    Validation of the world food programme's food consumption score and alternative indicators of household food security:

    "The objective of this study is to validate the World Food Programme's (WFP) method of establishing the prevalence of food insecurity. WFP's method has two parts: (1) the construction of a Food Consumption Score (FCS) and (2) the classification of food security status based on the FCS. Our validation work has the following components: (1) collecting and analyzing survey data from three countries—Burundi, Haiti, and Sri Lanka—that contain information about calorie consumption at the household level and information needed to construct the FCS; (2) establishing the extent to which an assessment of food security status based on the FCS mimics food security status based on household calorie consumption; and (3) assessing whether changes to the construction of the FCS would improve its predictive power and whether such changes are feasible, given the environment in which these assessments are typically conducted. To achieve the third objective, alternative dietary diversity and food frequency indicators are constructed by either modifying WFP's calculation method for the FCS or following a different approach, such as that for the Household Dietary Diversity Score developed by the Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance Project. By comparing indicator performance, we can answer the questions of whether the FCS could be simplified by using food group diversity instead of food frequency by food group, if further disaggregation of food groups would improve its validity, and what the merits and demerits of other aspects of WFP's standard method are. Based on our findings about the validity of the FCS and the results for alternative proxy indicators, we then suggest changes to the construction of the FCS. Our findings on the usefulness of the FCS are encouraging. The same holds true for the alternative indicators of dietary diversity and food frequency we considered. There are positive and statistically significant associations with calorie consumption per capita, particularly when small quantities are excluded from food frequencies. In two out of three study sites, food frequency scores are clearly superior to simpler measures of diet diversity (food or food group count). Higher levels of disaggregation are advantageous, but with diminishing marginal returns. We note, however, that the provision of food aid seems to weaken the association of the FCS with calorie consumption. All of these observations support the use of WFP's FCS for food security assessments. However, the cutoff points used by WFP to define poor, borderline, and adequate Food Consumption Groups are too low when the FCS classification is compared to estimates of calorie deficiency from our survey data and other sources. As a food security classification device, the FCS could be improved by excluding foods consumed in small quantities from the FCS and, even more important, adjusting the cutoffs used to classify households as having poor, borderline, or acceptable food security. Minor gains in the validity of the FCS could be achieved by making several technical adjustments to the calculation of the FCS, for example, using a 12-group food classification instead of an 8-food group classification. This study has several limitations. We did not validate the proxy indicators against diet quality, because this would have required the collection of individual 24-hour recall data for all household members, which was beyond the scope of our study. The use of seven-day household recall data is a limitation for our analysis; information on dietary intakes from individual 24-hour recalls is generally considered more accurate.     Questions about knowledge in expert sport are not only of applied significance: they also take us to the heart of foundational and heavily-disputed issues in the cognitive sciences. To a first (rough and far from uncontroversial) approximation, we can think of expert ‘knowledge’ as whatever it is that grounds or is applied in (more or less) effective decision-making, especially when in a competitive situation a performer follows one course of action out of a range of possibilities. In these research areas, studies of motor expertise have for many years actively contributed to broader debates in philosophy and psychology (Abernethy, Burgess-Limerick, & Parks, 1994; Williams, Davids, & Williams, 1999). When we navigate the world flexibly and more or less successfully, how much is this due to a capacity to represent it? In considering alternative options, or planning future actions, we seem to transcend our present environment in some way: what is the balance or relation here between highly-tuned bodily dispositions and background knowledge of the world and its patterns? What changes in these regards as we gain experience and adapt to more complex and challenging environments? Is know-how fundamentally different in kind from ordinary factual knowledge of the world, or knowledge-that? And if expertise in a domain does involve or depend on a knowledge base that is somehow more organized or deeper than that of novices, how is this knowledge selectively and appropriately deployed, often under severe time constraints

    You can't always sketch what you want: Understanding Sensemaking in Visual Query Systems

    Visual query systems (VQSs) empower users to interactively search for line charts with desired visual patterns, typically specified using intuitive sketch-based interfaces. Despite decades of past work on VQSs, these efforts have not translated to adoption in practice, possibly because VQSs are largely evaluated in unrealistic lab-based settings. To remedy this gap in adoption, we collaborated with experts from three diverse domains---astronomy, genetics, and material science---via a year-long user-centered design process to develop a VQS that supports their workflow and analytical needs, and evaluate how VQSs can be used in practice. Our study results reveal that ad-hoc sketch-only querying is not as commonly used as prior work suggests, since analysts are often unable to precisely express their patterns of interest. In addition, we characterize three essential sensemaking processes supported by our enhanced VQS. We discover that participants employ all three processes, but in different proportions, depending on the analytical needs in each domain. Our findings suggest that all three sensemaking processes must be integrated in order to make future VQSs useful for a wide range of analytical inquiries.Comment: Accepted for presentation at IEEE VAST 2019, to be held October 20-25 in Vancouver, Canada.     Methods for Measuring Breadth and Depth of Knowledge

    In elite sport, the advantages demonstrated by expert performers over novices are sometimes due in part to their superior physical fitness or to their greater technical precision in executing specialist motor skills. However at the very highest levels, all competitors typically share extraordinary physical capacities and have supremely well-honed techniques. Among the extra factors which can differentiate between the best performers, psychological skills are paramount. These range from the capacities to cope under pressure and to bounce back from setbacks, to the knowledge of themselves, opponents, and the domain, which experts access and apply in performance. In the companion chapter on breadth and depth of knowledge in expert sport (see Chapter 11), we discussed the forms or kinds of knowledge deployed by elite athletes, and described some lines of research which seek to tap and study such expert knowledge (McPherson & MacMahon, 2008; McRobert, Ward, Eccles & Williams, 2011). In this chapter we focus more directly on questions about methods for measuring or more accurately assessing expert knowledge, in particular addressing a wider range of methods to help us understand what experts know. Suggesting that sport researchers can productively adopt and adapt existing qualitative methodologies for integration with more standard quantitative methods, we introduce and survey a number of areas of qualitative research in psychology

