Optical mesons
An ''optical meson'' (two-photon quantum soliton) is proven to exist in a parametric waveguide. This could provide an ideal quantum soliton environment, because of more realistic formation lengths and much larger binding energies than chi((3)) quantum solitons. We estimate the binding energy, radius, and interaction length in comparison to the chi((3)) case in optical fibers
Ideal soliton environment using parametric band gaps
Simultaneous solitary wave solutions for laser propagation in nonlinear parametric media with up to (3 + 1) dimensions are proved to exist. The combination of the large dispersion of a Bragg grating and the strong nonlinearity of chi((2)) optical material results in stable behavior with short interaction distances and low power requirements. The solutions are obtained by using the effective mass approximation to reduce the coupled propagation equations to those describing a dispersive parametric nonlinear waveguide, and are verified by solving the complete set of coupled band-gap equations numerically
Virial Expansion for a Strongly Correlated Fermi Gas
Using a high temperature virial expansion, we present a controllable study of the thermodynamics of strongly correlated Fermi gases near the BEC-BCS crossover region. We propose a practical way to determine the expansion coefficients for both harmonically trapped and homogeneous cases, and calculate the third order coefficient b3(T) at finite temperatures T. At resonance, a T-independent coefficient b3, hom -0.29095295 is determined in free space. These results are compared with a recent thermodynamic measurement of Li6 atoms, at temperatures below the degeneracy temperature, and with Monte Carlo simulations
Squeezing spectra from s-ordered quasiprobability distributions. Application to dispersive optical bistability
It is well known that the squeezing spectrum of the field exiting a nonlinear
cavity can be directly obtained from the fluctuation spectrum of normally
ordered products of creation and annihilation operators of the cavity mode. In
this article we show that the output field squeezing spectrum can be derived
also by combining the fluctuation spectra of any pair of s-ordered products of
creation and annihilation operators. The interesting result is that the
spectrum obtained in this way from the linearized Langevin equations is exact,
and this occurs in spite of the fact that no s-ordered quasiprobability
distribution verifies a true Fokker-Planck equation, i.e., the Langevin
equations used for deriving the squeezing spectrum are not exact. The
(linearized) intracavity squeezing obtained from any s-ordered distribution is
also exact. These results are exemplified in the problem of dispersive optical

Exploring the climate of Proxima B with the Met Office Unified Model

Unified Model (UM). We examine the responses of both an ‘Earth-like’ atmosphere and simplified nitrogen and trace carbon dioxide
atmosphere to the radiation likely received by Proxima Centauri B. Additionally, we explore the effects of orbital eccentricity on the
planetary conditions using a range of eccentricities guided by the observational constraints. Overall, our results are in agreement with
previous studies in suggesting Proxima Centauri B may well have surface temperatures conducive to the presence of liquid water.
Moreover, we have expanded the parameter regime over which the planet may support liquid water to higher values of eccentricity
(& 0.1) and lower incident fluxes (881.7 W m−2
) than previous work. This increased parameter space arises because of the low
sensitivity of the planet to changes in stellar flux, a consequence of the stellar spectrum and orbital configuration. However, we also
find interesting differences from previous simulations, such as cooler mean surface temperatures for the tidally-locked case. Finally,
we have produced high resolution planetary emission and reflectance spectra, and highlight signatures of gases vital to the evolution

A note on the boundary contribution with bad deformation in gauge theory
Motivated by recently progresses in the study of BCFW recursion relation with
nonzero boundary contributions for theories with scalars and
fermions\cite{Bofeng}, in this short note we continue the study of boundary
contributions of gauge theory with the bad deformation. Unlike cases with
scalars or fermions, it is hard to use Feynman diagrams directly to obtain
boundary contributions, thus we propose another method based on the SYM theory. Using this method, we are able to write down a useful
on-shell recursion relation to calculate boundary contributions from related
theories. Our result shows the cut-constructibility of gauge theory even with
the bad deformation in some generalized sense.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Basic Taste Stimuli Elicit Unique Responses in Facial Skin Blood Flow
Facial expression changes characteristically with the emotions induced by basic tastes in humans. We tested the hypothesis that the five basic tastes also elicit unique responses in facial skin blood flow. Facial skin blood flow was measured using laser speckle flowgraphy in 16 healthy subjects before and during the application of basic taste stimuli in the oral cavity for 20 s. The skin blood flow in the eyelid increased in response to sweet and umami taste stimuli, while that in the nose decreased in response to a bitter stimulus. There was a significant correlation between the subjective hedonic scores accompanying these taste stimuli and the above changes in skin blood flow. These results demonstrate that sweet, umami, and bitter tastes induce unique changes in facial skin blood flow that reflect subjective hedonic scores
UK survey of occupational therapist’s and physiotherapist’s experiences and attitudes towards hip replacement precautions and equipment
Background: Total hip replacement (THR) is one of the most common orthopaedic procedures in the United Kingdom (UK). Historically, people following THR have been provided with hip precautions and equipment such as: raised toilet seats and furniture rises, in order to reduce the risks of dislocation post-operation. The purpose of this study was to determine current practices in the provision of these interventions in the UK for people following primary THR. Methods: A 27-question, self-administered online survey was developed and distributed to UK physiotherapists and occupational therapists involved in the management of people following primary THR (target respondents). The survey included questions regarding the current practices in the provision of equipment and hip precautions for THR patients, and physiotherapist’s and occupational therapist’s attitudes towards these practices. The survey was disseminated through print and web-based/social media channels. Results: 170 health professionals (87 physiotherapists and 83 occupational therapists), responded to the survey. Commonly prescribed equipment in respondent’s health trusts were raised toilet seats (95%), toilet frames and rails (88%), furniture raises (79%), helping hands/grabbers (77%), perching stools (75%) and long-handled shoe horns (75%). Hip precautions were routinely prescribed by 97% of respondents. Hip precautions were most frequently taught in a pre-operative group (52% of respondents). Similarly equipment was most frequently provided pre-operatively (61% respondents), and most commonly by occupational therapists (74% respondents). There was variability in the advice provided on the duration of hip precautions and equipment from up to six weeks post-operatively to life-time usage. Conclusions: Current practice on hip precautions and provision of equipment is not full representative of clinician’s perceptions of best care after THR. Future research is warranted to determine whether and to whom hip precautions and equipment should be prescribed post-THR as opposed to the current ‘blanket’ provision of equipment and movement restriction provided in UK practice
Oxygenated-Blood Colour Change Thresholds for Perceived Facial Redness, Health, and Attractiveness
Blood oxygenation level is associated with cardiovascular fitness, and raising oxygenated blood colouration in human faces increases perceived health. The current study used a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) psychophysics design to quantify the oxygenated blood colour (redness) change threshold required to affect perception of facial colour, health and attractiveness. Detection thresholds for colour judgments were lower than those for health and attractiveness, which did not differ. The results suggest redness preferences do not reflect a sensory bias, rather preferences may be based on accurate indications of health status. Furthermore, results suggest perceived health and attractiveness may be perceptually equivalent when they are assessed based on facial redness. Appearance-based motivation for lifestyle change can be effective; thus future studies could assess the degree to which cardiovascular fitness increases face redness and could quantify changes in aerobic exercise needed to increase facial attractiveness
