Background. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is becoming increasingly common and it is associated with a number of metabolic and cardiovascular alterations. To date, only a few, small randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the effects of aerobic exercise training on maternal glyco-metabolic control and perinatal outcomes in women with GDM. Therefore, it remains still unclear whether these vascular and metabolic alterations may be reversed by regular exercise. In this study we aimed at investigating the effects of low-intensity aerobic exercise on the glycometabolic and cardiovascular outcomes in women with GDM. Subjects and Methods. 20 women with GDM were recruited in the GDM-FIT Study, a RCT (Clinicaltrials.gov ID: NCT03067662) to be randomly assigned between 18th-28th gestational week to structured aerobic exercise intervention (n=10) or standard care (n=10). Women in the control group received diet and physical exercise recommendations. Women in the intervention group received standard diet counseling and performed 40 minutes low intensity aerobic exercise three times per week at 30% heart rate reserve. Both groups underwent structured medical interview and psychological assessment in two separate occasions, at study entry and between 35th-37th gestational week, together with clinical and anthropometric measures. Weekly energy and carotid-to-femoral (CF) and radial (CR) pulse wave velocity (PWV) were also measured. Blood samples were stored for the determination of circulating pro-inflammatory metabolites and miRNA. In addition, a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system was applied to measure capillary blood glucose levels at 5-min timed intervals over 5 days at 32th-34th gestational week. Glucose variability measures and time spent in hypo- or hyperglycemia were also calculated. Results. Age, body-mass index (BMI) and HbA1c were similar between the two groups at study entry (standard care vs. exercise group, mean±SE): age (years) 34.5±1.4 vs. 34.3±0.9, BMI (kg/m2) 29.8±1.9 vs. 30±0.8, HbA1c (mmol/mol) 35±1.42 vs. 33.8±0.8, as well as in terms of CR-PWV (m/sec; 7.49±0.66 vs. 9.5±1.1) and CF-PWV (m/sec; 5.57±0.83 vs. 5.56±0.96). The metabolic parameters were similar between groups at 35th-37th gestational week. However, 4 women in the intervention group vs. 8 in the control group required insulin to reach the glycemic targets for pregnancy. Compared to the control group, women assigned to the exercise intervention showed a significant increase in weekly energy expenditure and a reduction in delta CR-PWV (1.4±0.74 vs. -2.2±1.4 m/sec). As compared to the corresponding non-exercise day, the CGM readings in the exercise group showed a significant decline of glucose levels during physical activity sessions, particularly after 30 minutes of exercise (P<0.05) up to 180 min after completion of exercise (P<0.005). With regard to the nocturnal and 24-h mean blood glucose levels, as well as time spent in hypo-/hyperglycemia and 24-h glucose variability, no significant differences were observed between the exercise vs. non-exercise days. Notably, as compared to the standard care arm, significantly lower 24-h mean blood glucose levels were observed during exercise days in the intervention group (P<0.05). Conclusions. These preliminary data indicate that a structured program of low-intensity aerobic exercise may have favorable effects on blood glucose and arterial stiffness in women with gestational diabetes

The paper deals with the subject of the entitlement of the right to strike. Starting from an historical overview of the different thesis on the theme of the (individual or collective) entitlement of the right to strike, the paper tries to assess the compatibility of the traditional “individualistic notion” of the right to strike with the aims pursued by collective disputes in a changing context of industrial relations

Contractual Limits to the Right to Strike in the Era of Crisis. The Italian Case with some Comparative Reliefs (France and the U.K.)*. WP CSDLE “Massimo D’Antona”.INT – 125/2015

The economic crisis, the outsourcing of production, and globalization have produced significant changes in industrial relations and trade unions. Because of these changes, dissent – which is usually manifested through the exercise of the right to strike and the spontaneous actions – faces certain limitations set by trade union clauses, which have been recently introduced to govern industrial relations (e.g. industrial peace clauses and enforceability ones). In order to deal with the foregoing questions, the present paper provides an analysis of the notion of strike through supranational sources (Introduction, Silvia Donà, Università di Roma La Sapienza), followed by an examination of what is meant by “holding the right to strike” in Italy. The paper goes on to investigate the way this right is exercised (Section 1, Lilli Carollo, Università di Roma La Sapienza) and the clauses which have been devised to narrow down its exercise through the years (Section 2, Anna Rota, Università di Bologna), and concludes with an overview of the consequences arising from the violations of these clauses (Section 3, Marianna Russo, Università di Roma La Sapienza). With a view of better understanding the peculiarities of the Italian rules concerning the right to strike, a comparison will be provided with France and the UK (Marta Filippi, Università di Roma La Sapienza)

Practicum is very closely related to learning Physics because it requires verification, proof through practicum and physics learning is full of theories, concepts, laws, principles and rules about physics, all of which need to be proven through practicum. The problem found in the practicum course in General Physics is that there is no standard practicum guideline available. The aim of the research is to develop a general physics practicum guide standard in the form of a General Physics Practicum Guide Smart Module based on the Case Method and Team-Based Project. The type of research is R&D with the 4-D development model proposed by Thiagarajan and Semmel. Data collection techniques are in the form of material validation questionnaires, media validation questionnaires, question validation questionnaires, and student response questionnaires. Based on the validation results of the General Physics Practicum Guide based on the Case Method and Team-Based Project, it is valid in the good category and can be continued for field trials and is expected to improve problem solving skills, critical thinking and creative thinking of students. Keywords: practicum guide; general physics; case method and team-based project

