    CAST: Cross-Attention in Space and Time for Video Action Recognition

    Recognizing human actions in videos requires spatial and temporal understanding. Most existing action recognition models lack a balanced spatio-temporal understanding of videos. In this work, we propose a novel two-stream architecture, called Cross-Attention in Space and Time (CAST), that achieves a balanced spatio-temporal understanding of videos using only RGB input. Our proposed bottleneck cross-attention mechanism enables the spatial and temporal expert models to exchange information and make synergistic predictions, leading to improved performance. We validate the proposed method with extensive experiments on public benchmarks with different characteristics: EPIC-KITCHENS-100, Something-Something-V2, and Kinetics-400. Our method consistently shows favorable performance across these datasets, while the performance of existing methods fluctuates depending on the dataset characteristics.Comment: This is an accepted NeurIPS 2023.     Concrete Categorical Model of a Quantum Circuit Description Language with Measurement

    In this paper, we introduce dynamic lifting to a quantum circuit-description language, following the Proto-Quipper language approach. Dynamic lifting allows programs to transfer the result of measuring quantum data - qubits - into classical data - booleans -. We propose a type system and an operational semantics for the language and we state safety properties. Next, we introduce a concrete categorical semantics for the proposed language, basing our approach on a recent model from Rios&Selinger for Proto-Quipper-M. Our approach is to construct on top of a concrete category of circuits with measurements a Kleisli category, capturing as a side effect the action of retrieving classical content out of a quantum memory. We then show a soundness result for this semantics

    As China‘s industrialization has entered full swing, transboundary pollution has swept eastward across the Manchurian Plain and the Yellow Sea into neighboring Northeast Asian countries. The desertification of Mongolia and Northwestern China due to global warming has fueled seasonal yellow dust storms descending on Korea in increased frequency and intensity in recent years, acting as a vector for various kinds of air pollution. On top of sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide that cause acid deposition which, in turn, destroys crops and forests, southeasterly winds carry fine particulate matter, aerosols, ozone, and heavy metals with more significant negative consequences on the health of humans and other species. Soaring demand for energy in China (supplied mainly by coal-fired power plants) is casting deep uncertainty on regional air quality for the future, given the historically unprecedented scale and pace of deployment of plants in such a densely populated region. It is widely assumed that coal will be China‘s principal source of energy for many decades to come, comprising as much as 70% of energy demand. According to the IEA World Energy Outlook for 2011, China will account for more than half of the global share of coal use in 2020 with conservative assumptions. However, as China rapidly becomes a major world market for internal combustion vehicles, increasing carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles are expected to contribute heavily to transboundary pollution in Asia and overtake power plants as the primary source of air pollution

    In recent years, the number of subscribers of the social network services such as Facebook and Twitter has increased rapidly. In accordance with the increasing popularity of social network services, concerns about user privacy are also growing. Existing social network services have a centralized structure that a service provider collects all the user’s profile and logs until the end of the connection. The information collected typically useful for commercial purposes, but may lead to a serious user privacy violation. The user’s profile can be compromised for malicious purposes, and even may be a tool of surveillance extremely. In this paper, we remove a centralized structure to prevent the service provider from collecting all users’ information indiscriminately, and present a decentralized structure using the web hosting server. The service provider provides only the service applications to web hosting companies, and the user should select a web hosting company that he trusts. Thus, the user’s information is distributed, and the user’s privacy is guaranteed from the service provider

    Novel genetic resources associated with sucrose and stachyose content through genome-wide association study in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)

    The nutritional value of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] for animals is influenced by soluble carbohydrates, such as sucrose and stachyose. Although sucrose is nutritionally desirable, stachyose is an antinutrient causing diarrhea and flatulence in non-ruminant animals. We conducted a genome-wide association study of 220 soybean accessions using 21,317 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the SoySNP50K iSelect Beadchip data to identify significant SNPs associated with sucrose and stachyose content. Seven significant SNPs were identified for sucrose content across chromosomes (Chrs.) 2, 8, 12, 17, and 20, while thirteen significant SNPs were identified for stachyose content across Chrs. 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 15. Among those significant SNPs, three sucrose-related SNPs on Chrs. 8 and 17 were novel, while twelve stachyose-related SNPs on Chrs. 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 15 were novel. Based on Phytozome, STRING, and GO annotation, 17 and 24 candidate genes for sucrose and stachyose content, respectively, were highly associated with the carbohydrate metabolic pathway. Among these, the publicly available RNA-seq Atlas database highlighted four candidate genes associated with sucrose (Glyma.08g361200 and Glyma.17g258100) and stachyose (Glyma.05g025300 and Glyma.13g077900) content, which had higher gene expression levels in developing seed and multiple parts of the soybean plant. The results of this study will extend knowledge of the molecular mechanism and genetic basis underlying sucrose and stachyose content in soybean seed. Furthermore, the novel candidate genes and SNPs can be valuable genetic resources that soybean breeders may utilize to modify carbohydrate profiles for animal and human usage

    Determining the Thickness of Aliphatic Alcohol Monolayers Covalently Attached to Silicon Oxide Surfaces Using Angle-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

    The thickness of alcohol based monolayers on silicon oxide surfaces were investigated using angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). Advantages of using alcohols as building blocks for the formation of monolayers include their widespread availability, ease of handling, and stability against side reactions. Recent progress in microwave assisted reactions demonstrated the ease of forming uniform monolayers with alcohol based reagents. The studies shown herein provide a detailed investigation of the thickness of monolayers prepared from a series of aliphatic alcohols of different chain lengths. Monolayers of 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, 1-octanol, 1-decanol, and 1-dodecanol were each successfully formed through microwave assisted reactions and characterized by ARXPS techniques. The thickness of these monolayers consistently increased by ∼1.0 Å for every additional methylene (CH2) within the hydrocarbon chain of the reagents. Tilt angles of the molecules covalently attached to silicon oxide surfaces were estimated to be ∼35° for each type of reagent. These results were consistent with the observations reported for thiol based or silane based monolayers on either gold or silicon oxide surfaces, respectively. The results of this study also suggest that the alcohol based monolayers are uniform at a molecular level
