Ochratoxin A in nephropathic patients from two cities of central zone in Portugal
Ochratoxin A (OTA) produced by Aspergillus and Penicilliumgenera contaminates several foods. OTA is nephrotoxic to all animal species studied so far, and most likely to humans, who show the longest half-life for elimination of this toxin among all examined species. OTA has other toxic effects such as teratogenicity, immunotoxiity, genotoxicity, and is also mutagenic and carcinogenic, all of which lead to life-threatening pathologies through several molecular pathways.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TGX-4MS9JXF-2/1/6c0f4b2a3b77c84ec1f89cdefb65913
Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection of Early Gastric Cancer Using the Insulated Tip Knife
AbstractEndoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an endoscopic technique in which a gastrointestinal mucosal neoplasm can be excised by cutting through the submucosa with an endoscopic knife. It can be used with diagnostic or therapeutic intent and allows en bloc removal of the specimen. ESD usually begins with identification and evaluation of the lesion and assessment of the margin with chromo-endoscopy. The subsequent steps include marking, submucosal injection, and circumferential and submucosal dissection. Complications should be promptly recognized and dealt with immediately if necessary. This video demonstrates the main steps of the technique and management of complications. Optimal strategies in collective Parrondo games
We present a modification of the so-called Parrondo's paradox where one is
allowed to choose in each turn the game that a large number of individuals
play. It turns out that, by choosing the game which gives the highest average
earnings at each step, one ends up with systematic loses, whereas a periodic or
random sequence of choices yields a steadily increase of the capital. An
explanation of this behavior is given by noting that the short-range
maximization of the returns is "killing the goose that laid the golden eggs". A
continuous model displaying similar features is analyzed using dynamic
programming techniques from control theory.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, revised version in published for

Medium materials for improving frost detection on a resistive sensor
Reducing food waste demands improvements in refrigeration systems. Furthermore, the rise of temperatures worldwide demands more capable and efficient refrigeration equipment. One of the problems that affects refrigeration equipment is the accumulation of frost in the heat exchanger that reduces efficiency, and in extreme cases, blocks the air flow. Usually, defrosting is timed for the worst-case scenario, which results in many unnecessary defrosting operations that compromise the efficiency, and temperature stability in the refrigerated environment. This paper presents a low-cost resistive sensor’s reliability case studies,
using several materials and configurations. This study is within the activities of project “Pack2Life – High performance packaging”, project IDT in

Experimental solubility and density studies on aqueous solutions ofquaternary ammonium halides, and thermodynamic modelling formelting enthalpy estimations
Aiming to extend the yet limited knowledge on phase equilibria and physical-chemical properties of quaternaryalkylammonium halides and their aqueous binary systems, the solubilities of ten salts in water were measured inthis work in the temperature range between 293.2 K and 348.2 K along with their densities. The PC-SAFT equa-tion of state was thenapplied in the description of density as well as water activity coefficients data. The model-ling results describe very satisfactorily the experimental data, and the non-associating parameters follow well-defined trends with the molecular weight of the alkylammonium halides. These parameters were applied inthe prediction of the solubility data with unsatisfactory results, with mole fraction average absolute deviation(AAD= 0.018), deteriorating with increasing alkyl chain length. However, refitting thebinaryinteraction param-eter a much better description is obtained (AAD = 0.0045). COSMO-RS was also applied for the solubility predic-tion (AAD = 0.025), with poorer results for the chloride salts. After, the melting enthalpies of the quaternaryalkylammonium halides were estimated using the PC-SAFT equation, which in spite of their uncertainty, are pos-sibly the best option to perform solid-liquid equilibrium analysis of utmost importance when designing andscreening new deep eutectic mixtures based on these compounds.publishe

Wireless Sensor Networks for Building Robotic Paths - A Survey of Problems and Restrictions
The conjugation of small nodes with sensing, communication and processing capabilities allows for the
creation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). These networks can be deployed to measure a very wide
range of environmental phenomena and send data from remote locations back to users. They offer new and
exciting possibilities for applications and research. This paper presents the background of WSNs by firstly
exploring the different fields applications, with examples for each of these fields, then the challenges faced
by these networks in areas such as energy-efficiency, node localization, node deployment, limited storage
and routing. It aims at explaining each issue and giving solutions that have been proposed in the research
literature. Finally, the paper proposes a practical scenario of deploying a WSN by autonomous robot path
construction. The requirements for such a scenario and the open issues that can be tackled by it are
exposed, namely the issues of associated with measuring RSSI, the degree of autonomy of the robot and
connectivity restoration. The authors would like to acknowledge the

Sustainability improvement of a composite materials' industry through recycling re-engineering process approaches
This case study was aimed at measuring and assessing the potential improvements that couldbe made on the eco-efficiency performance of a composite materials' industry, specifically aglass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) pultrusion manufacturing company. For this purpose, allthe issues involved in the pultrusion process of GFRP profiles were analysed, the current ecoefficiency performance of the company was determined, all the procedures applied in theproduction process were revised, and improvement strategies were planned and investigatedwith basis on the performed analysis. The new eco-efficiency ratios were estimated takinginto account the implementation of new proceedings and procedures through re-engineeringthe manufacturing process and recycling approaches. These features lead to significantimprovements on the sequent assessed eco-efficiency ratios, yielding to a more sustainableproduct and manufacturing process of pultruded GFRP profiles