First steps to define murine amniotic fluid stem cell microenvironment

Stem cell niche refers to the microenvironment where stem cells reside in living organisms. Several elements define the niche and regulate stem cell characteristics, such as stromal support cells, gap junctions, soluble factors, extracellular matrix proteins, blood vessels and neural inputs. In the last years, different studies demonstrated the presence of cKit+ cells in human and murine amniotic fluid, which have been defined as amniotic fluid stem (AFS) cells. Firstly, we characterized the murine cKit+ cells present both in the amniotic fluid and in the amnion. Secondly, to analyze the AFS cell microenvironment, we injected murine YFP+ embryonic stem cells (ESC) into the amniotic fluid of E13.5 wild type embryos. Four days after transplantation we found that YFP+ sorted cells maintained the expression of pluripotency markers and that ESC adherent to the amnion were more similar to original ESC in respect to those isolated from the amniotic fluid. Moreover, cytokines evaluation and oxygen concentration analysis revealed in this microenvironment the presence of factors that are considered key regulators in stem cell niches. This is the first indication that AFS cells reside in a microenvironment that possess specific characteristics able to maintain stemness of resident and exogenous stem cells

BARFIE (Books and Reading for Intercultural Education) is a European thematic network in intercultural education aimed at teachers, librarians, parents, children and school authorities that uses books and other media for children aged 6 to 16. BARFIE was developed in 2002, 2003 and 2004 with funding from the European Union as a Comenius network, involving at its core 14 European countries, with its teaching institutions, schools, libraries, and school authorities, while reaching out to involve schoolchildren, teachers, researchers, publishers and the public in general not only in those countries but all over Europe. BARFIE has developed a collection and catalogue of books for children and young people on intercultural education, which can be consulted at www.barfie.net and in book form. In the collection there are around 10 books from each of 14 European states that are members or partners of the BARFIE network. The books were carefully selected by experts on children’s books and young adult books, librarians, teachers and educators with the aim of developing ideas and concepts for teaching multiculturality, being European, fighting xenophobia and racism, integrating difference and celebrating similarities. Simultaneously, BARFIE developed an online catalogue of projects on intercultural education and children’s fiction, which pools together resources of European projects developed under the European Union framework, such as The Reader’s Corner. European Style Fairy Tales, at www.autopen.com/euro.fairy.shtml; Children’s Polar Library, at www.barnenspolarbibliotek.com/; Communicating tradition and culture across the internet: Traditional Tales at www.eurotales.eril.net; Europe of Tales, at www.europeoftales.net; Netlibris, at www.netlibris.net; and The European Picture Book Collection, at www.ncrcl.ac.uk/epbc/ . BARFIE further developed pedagogical materials to be used in connection with the books in the collection in the form of seminars for teachers on: Global Citizenship; Getting to Know Central European Countries through Their Books; the European Picture Book Collection; Netlibris International; or Art Basics for Children; A Handful of Stories. In order to reach schoolchildren and teachers BARFIE developed teaching packages at European and local levels on: Learning English as a Foreign Language through BARFIE books; Introducing Portuguese and the Portuguese Culture through BARFIE Books; the BARFIE Picture Book Collection, as well as introductory sessions on particular books of the collection for school use. Finally, BARFIE brought together teachers, librarians, and researchers on its three seminars: the first took place in Vienna and was hosted by the Austrian Ministry of Education and the Kinderliteraturhaus in Vienna; the second venue was Bratislava and the BARFIE seminar joined efforts with the Biennial of Illustration in Children’s Literature and IBBY in Slovakia; the third seminar was held in Warsaw and was sponsored by the IBBY section of Poland and the Polish National Library and the Austrian Kinderliteraturhaus. This collection of articles tells you more about BARFIE, its efforts, aims and achievements. It describes work done under BARFIE inspiration and the enthusiasm of teachers who were keen to take the BARFIE books into their schools and thus broaden national curricula into European spaces of communication, exchange and intercultural learning. It offers you pedagogical materials to work from, ideas to take back into libraries and schools, as well as resources to integrate with your teaching and living. The collection of articles also presents scientific and pedagogical frameworks to think about children’s books, reading and interactive learning in contemporary Europe. In the three sections of the collection – Using the Resources of the BARFIE Network (section 1), From Books into Other Media: Reading, Using & Performing, (Section 2), and Children’s Books and Children’s Literature – Research and Position Papers (section 3) there is material for you to use in the classroom, in the library or at home, as well as material to reflect on and to improve your professional practice. This collection does not, however, describe all BARFIE activities. You can find more about these on the BARFIE webpage, at www.barfie.net, through the BARFIE newsletters, as well as through the contact persons in each European country that are on the partner section of the BARFIE webpage. Feel free to use the BARFIE resources and to join our network!Este documento foi elaborado no ãmbito do programa Comenius 3 Network (Comenius contract 90769-CP-1-2001-1-AT-COMENIUS-C3
