The Undergraduate Community Service Experience: Changing Perceptions of Diversity

Previous research has documented many positive effects of community service on student learning. Although a few studies have discovered that community service increases student’s cultural awareness, little research has addressed concrete changes in students’ conceptualization of diversity. The current study investigates how community service participation changes the complexity of students’ attitudes toward and perceptions of diversity. One hundred and six students participated in community service as a requirement for classes in Small Group Communication. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis of pre and post-community service surveys revealed that (1) community service significantly increased students’ level of comfort in interacting with populations different from their own, and (2) community service facilitated a shift of students’ conceptualization of diversity from simple categorical divisions to both similarity and difference as dynamic principles of identity

Efficient Dual Head Nd:YAG 100mJ Oscillator for Remote Sensing

A diode pumped, Nd:YAG laser producing 100 mJ Q-switched pulses and employing a dual-pump head scheme in an unstable resonator configuration is described. Each head contains a side pumped zig-zag slab and four 6-bar QCW 808 nm diodes arrays which are de-rated 23%. Denoting 'z' as the lasing axis, the pump directions were along the x-axis in one head and the y-axis in the other, producing a circularized thermal lens, more typical in laser rod-based cavities. The dual head design's effective thermal lens is now corrected with a proper HR mirror curvature selection. This laser has demonstrated over 100 mJ output with high optical efficiency (24%), good TEM(sub 00) beam quality, and high pointing stability

The in vitro loss of penicillamine in plasma, albumin solutions, and whole blood: Implications for pharmacokinetic studies of penicillamine

The recent development of a high performance liquid chromatography assay method for the analysis of penicillamine in biological samples such as plasma, whole blood, and urine has provided a specific and sensitive assay method to aid in the study of penicillamine pharmacokinetics. Several investigators have reported measuring the plasma concentration of penicillamine. Some of these investigators have indicated that the plasma must be assayed immediately. However, such restrictions can limit the feasibility of a pharmacokinetic study. The results of this paper demonstrate the instability of penicillamine in plasma, albumin solutions, and whole blood. The rate of loss of penicillamine was shown to be influenced by the concentration of albumin. As a result of the significant loss of penicillamine over a short period of time, plasma or whole blood samples must be deproteinated immediately upon collection to avoid the loss of reduced penicillamine. Methods are presented for the preparation of biological samples so that the oxidation of penicillamine is prevented and the samples can be held for several days prior to analysis.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/23196/1/0000123.pd

A YAC contig in Xp21 containing the adrenal hypoplasia congenita and glycerol kinase deficiency genes

The gene loci for adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC) and glycerol kinase deficiency (GK) map in Xp21 distal to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and proximal to DXS28 (C7), by analysis of patient deletions. We have constructed a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) contig encompassing a 1.2 Mb region extending distally from DMD, and containing DXS708 (JC-1), the distal junction clone of a patient with GK and DMD. A pulsed-field gel electrophoresis map of the YAC contig identified 3 potential CpG islands. Whole YAC hybridization identified cosmids both for construction of cosmid contigs, and isolation of single copy probes. Thirteen new single copy probes and DXS28 and DXS708 were hybridized on a panel of patients; the deletion mapping indicates that the YAC contig contains both GK and at least part of AHC, and together with the physical map defines a GK critical region of 50-250 kb. In one AHC patient with a cytogenetically detectable deletion we used the new probes to characterize a complex double deletion. Non-overlapping deletions observed in other unrelated AHC patients indicate that the AHC gene is large, extending over at least 200-500 kb. This mapping provides the basis for the identification of the AHC and GK gene

Inextendible Schwarzschild black hole with a single exterior: How thermal is the Hawking radiation?

