Simulation and measurement of hts josephson heterodyne oscillator
We report continuing investigations into practical applications of the ac Josephson effect as the basis for a voltage-tunable radio-frequency oscillator. We have previously demonstrated experimentally that useful power levels (10 s of nW) and linewidths of a few kHz can be achieved in the heterodyne output from a High-Temperature-Superconducting Resistive SQUID (HTS-RSQUID) operating in the frequency range 1-50 MHz. Those results were achieved with 2-junction R-SQUIDs incorporating current-biased shunt resistors of a few micro-ohms. We have now modified the fabrication procedures, and adjusted the shunt resistors and bias current values so that higher frequencies can be achieved. The Josephson junctions are of step-edge type, rather than the bi-crystal type used in our earlier work. The step-edge technique permits much more flexibility in the geometrical lay-out and utilizes the more cost-effective single-crystal MgO substrates. A psycho-educational investigation into a few suppositions and concepts underlying the Neuro-linguistic Programming model In the early 1970s a model was developed to identify the therapeutic methods that were used by outstanding psychologists. Eventually the so-called Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) model was introduced and this model is still used today in many fields such as in psychotherapy with children, in teaching, in the business world and so forth. The purpose of this article is to shed more light on the main presuppositions and concepts underlying the NLP model. This investigation will mainly be undertaken from a psycho-educational perspective. It will, however, also be attempted to concentrate on application possibilities (if any) of NLP concepts, taking a Christian point of departure. The most important NPL concepts will be discussed in relation to children on their way to adulthood, whether they are in therapy or in a classroom situation. In conclusion, while referring to the relevance of NLP in psycho-education, certain transcendental-critical perspectives will be provided concerning the most important concepts and presuppositions of NLP
Dark Energy and Projective Symmetry
Nurowski [arXiv:1003.1503] has recently suggested a link between the
observation of Dark Energy in cosmology and the projective equivalence of
certain Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics. Specifically, he
points out that two FLRW metrics with the same unparameterized geodesics have
their energy densities differing by a constant. From this he queries whether
the existence of dark energy is meaningful. We point out that physical
observables in cosmology are not projectively invariant and we relate the
projective symmetry uncovered by Nurowski to some previous work on projective
equivalence in cosmology
ADAMTS9-regulated pericellular matrix dynamics governs focal adhesion-dependent smooth muscle differentiation
Focal adhesions anchor cells to extracellular matrix (ECM) and direct assembly of a pre-stressed actin cytoskeleton. They act as a cellular sensor and regulator, linking ECM to the nucleus. Here, we identify proteolytic turnover of the anti-adhesive proteoglycan versican as a requirement for maintenance of smooth muscle cell (SMC) focal adhesions. Using conditional deletion in mice, we show that ADAMTS9, a secreted metalloprotease, is required for myometrial activation during late gestation and for parturition. Through knockdown of ADAMTS9 in uterine SMC, and manipulation of pericellular versican via knockdown or proteolysis, we demonstrate that regulated pericellular matrix dynamics is essential for focal adhesion maintenance. By influencing focal adhesion formation, pericellular versican acts upstream of cytoskeletal assembly and SMC differentiation. Thus, pericellular versican proteolysis by ADAMTS9 balances pro- and anti-adhesive forces to maintain an SMC phenotype, providing a concrete example of the dynamic reciprocity of cells and their ECM

Study protocol: a randomised controlled trial on the clinical effects of levothyroxine treatment for subclinical hypothyroidism in people aged 80 years and over
Background:
Subclinical hypothyroidism is common in older people and its contribution to health and disease needs to be elucidated further. Observational and clinical trial data on the clinical effects of subclinical hypothyroidism in persons aged 80 years and over is inconclusive, with some studies suggesting harm and some suggesting benefits, translating into equipoise whether levothyroxine therapy provides clinical benefits. This manuscript describes the study protocol for the Institute for Evidence-Based Medicine in Old Age (IEMO) 80-plus thyroid trial to generate the necessary evidence base.
Methods:
The IEMO 80-plus thyroid trial was explicitly designed as an ancillary experiment to the Thyroid hormone Replacement for Untreated older adults with Subclinical hypothyroidism randomised placebo controlled Trial (TRUST) with a near identical protocol and shared research infrastructure. Outcomes will be presented separately for the IEMO and TRUST 80-plus groups, as well as a pre-planned combined analysis of the 145 participants included in the IEMO trial and the 146 participants from the TRUST thyroid trial aged 80 years and over.
The IEMO 80-plus thyroid trial is a multi-centre randomised double-blind placebo-controlled parallel group trial of levothyroxine treatment in community-dwelling participants aged 80 years and over with persistent subclinical hypothyroidism (TSH ≥4.6 and ≤ 19.9 mU/L and fT4 within laboratory reference ranges). Participants are randomised to levothyroxine 25 or 50 micrograms daily or matching placebo with dose titrations according to TSH levels, for a minimum follow-up of one and a maximum of three years.
Primary study endpoints: hypothyroid physical symptoms and tiredness on the thyroid-related quality of life patient-reported outcome (ThyPRO) at one year. Secondary endpoints: generic quality of life, executive cognitive function, handgrip strength, functional ability, blood pressure, weight, body mass index, and mortality. Adverse events will be recorded with specific interest on cardiovascular endpoints such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure.
Discussion:
The combined analysis of participants in the IEMO 80-plus thyroid trial with the participants aged over 80 in the TRUST trial will provide the largest experimental evidence base on multimodal effects of levothyroxine treatment in 80-plus persons to date
Quantum walk on distinguishable non-interacting many-particles and indistinguishable two-particle
We present an investigation of many-particle quantum walks in systems of
non-interacting distinguishable particles. Along with a redistribution of the
many-particle density profile we show that the collective evolution of the
many-particle system resembles the single-particle quantum walk evolution when
the number of steps is greater than the number of particles in the system. For
non-uniform initial states we show that the quantum walks can be effectively
used to separate the basis states of the particle in position space and
grouping like state together. We also discuss a two-particle quantum walk on a
two- dimensional lattice and demonstrate an evolution leading to the
localization of both particles at the center of the lattice. Finally we discuss
the outcome of a quantum walk of two indistinguishable particles interacting at

Group testing with Random Pools: Phase Transitions and Optimal Strategy
The problem of Group Testing is to identify defective items out of a set of
objects by means of pool queries of the form "Does the pool contain at least a
defective?". The aim is of course to perform detection with the fewest possible
queries, a problem which has relevant practical applications in different
fields including molecular biology and computer science. Here we study GT in
the probabilistic setting focusing on the regime of small defective probability
and large number of objects, and . We construct and
analyze one-stage algorithms for which we establish the occurrence of a
non-detection/detection phase transition resulting in a sharp threshold, , for the number of tests. By optimizing the pool design we construct
algorithms whose detection threshold follows the optimal scaling . Then we consider two-stages algorithms and analyze their
performance for different choices of the first stage pools. In particular, via
a proper random choice of the pools, we construct algorithms which attain the
optimal value (previously determined in Ref. [16]) for the mean number of tests