    A research paper on the training of pre-school teachers in Zimbabwe.In Zimbabwe today, the partnership scheme of association in the preparation of teachers is realised through the co-operation among Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education, teachers' colleges, the University of Zimbabwe and schools. The Department of Teachers Education monitors the sixteen teacher’s colleges in the country'. Among other things, professional activities are co-ordinated: syllabuses are scrutinized, examinations moderated including teaching practice and finally successful candidates are awarded a diploma by the University of Zimbabwe. In this scheme of association, partners aim at excellence and this cannot be achieved unless the partnership is strong. Teachers 'colleges and the University cannot succeed in the scheme of association without meaningful participation of the schools through the Regional Offices. It should be noted that educational quality, as measured by pupils, academic achievement, is a function of teacher quality. If what happens in classroom is largely determined by the action of the teacher and if teachers can learn to teach in more effective ways, then it is clear that teacher education should continue to be an important policy option to improve the quality of education. It is important to note that the scheme of association is instrumental in facilitating reforms in schools through teacher education. This paper focuses on preparing teachers to reform schools through teaching practice. Reports on schools reflect a decline in the academic performance of students and the problem of ineffective teaching approaches. There is indeed sickness in education, teachers are accused of being mediocre, and this is reflected in the poor results of most schools. In some cases the pedagogy is lacking in better teaching strategies. This matter of poor performance needs urgent attention, but we cannot improve the quality of education in schools without improving the quality of teachers

    Re-tracing the encounter: interkinaesthetic forms of knowledge in Contact Improvisation

    We adopted a phenomenological approach, directly engaging with the community of practice of the form of movement under study. We discuss some methodological approaches that we considered in investigating the lived experience of a heterogeneous group of Contact Improvisation (CI) practitioners. We delineate how such a system of movement could provide a unique example for the analysis of the interpersonal dynamics between movers with a different degree of expertise, re-tracing some common paths towards the acquisition of interkinaesthetic knowledge.Adottando un approccio fenomenologico e una partecipazione diretta nella comunità della pratica di movimento studiata, abbiamo discusso alcuni approcci metodologici che sono stati presi in esame durante l’analisi dell’esperienza vissuta da un gruppo eterogeneo di danzatori di Contact Improvisation.     The sense of agency and its role in strategic control for expert mountain bikers

    Much work on the sense of agency has focused either on abnormal cases, such as delusions of control, or on simple action tasks in the laboratory. Few studies address the nature of the sense of agency in complex natural settings, or the effect of skill on the sense of agency. Working from 2 case studies of mountain bike riding, we argue that the sense of agency in high-skill individuals incorporates awareness of multiple causal influences on action outcomes. This allows fine-grained differentiation of the contributions of self and external factors to action outcomes. We further argue that the sense of agency incorporates prospective awareness of actions that are possible in a situation and awareness of the limits of control. These forms of sense of agency enable highly flexible, context-sensitive strategic control, and are likely to contribute to high interindividual variability in responses to complex tasks

    NASA Lewis advanced IPV nickel-hydrogen technology

    Individual pressure vessel (IPV) nickel-hydrogen technology was advanced at NASA Lewis and under Lewis contracts. Some of the advancements are as follows: to use 26 percent potassium hydroxide electrolyte to improve cycle life and performance, to modify the state of the art cell design to eliminate identified failure modes and further improve cycle life, and to develop a lightweight nickel electrode to reduce battery mass, hence reduce launch and/or increase satellite payload. A breakthrough in the LEO cycle life of individual pressure vessel nickel-hydrogen battery cells was reported. The cycle life of boiler plate cells containing 26 percent KOH electrolyte was about 40,000 accelerated LEO cycles at 80 percent DOD compared to 3,500 cycles for cells containing 31 percent KOH. Results of the boiler plate cell tests have been validated at NWSC, Crane, Indiana. Forty-eight ampere-hour flight cells containing 26 and 31 percent KOH have undergone real time LEO cycle life testing at an 80 percent DOD, 10 C. The three cells containing 26 percent KOH failed on the average at cycle 19,500. The three cells containing 31 percent KOH failed on the average at cycle 6,400. Validation testing of NASA Lewis 125 Ah advanced design IPV nickel-hydrogen flight cells is also being conducted at NWSC, Crane, Indiana under a NASA Lewis contract. This consists of characterization, storage, and cycle life testing. There was no capacity degradation after 52 days of storage with the cells in the discharged state, on open circuit, 0 C, and a hydrogen pressure of 14.5 psia. The catalyzed wall wick cells have been cycled for over 22,694 cycles with no cell failures in the continuing test. All three of the non-catalyzed wall wick cells failed (cycles 9,588; 13,900; and 20,575). Cycle life test results of the Fibrex nickel electrode has demonstrated the feasibility of an improved nickel electrode giving a higher specific energy nickel-hydrogen cell. A nickel-hydrogen boiler plate cell using an 80 mil thick, 90 percent porous Fibrex nickel electrode has been cycled for 10,000 cycles at 40 percent DOD
