Influence of Print Orientation on Surface Roughness in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Processes

In the present paper, we address the influence of print orientation angle on surface roughnessobtained in lateral walls in fused deposition modelling (FDM) processes. A geometrical model isdefined that considers the shape of the filaments after deposition, in order to define a theoreticalroughness profile, for a certain print orientation angle. Different angles were considered between 5¿and 85¿. Simulated arithmetical mean height of the roughness profile, Ra values, were calculated fromthe simulated profiles. The Ra simulated results were compared to the experimental results, whichwere carried out with cylindrical PLA (polylactic acid) samples. The simulated Ra values were similarto the experimental values, except for high angles above 80¿, where experimental roughness decreasedwhile simulated roughness was still high. Low print orientation angles show regular profiles withrounded peaks and sharp values. At a print orientation angle of 85¿, the shape of the profile changeswith respect to lower angles, showing a gap between adjacent peaks. At 90¿, both simulated andexperimental roughness values would be close to zero, because the measurement direction is parallelto the layer orientation. Other roughness parameters were also measured: maximum height ofprofile, Rz, kurtosis, Rku, skewness, Rsk, and mean width of the profile elements, Rsm. At high printorientation angles, Rz decreases, Rku shifts to positive, Rsk slightly increases, and Rsk decreases, showing the change in the shape of the roughness profiles.Postprint (published version

Wine amphorae in eastern Hispania Citerior in late republican times (Ith century BC): amphorae epigraphy and organization of production

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to evaluate the reasons that led to the production of amphorae in the current Catalan coast in the first century BC (especially in the second half). We explore the relationship of the cesarean colonization and the Second Triumvirate with the production and diffusion of the amphorae of form Tarraconense 1. We analyze also the role that in its development could play the persons mentioned in the amphora stamps, of Italian origin, who may have been foreign investors or immigrants from the cesarean colonization.España. "Si él lo necesita": Gypsy fairness in Vallecas

    Get PDF
"Si él lo necesita" (if he really needs it) was the most common argument given by the subjects who accepted the zero offer in the ultimatum game during experiments were conducted among illiterate (adult) gypsies in Vallecas, Madrid. Interestingly the acceptance of the zero offer was not a rare case but, in contrast, it was the modal value. This is even more remarkable if we consider that the 97% of the subjects proposed the equal split.Gypsies, fairness, social welfare, strategy method ultimatum game, bargaining.

Influence of infill and nozzle diameter on porosity of FDM printed parts with rectilinear grid pattern

    Get PDF
The aim of the paper is to analyze the effect of nozzle diameter and infill on porosity and pore size of FDM printed specimens with rectilinear grid pattern. Two different nozzle diameters (0.2 and 0.4 mm), as well as four different infill values (20 %, 40 %, 60 % and 80 %) were used. Experimental results for pore size agree with theoretical results. On the contrary, low experimental porosity was obtained, especially for high infill values, because printed samples show fewer pores than expected. The higher infill, the lower porosity and pore size. Higher nozzle diameter implies higher pore size but similar porosity.Postprint (published version

Hybrid model predictive control for freeway traffic using discrete speed limit signals

HYCON2 Show day - Traffic modeling, Estimation and Control 13/05/2014 GrenobleIn this paper, two hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC) approaches for freeway traffic control are proposed considering variable speed limits (VSL) as discrete variables as in current real world implementations. These discrete characteristics of the speed limits values and some necessary constraints for the actual operation of VSL are usually underestimated in the literature, so we propose a way to include them using a macroscopic traffic model within an MPC framework. For obtaining discrete signals, the MPC controller has to solve a highly non-linear optimization problem, including mixed-integer variables. Since solving such a problem is complex and difficult to execute in real-time, we propose some methods to obtain reasonable control actions in a limited computation time. The first two methods (-exhaustive and -genetic discretization) consist of first relaxing the discrete constraints for the VSL inputs; and then, based on this continuous solution and using a genetic or an exhaustive algorithm, to find discrete solutions within a distance of the continuous solution that provide a good performance. The second class of methods split the problem in a continuous optimization for the ramp metering signals and in a discrete optimization for speed limits. The speed limits optimization, which is much more time-consuming than the ramp metering one, is solved by a genetic or an exhaustive algorithm in communication with a non-linear solver for the ramp metering. The proposed methods are tested by simulation, showing not only a good performance, but also keeping the computation time reduced.Unión Europea FP7/2007–201

Zero-energy pinning from interactions in Majorana nanowires

Majorana zero modes at the boundaries of topological superconductors are charge-neutral, an equal superposition of electrons and holes. This ideal situation is, however, hard to achieve in physical implementations, such as proximitized semiconducting nanowires of realistic length. In such systems Majorana overlaps are unavoidable and lead to their hybridization into charged Bogoliubov quasiparticles of finite energy, which, unlike true zero modes, are affected by electronic interactions. We here demonstrate that these interactions, particularly with bound charges in the dielectric surroundings, drastically change the non-interacting paradigm. Remarkably, interactions may completely suppress Majorana hybridization around parity crossings, where the total charge in the nanowire changes. This effect, dubbed zero-energy pinning, stabilizes Majoranas back to zero energy and charge, and leads to electronically incompressible parameter regions wherein Majoranas remain insensitive to local perturbations, despite their overlapWe thank K.
