    The accessible museum: towards an understanding of international museum audio description practices

    Introduction: Audio description (AD) in museums is crucial for making them accessible for people with visual impairments. Nevertheless, there are limited museum-specific AD guidelines currently available. This research examines current varied international practitioner perspectives on museum AD, focusing on imagery, meaning, emotion and degrees of objectivity, and the regional differences (Europe, US) in AD traditions, in order to better understand how museum AD can be used to enhance access. Methods: Forty-two museum describers from 12 countries responded to a questionnaire requiring fixed-choice and free-text responses about the purpose and construction of museum AD. Results: Inference tests showed that European describers agreed more strongly than US describers that AD should ‘explore meaning’ (U = 91.00, N1 = 24, N2 = 14, p = 0.03), and ‘create an emotional experience’ (U = 89.50, N1 = 24, N2 = 14, p = 0.03), rating the use of cognitive prompts as more important (U = 85.50, N1 = 21, N2 = 14, p = 0.04). Qualitative data enriched this understanding by exploring participant responses on the themes of mental imagery, objectivity and interpretation and cognitive prompts. This highlighted broader agreement between regions on mental imagery, but more acceptance of interpretation in AD from the European respondents. Discussion: US and European describers’ opinions differ regarding the purpose of AD: whether it is about conveying visual information or whether broader interpretations should be incorporated into descriptions for audiences with visual impairments. Implications for Practitioners: These findings indicate that further discussion is needed regarding the purpose of museum AD, and in particular the way in which objectivity is contextualised. They raise questions about AD providing visual information, and/or seeking to address a wider museum experience, including the stimulation of curiosity or emotion

    Patients’ Experiences of penile Cancer

    Penile cancer is a rare but destructive disease in Western populations. In the United Kingdom, penile cancer accounts for <1% of all new cases of cancer and <1% of deaths due to cancer every year (see Table 1). [Table 1] Surgical removal of the cancer is the primary form of treatment. This involves surgical excision of the primary tumour and of involved inguinal lymph nodes. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are rarely helpful, with their use restricted either to adjuvant use or for palliative treatment of extensive disease. In treating the primary tumour, the standard of care is to provide a surgical cure (ie, excising the tumour and a margin of normal penile tissue) while maintaining the function of the penis. The traditional view was that at least a 2-cm margin of normal tissue should be removed, but recent publications suggest that more conservative surgery may be safe [1], and [2]. The advantage of such organ-preserving surgery is intuitively advantageous to the patient in that penile function can be better preserved, but the evidence to support this view is limited at present

    Conducting interviews about penile cancer: A patient-conducted-interview study

    Objectives: Penile cancer is a rare but destructive condition. It has been found to be detrimental to body image, general health and sexual functioning, while increasing anxiety and social problems. The UK now manages penile cancer through specialist multi-disciplinary teams that see at least 25 new patients a year. There is a need to understand patients’ experiences so that treatment can be improved. The aim of this research is to allow patients to participate in the development of a nationwide interview study. Methods: A one-day participative workshop where a range of men diagnosed with penile cancer design and conduct audio and video interviews exploring experiences of treatment within the group. Results: Key themes included the rehabilitation of urinary functioning and strategies for coping with the physical and social impact of treatment. Conclusions: The findings emphasise the importance of day-to-day practicalities for men treated for penile cancer, which can form the basis for larger studies about how to better understand and manage their treatment

    Behavior of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Cosmological Models in Scalar-Tensor Gravity

    We analyze solutions to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies in Brans-Dicke theory, where a scalar field is coupled to gravity. Matter is modelled by a γ\gamma-law perfect fluid, including false-vacuum energy as a special case. Through a change of variables, we reduce the field equations from fourth order to second order, and they become equivalent to a two-dimensional dynamical system. We then analyze the entire solution space of this dynamical system, and find that many qualitative features of these cosmologies can be gleaned, including standard non-inflationary or extended inflationary expansion, but also including bifurcations of stable or unstable expansion or contraction, noninflationary vacuum-energy dominated models, and several varieties of ``coasting," ``bouncing," ``hesitating," and ``vacillating" universes. It is shown that inflationary dogma, which states that a universe with curvature and dominated by inflationary matter will always approach a corresponding flat-space solution at late times, does not hold in general for the scalar-tensor theory, but rather that the occurence of inflation depends upon the initial energy of the scalar field relative to the expansion rate. In the case of flat space (k=0k=0), the dynamical system formalism generates some previously known exact power-law solutions.Comment: Slight stylistic changes and some references added.     Halo abundances within the cosmic web

    We investigate the dependence of the mass function of dark-matter haloes on their environment within the cosmic web of large-scale structure. A dependence of the halo mass function on large-scale mean density is a standard element of cosmological theory, allowing mass-dependent biasing to be understood via the peak-background split. On the assumption of a Gaussian density field, this analysis can be extended to ask how the mass function depends on the geometrical environment: clusters, filaments, sheets and voids, as classified via the tidal tensor (the Hessian matrix of the gravitational potential). In linear theory, the problem can be solved exactly, and the result is attractively simple: the conditional mass function has no explicit dependence on the local tidal field, and is a function only of the local density on the filtering scale used to define the tidal tensor. There is nevertheless a strong implicit predicted dependence on geometrical environment, because the local density couples statistically to the derivatives of the potential. We compute the predictions of this model and study the limits of their validity by comparing them to results deduced empirically from NN-body simulations. We have verified that, to a good approximation, the abundance of haloes in different environments depends only on their densities, and not on their tidal structure. In this sense we find relative differences between halo abundances in different environments with the same density which are smaller than 13%. Furthermore, for sufficiently large filtering scales, the agreement with the theoretical prediction is good, although there are important deviations from the Gaussian prediction at small, non-linear scales.
