    The Challenges of Community Engagement

    Lyons and Whelan provide a useful list of recommendations as to how community engagement on nanotechnology could be improved, which very few people working in community engagement could disagree with. However, as the conclusions of any study are dependent on the data obtained, if more data had been obtained and analysed then different conclusions might have been reached. Addressing the key issues in the paper and providing more data, also allows an opportunity to expand on current issues relating to community engagement on nanotechnology and the challenges it provides for practitioners

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) seberapa besar pengaruh dan signifikansi harga terhadap kepuasan pengunjung Taman Wisata Alam Grojogan Sewu Tawangmangu Kabupaten Karanganyar; (2) seberapa besar pengaruh dan signifikansi kualitas pelayanan terhadap kepuasan pengunjung Taman Wisata Alam Grojogan Sewu Tawangmangu Kabupaten Karanganyar; (3) seberapa besar pengaruh dan signifikansi harga dan kualitas pelayanan secara bersama-sama terhadap kepuasan pengunjung Taman Wisata Alam Grojogan Sewu Tawangmangu Kabupaten Karanganyar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian expost facto. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh pengunjung Taman Wisata Alam Grojogan Sewu Tawangmangu Kabupaten Karanganyar dan sampel sebanyak 100 pengunjung. Teknik sampling yang digunakan adalah accidental sampling Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan analisis regresi sederhana dan berganda setelah uji prasyarat dilakukan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) harga memiliki pengaruh sebesar 51,2% dan signifikan terhadap kepuasan pengunjung Taman Wisata Alam Grojogan Sewu Tawangmangu Kabupaten Karanganyar; (2) kualitas pelayanan memiliki pengaruh sebesar 45,2% dan signifikan terhadap kepuasan pengunjung Taman Wisata Alam Grojogan Sewu Tawangmangu Kabupaten Karanganyar; dan (3) harga dan kualitas pelayanan secara bersama-sama memiliki pengaruh sebesar 59,3% dan signifikan terhadap kepuasan pengunjung Taman Wisata Alam Grojogan Sewu Tawangmangu Kabupaten Karanganyar.     CMMSE2017: On two classes of fourth- and seventh-order vectorial methods with stable behavior

    [EN] A family of fourth-order iterative methods without memory, for solving nonlinear systems, and its seventh-order extension, are analyzed. By using complex dynamics tools, their stability and reliability are studied by means of the properties of the rational function obtained when they are applied on quadratic polynomials. The stability of their fixed points, in terms of the value of the parameter, its critical points and their associated parameter planes, etc. give us important information about which members of the family have good properties of stability and whether in any of them appear chaos in the iterative process.     What happens in the Lab: Applying Midstream Modulation to Enhance Critical Reflection in the Laboratory

    In response to widespread policy prescriptions for responsible innovation, social scientists and engineering ethicists, among others, have sought to engage natural scientists and engineers at the ‘midstream’: building interdisciplinary collaborations to integrate social and ethical considerations with research and development processes. Two ‘laboratory engagement studies’ have explored how applying the framework of midstream modulation could enhance the reflections of natural scientists on the socio-ethical context of their work. The results of these interdisciplinary collaborations confirm the utility of midstream modulation in encouraging both first- and second-order reflective learning. The potential for second-order reflective learning, in which underlying value systems become the object of reflection, is particularly significant with respect to addressing social responsibility in research practices. Midstream modulation served to render the socio-ethical context of research visible in the laboratory and helped enable research participants to more critically reflect on this broader context. While lab-based collaborations would benefit from being carried out in concert with activities at institutional and policy levels, midstream modulation could prove a valuable asset in the toolbox of interdisciplinary methods aimed at responsible innovation

    Identification of Novel Pathogenicity Loci in Clostridium perfringens Strains That Cause Avian Necrotic Enteritis