Several approaches to Hawking radiation on Schwarzschild spacetime rely in some way or another on the fact that the Kruskal manifold has two causally disconnected exterior regions. We investigate the Hawking(-Unruh) effect for a real scalar field on the \RPthree geon: an inextendible, globally hyperbolic, space and time orientable eternal black hole spacetime that is locally isometric to Kruskal but contains only one exterior region. The Hartle-Hawking-like vacuum~\hhvacgeon, which can be characterized alternatively by the positive frequency properties along the horizons or by the complex analytic properties of the Feynman propagator, turns out to contain exterior region Boulware modes in correlated pairs, and any operator in the exterior that only couples to one member of each correlated Boulware pair has thermal expectation values in the usual Hawking temperature. Generic operators in the exterior do not have this special form; however, we use a Bogoliubov transformation, a particle detector analysis, and a particle emission-absorption analysis that invokes the analytic properties of the Feynman propagator, to argue that \hhvacgeon appears as a thermal bath with the standard Hawking temperature to any exterior observer at asymptotically early and late Schwarzschild times. A~(naive) saddle-point estimate for the path-integral-approach partition function yields for the geon only half of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole with the same ADM mass: possible implications of this result for the validity of path-integral methods or for the statistical interpretation of black-hole entropy are discussed. Analogous results hold for a Rindler observer in a flat spacetime whose global properties mimic those of the geon.Comment: 53 pages, REVTex v3.1 with amsfonts and epsf, includes 5 eps figures. Doctors' personal health care choices: A cross-sectional survey in a mixed public/private setting

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Among Western countries, it has been found that physicians tend to manage their own illnesses and tend not have their own independent family physicians. This is recognized as a significant issue for both physicians and, by extension, the patients under their care, resulting in initiatives seeking to address this. Physicians' personal health care practices in Asia have yet to be documented.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>An anonymous cross-sectional postal questionnaire survey was conducted in Hong Kong, China. All 9570 medical practitioners in Hong Kong registered with the Hong Kong Medical Council in 2003 were surveyed. Chi-square tests and logistic regression models were applied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were 4198 respondents to the survey; a response rate of 44%. Two-thirds of respondents took care of themselves when they were last ill, with 62% of these self-medicating with prescription medication. Physicians who were graduates of Hong Kong medical schools, those working in general practice and non-members of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians were more likely to do so. Physician specialty was found to be the most influential reason in the choice of caregiver by those who had ever consulted another medical practitioner. Only 14% chose consultation with a FM/GP with younger physians and non-Hong Kong medical graduates having a higher likelihood of doing so. Seventy percent of all respondents believed that having their own personal physician was unnecessary.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Similar to the practice of colleagues in other countries, a large proportion of Hong Kong physicians self-manage their illnesses, take self-obtained prescription drugs and believe they do not need a personal physician. Future strategies to benefit the medical care of Hong Kong physicians will have to take these practices and beliefs into consideration.</p

Highly contiguous assemblies of 101 drosophilid genomes

Over 100 years of studies in Drosophila melanogaster and related species in the genus Drosophila have facilitated key discoveries in genetics, genomics, and evolution. While high-quality genome assemblies exist for several species in this group, they only encompass a small fraction of the genus. Recent advances in long-read sequencing allow high-quality genome assemblies for tens or even hundreds of species to be efficiently generated. Here, we utilize Oxford Nanopore sequencing to build an open community resource of genome assemblies for 101 lines of 93 drosophilid species encompassing 14 species groups and 35 sub-groups. The genomes are highly contiguous and complete, with an average contig N50 of 10.5 Mb and greater than 97% BUSCO completeness in 97/101 assemblies. We show that Nanopore-based assemblies are highly accurate in coding regions, particularly with respect to coding insertions and deletions. These assemblies, along with a detailed laboratory protocol and assembly pipelines, are released as a public resource and will serve as a starting point for addressing broad questions of genetics, ecology, and evolution at the scale of hundreds of species

Antinuclear Antibodies, Rheumatoid Factor and c-Reactive Protein in Serum of Normal Women Using Oral Contraceptives

Some women who report to a hospital or arthritis clinic note exacerbation of rheumatic complaints and develop serologic abnormalities while taking oral contraceptives. The current study concerns the detection of antinuclear antibodies, rheumatoid factor and C-reactive protein in normal women using these drugs. Prospective study of 82 women before and during oral contraceptive use permitted the detection of 4 who developed antinuclear antibodies, 9 who developed rheumatoid factor and 30 who developed C-reactive protein after less than 1 year of drug use. The prevalence of positive tests was greater in a group of 210 women who were using OC than that found in a group of 174 who had never used these drugs.
