encodes all of the geometric information about the degenerations
of intermediate Jacobians, and allows for the study of the geometry of cubic
threefolds via degeneration techniques. As one application we give a complete
classification of all degenerations of intermediate Jacobians of cubic

Cerebral pressure passivity in newborns with encephalopathy undergoing therapeutic hypothermia
We extended our recent modification of the power spectral estimation approach to quantify spectral coherence. We tested both the standard and the modified approaches on simulated data, which showed that the modified approach was highly specific and sensitive to the coupling introduced in the simulation while the standard approach lacked these features. We also applied the modified and standard approaches to quantify the pressure passivity in 4 infants receiving therapeutic hypothermia. This was done by measuring the coupling between continuous cerebral hemoglobin differences and mean arterial blood pressure. Our results showed that the modified approach identified a lower pressure passivity index (PPI, percent time the coherence was above a predefined threshold) than the standard approach (P = 0.0027)
Top 10 research questions to promote physical activity in bipolar disorders: A consensus statement from the International Organization of Physical Therapists in Mental Health
Background: Research has only recently started to consider the importance and applicability of physical activity (PA) for people with bipolar disorder (BD). The aim of the current study is to highlight 10 pertinent PA research questions in people with BD.
Methods: The International Organization of Physical Therapy in Mental Health executed a consultation with all National organizations (n=13) to identify the most salient questions to guide future research on PA in BD.
Results: We identified the following 10 questions: (1) What are the benefits of PA for people with BD? (2) What are the most prominent safety issues for PA prescription in BD? (3) What is the optimal PA prescription for people with BD? (4) What are the key barriers to PA among people with BD? (5) What are the most effective motivational strategies for ensuring PA adoption and maintenance in BD? (6) How do we translate PA research into community practice? (7) If one treatment goal is increased physical activity, what type of professionals are needed as part of a multidisciplinary team? (8) How do we incorporate PA as a vital sign in clinical practice? (9) How can we prevent sedentary behavior in BD? (10) What is the most appropriate PA assessment method?
Limitations: We did not consult people with BD.
Conclusions: Addressing these questions is critical for developing evidence-based approaches for promoting and sustaining an active lifestyle in BD. Ultimately, achieving this will reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease and improve the quality of life of this population
Dealing with a traumatic past: the victim hearings of the South African truth and reconciliation commission and their reconciliation discourse
In the final years of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been a worldwide tendency to approach conflict resolution from a restorative rather than from a retributive perspective. The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), with its principle of 'amnesty for truth' was a turning point. Based on my discursive research of the TRC victim hearings, I would argue that it was on a discursive level in particular that the Truth Commission has exerted/is still exerting a long-lasting impact on South African society. In this article, three of these features will be highlighted and illustrated: firstly, the TRC provided a discursive forum for thousands of ordinary citizens. Secondly, by means of testimonies from apartheid victims and perpetrators, the TRC composed an officially recognised archive of the apartheid past. Thirdly, the reconciliation discourse created at the TRC victim hearings formed a template for talking about a traumatic past, and it opened up the debate on reconciliation. By discussing these three features and their social impact, it will become clear that the way in which the apartheid past was remembered at the victim hearings seemed to have been determined, not so much by political concerns, but mainly by social needs
Factors moderating the relationship between childhood trauma and premorbid adjustment in first-episode schizophrenia

It has been proposed that
childhood trauma interferes with normal neurodevelopment, thereby establishing a biological
vulnerability to schizophrenia. Poor premorbid adjustment is frequently a precursor to
schizophrenia, and may be a manifestation of neurodevelopmental compromise. We investigated
the relationship between childhood trauma and premorbid adjustment in 77 patients
with first-episode schizophrenia spectrum disorders. We also investigated possible mediating
roles for other selected risk factors in the relationship. We found several significant correlations
between different trauma types and both social and academic premorbid adjustment
from childhood to late adolescence. There were no significant moderating effects for family
history of schizophrenia or family history of psychiatric disorder. History of obstetric complications,
substance abuse and poor motor coordination weakened some of the associations
between childhood trauma and premorbid adjustment, while poor sequencing of motor acts
strengthened the association. Our results confirm previous studies indicating an association
between childhood trauma and premorbid adjustment. Results indicate a general rather
than specific association, apparent with different types of trauma, and affecting both social
and academic components of premorbid adjustment across childhood, early and late adolescence.
Further, our results suggest a complex interplay of various risk factors, supporting

Conservation laws for vacuum tetrad gravity
Ten conservation laws in useful polynomial form are derived from a Cartan
form and Exterior Differential System (EDS) for the tetrad equations of vacuum
relativity. The Noether construction of conservation laws for well posed EDS is
introduced first, and an illustration given, deriving 15 conservation laws of
the free field Maxwell Equations from symmetries of its EDS. The Maxwell EDS
and tetrad gravity EDS have parallel structures, with their numbers of
dependent variables, numbers of generating 2-forms and generating 3-forms, and
Cartan character tables all in the ratio of 1 to 4. They have 10 corresponding
symmetries with the same Lorentz algebra, and 10 corresponding conservation

BRCA1 is required for maintenance of phospho-Chk1 and G<sub>2</sub>/M arrest during DNA cross-link repair in DT40 cells
The Fanconi anemia DNA repair pathway is pivotal for the efficient repair of DNA interstrand cross-links. Here, we show that FA-defective (Fancc(-)) DT40 cells arrest in G(2) phase following cross-link damage and trigger apoptosis. Strikingly, cell death was reduced in Fancc(-) cells by additional deletion of the BRCA1 tumor suppressor, resulting in elevated clonogenic survival. Increased resistance to cross-link damage was not due to loss of toxic BRCA1-mediated homologous recombination but rather through the loss of a G(2) checkpoint. This proapoptotic role also required the BRCA1-A complex member ABRAXAS (FAM175A). Finally, we show that BRCA1 promotes G(2) arrest and cell death by prolonging phosphorylation of Chk1 on serine 345 after DNA damage to sustain arrest. Our data imply that DNA-induced cross-link death in cells defective in the FA pathway is dependent on the ability of BRCA1 to prolong cell cycle arrest in G(2) phase
Storms drive outgassing of CO2 in the subpolar Southern Ocean
The subpolar Southern Ocean is a critical region where CO2 outgassing influences the global mean air-sea CO2 flux (FCO2). However, the processes controlling the outgassing remain elusive. We show, using a multi-glider dataset combining FCO2 and ocean turbulence, that the air-sea gradient of CO2 (∆pCO2) is modulated by synoptic storm-driven ocean variability (20 µatm, 1–10 days) through two processes. Ekman transport explains 60% of the variability, and entrainment drives strong episodic CO2 outgassing events of 2–4 mol m−2 yr−1. Extrapolation across the subpolar Southern Ocean using a process model shows how ocean fronts spatially modulate synoptic variability in ∆pCO2 (6 µatm2 average) and how spatial variations in stratification influence synoptic entrainment of deeper carbon into the mixed layer (3.5 mol m−2 yr−1 average). These results not only constrain aliased-driven uncertainties in FCO2 but also the effects of synoptic variability on slower seasonal or longer ocean physics-carbon dynamics.publishedVersio
