Erik Erikson: Critical Times, Critical Theory
The work and legacy of Erik Erikson are described in this brief outline of his career, his theories, and his impact on psychoanalysis, psychology, history, and the broader culture. His conception of the adolescent task—weaving internal tastes, talents, and values together with elements of one's life history and the demands of one's culture into a coherent identity—has had profound effects on developmental psychology and the way in which sophisticated youth construct and describe their lives. His extension of development through adulthood and old age established the field of life course development. His emphasis on the impact of history and culture on development was a critical element in the developing field of ego psychology. Many of his major contributions can be fruitfully understood in the context of his personal history and individual qualities.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/43955/1/10578_2004_Article_424474.pd
Novel approaches to minimize intraoperative bleeding during endoscopic submucosal dissection of a large rectal lateral spreading tumor extended to the dentate line with internal hemorrhoids
3 páginasEndoscopic treatment of rectal lateral spreading tumors
(LSTs) extending to the dentate line with hemorrhoids is
a challenging procedure because of the risk of bleeding
and the reduced visual field caused by the dilated
venous packages and the narrow anal lumen. Although a
few Japanese reports have described the safety and effi cacy of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for
these tumors,1,2 technical approaches to reduce intraoper ative bleeding are not fully described. We present a
successful ESD of a large rectal LST that extended to
the dentate line with large internal hemorrhoids and
describe novel approaches to minimize intraoperative
bleeding.EspecializaciĂłn en GastroenterologĂaEspecialista en GastroenterologĂ

Gender effects on consumers’ symbolic and hedonic preferences and actual clothing consumption in the Czech Republic
During the last decade or so consumer products have become more divided by gender than ever before. These changes in marketing practices are likely to introduce, alter or increase any existing gender differences regarding consumers’ product preferences and actual consumption. This is a very timely study examining how gender relates to consumers’ interest in clothing artefacts and their preferences for the self- and social-symbolic and hedonic meanings of clothing. The influence of gender on actual purchase behaviour towards clothing is also explored. The proposed hypotheses are tested on a large-scale sample of some 1,000+ respondents drawn in the Czech Republic. Using analysis of variance tests, gender differences were found with regard to all but one consumer behaviour phenomenon. No gender effect was found only regarding consumer preference for clothing affiliation symbolism. The study contributes to the theoretical development and empirical evidence in the field of gendered symbolic and hedonic consumption of clothing artefacts. Its findings also suggest possible actions by fashion marketers, as well as some interesting venues for future research
Parents' and teachers' beliefs about adolescents: Effects of sex and experience
Three studies examine beliefs that parents and teachers have about adolescents. A distinction is made between category-based beliefs (concerning adolescents as a group) and target-based beliefs (concerning individual adoles cents). In Study 1, 90 late elementary and junior high school teachers indicated degree of agreement with a set of category-based statements about adolescents. Parents of early adolescents in Study 2 (N=1272) responded to category- and target-based statements. Study 3 compares the responses of teachers in Study 1 and parents in Study 2. Both teachers and parents endorsed beliefs that adolescence is difficult, and that adults can have an impact. Compared to fathers, mothers believed more in difficulty and in the negative effects of biological change on behavior. Parents of daughters believed adolescence is more difficult than parents of sons. Among teachers, amount of experience with adolescents was positively associated with the belief that adolescence is a difficult period of life. For parents, the effect of amount of experience was mixed. Experience had a greater impact on the category-based beliefs of teachers than parents. Possible influences on the origins and modification of beliefs are discussed .Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45275/1/10964_2005_Article_BF01537078.pd
