    Preliminary assessment of COVID-19 implications for the water and sanitation sector in Latin America and the Caribbean

    COVID-19 has had a severe impact on human health, as well as in social and economic terms, with implications for the management and governance of the water and sanitation sector. These implications are evident in Latin America and the Caribbean due to existing challenges the region faces in accessing water and sanitation services. In spite of significant advances, around 65 million people in the LAC region currently lack appropriate access to water and soap to wash their hands—one of the most basic measures to prevent the spread of disease. Furthermore, social and economic vulnerabilities have exacerbated the effects of the pandemic in the region, particularly among those living in poverty. The COVID-19 pandemic thus requires the mobilization of frameworks such as the human rights to water and sanitation, specifically considering the region’s realities. This paper provides a review of some of the challenges currently faced in the region and advances a series of recommendations for enhancing access to water, sanitation and hygiene. The importance of effective governance, management and communication strategies in the water provisioning sector is highlighted in the context of the pandemic, and the role of science and research for adequate decision making is emphasized

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     Este Livro-Catálogo procura estudar de raiz ou desenvolver o estudo sobre parte significativa do percurso de quatro artistas e professores das Escolas Industriais: Narciso Costa (1890-1969), Luís Fernandes (1895-1954), Lino António (1898-1974) e António Varela (1902-1963). Nós é uma conhecida palavra que iniciou vários manifestos logo a partir do primeiro que Courbet redigiu, em 1855, expressando protesto, proposta e, sem dúvida, uma vontade de afirmação que estes artistas também declararam. Lino António realizou em 1923 uma pintura intitulada Nós, representando os quatro e foi esta pintura o ponto de partida para o projecto de investigação, encomendado pela Câmara Municipal de Leiria. Lino António não colocou o grupo num fundo neutro, a Cidade do Lis foi o quinto retrato. Trabalho iniciado em 2016, produziu a exposição, que decorreu entre 7 de Abril de 2018 e 7 de Outubro de 2019 no Museu da Imagem em Movimento. Dividida em dois grandes núcleos: «Nós no singular» e «Nós no plural», pretendeu resgatar os artistas do esquecimento, mostrando parte da sua obra. No primeiro núcleo, apresentaram-se trabalhos que caracterizaram e identificaram individualmente cada um dos quatro artistas e mostraram-se, especialmente, as representações ou projectos de e para Leiria e o seu distrito. No caso de Narciso Costa, António Varela e Luís Fernandes, há muito que a sua obra não era exposta e vários trabalhos exibiram-se pela primeira vez. Todas estas figuras ultrapassaram o âmbito local e estudaram, viveram, trabalharam ou tiveram encomendas de outras partes do país, ou do mundo. Foi esse o conteúdo de «Nós no plural», juntamente com a correspondência que assinalou alguns desses elos. Agentes activos da cultura leiriense do início do século XX, figuras carismáticas para um núcleo muito restrito, não estavam inscritos na memória histórica nem da cidade, nem do país, à excepção de Lino António. Demonstrou-se com as obras que se puderam ver e com a investigação que se levou a cabo que o Modernismo, tendência estética que se tornou tão influente, teve diversas origens e não se centrou apenas em Lisboa ou no Porto. O Livro-Catálogo continuará a proporcionar um momento para Leiria se ver ao espelho e, identificando este grupo de artistas, se repensar, guardando lugar na história para os artistas do futuro