    Type A Clostridium perfringens causes poultry necrotic enteritis (NE), an enteric disease of considerable economic importance, yet can also exist as a member of the normal intestinal microbiota. A recently discovered pore-forming toxin, NetB, is associated with pathogenesis in most, but not all, NE isolates. This finding suggested that NE-causing strains may possess other virulence gene(s) not present in commensal type A isolates. We used high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies to generate draft genome sequences of seven unrelated C. perfringens poultry NE isolates and one isolate from a healthy bird, and identified additional novel NE-associated genes by comparison with nine publicly available reference genomes. Thirty-one open reading frames (ORFs) were unique to all NE strains and formed the basis for three highly conserved NE-associated loci that we designated NELoc-1 (42 kb), NELoc-2 (11.2 kb) and NELoc-3 (5.6 kb). The largest locus, NELoc-1, consisted of netB and 36 additional genes, including those predicted to encode two leukocidins, an internalin-like protein and a ricin-domain protein. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and Southern blotting revealed that the NE strains each carried 2 to 5 large plasmids, and that NELoc-1 and -3 were localized on distinct plasmids of sizes ∼85 and ∼70 kb, respectively. Sequencing of the regions flanking these loci revealed similarity to previously characterized conjugative plasmids of C. perfringens. These results provide significant insight into the pathogenetic basis of poultry NE and are the first to demonstrate that netB resides in a large, plasmid-encoded locus. Our findings strongly suggest that poultry NE is caused by several novel virulence factors, whose genes are clustered on discrete pathogenicity loci, some of which are plasmid-borne

    Incorporating radiomics into clinical trials: expert consensus on considerations for data-driven compared to biologically-driven quantitative biomarkers

    Existing Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers (QIBs) are associated with known biological tissue characteristics and follow a well-understood path of technical, biological and clinical validation before incorporation into clinical trials. In radiomics, novel data-driven processes extract numerous visually imperceptible statistical features from the imaging data with no a priori assumptions on their correlation with biological processes. The selection of relevant features (radiomic signature) and incorporation into clinical trials therefore requires additional considerations to ensure meaningful imaging endpoints. Also, the number of radiomic features tested means that power calculations would result in sample sizes impossible to achieve within clinical trials. This article examines how the process of standardising and validating data-driven imaging biomarkers differs from those based on biological associations. Radiomic signatures are best developed initially on datasets that represent diversity of acquisition protocols as well as diversity of disease and of normal findings, rather than within clinical trials with standardised and optimised protocols as this would risk the selection of radiomic features being linked to the imaging process rather than the pathology. Normalisation through discretisation and feature harmonisation are essential pre-processing steps. Biological correlation may be performed after the technical and clinical validity of a radiomic signature is established, but is not mandatory. Feature selection may be part of discovery within a radiomics-specific trial or represent exploratory endpoints within an established trial; a previously validated radiomic signature may even be used as a primary/secondary endpoint, particularly if associations are demonstrated with specific biological processes and pathways being targeted within clinical trials

    Upgrading of existing pedestrian suspension bridges for light vehicular traffic

    For the rapid economic development of rural villages in Sri Lanka, the transportation facilities should be upgraded to motorable level. In this context, one of the bottlenecks is the need of large number of bridges, which is a costly item. Therefore, the solution adopted by the relevant authorities to this problem is the construction of pedestrian suspension bridges at these locations. Suspension bridges that can allow light vehicular traffic could be much more beneficial than pedestrian suspension bridges, since those will allow more economic benefits by facilitating the transport of goods. However such bridges are still not available in Sri Lanka. Therefore, it is useful to develop suspension bridges for light vehicular traffic that could be constructed with locally available expertise in modular fashion. When suspension bridges are designed for light vehicular traffic, it is necessary to ensure that an accurate analysis and design techniques are used. In this study, it is shown that two dimensional and three dimensional computer modelling could be utilized to accurately determine various possible load conditions. The results of such analysis would facilitate the structural design engineer to perform the design with a lot of confidence. This is a much better situation than performing the design on the basis of approximate analysis. In order to show the possibility of using the above techniques, three case studies were conducted for 42 m, 60 m and 78 m long bridges. The structural concepts were developed with the aim of allowing unobstructed traffic foe single lane of light vehicles.
