    Resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy of BNB

    Journal ArticleTriatomic BNB has been produced by laser ablation of a boron nitride rod in a supersonic expansion of helium carrier gas and has been investigated using resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy in the visible region. The B? 2IIg?X? 2?u + band system has been recorded near 514 nm and is dominated by a strong origin band, which has been rotationally resolved and analyzed. Both the 11B14N11B (64% natural abundance) and the 10B14N11B (32% natural abundance) isotopic modifications have been analyzed, leading to the spectroscopic constants (and their 1 error limits) of B"0(X? 2?u+)=0.466 147(70), B'0(B? 2IIg)=0.467 255(75), and A'0(B? 2IIg)=6.1563(38) cm?1 for 10B14N11B, corresponding to r"B ?N(?X 2?u+)=1.312 47(10) ? and r"B ?N(?B 2IIg)=1.310 92(11) ?. Very similar values are obtained for the more abundant isotopomer, 11B14N11B: B'0(X? 2?u+) =0.444 493(69), B'0(B? 2IIg)=0.445 6069(70), A'0(B? 2IIg)=6.1455(38) cm?1, corresponding to r"B ?N(?X 2?u+)=1.312 41(10) ? and r'b ?N(?B 2IIg)=1.310 77(10) ?. These results are discussed as they relate to Walsh?s rules and are compared to results for related molecules

    A Static Voltage Security Region for Centralized Wind Power Integration-Part I: Concept and Method

    When large wind farms are centrally integrated in a power grid, cascading tripping faults induced by voltage issues are becoming a great challenge. This paper therefore proposes a concept of static voltage security region to guarantee that the voltage will remain within operation limits under both base conditions and N-1 contingencies. For large wind farms, significant computational effort is required to calculate the exact boundary of the proposed security region. To reduce this computational burden and facilitate the overall analysis, the characteristics of the security region are first analyzed, and its boundary components are shown to be strictly convex. Approximate security regions are then proposed, which are formed by a set of linear cutting planes based on special operating points known as near points and inner points. The security region encompassed by cutting planes is a good approximation to the actual security region. The proposed procedures are demonstrated on a modified nine-bus system with two wind farms. The simulation confirmed that the cutting plane technique can provide a very good approximation to the actual security region

    In Part I of this work, a static voltage security region was introduced to guarantee the safety of wind farm reactive power outputs under both base conditions and N-1 contingency. In this paper, a mathematical representation of the approximate N-1 security region has further studied to provide better coordination among wind farms and help prevent cascading tripping following a single wind farm trip. Besides, the influence of active power on the security region is studied. The proposed methods are demonstrated for N-1 contingency cases in a nine-bus system. The simulations verify that the N-1 security region is a small subset of the security region under base conditions. They also illustrate the fact that if the system is simply operated below the reactive power limits, without coordination among the wind farms, the static voltage is likely to exceed its limit. A two-step optimal adjustment strategy is introduced to shift insecure operating points into the security region under N-1 contingency.     Prognosis and pain dissection of novel signatures in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma based on fatty acid metabolism-related genes

    Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a malignant tumor that is characterized by the accumulation of intracellular lipid droplets. The prognostic value of fatty acid metabolism-related genes (FMGs) in RCC remains unclear. Alongside this insight, we collected data from three RCC cohorts, namely, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), E-MTAB-1980, and GSE22541 cohorts, and identified a total of 309 FMGs that could be associated with RCC prognosis. First, we determined the copy number variation and expression levels of these FMGs, and identified 52 overall survival (OS)-related FMGs of the TCGA-KIRC and the E-MTAB-1980 cohort data. Next, 10 of these genesā€”FASN, ACOT9, MID1IP1, CYP2C9, ABCD1, CPT2, CRAT, TP53INP2, FAAH2, and PTPRGā€”were identified as pivotal OS-related FMGs based on least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and Cox regression analyses. The expression of some of these genes was confirmed in patients with RCC by immunohistochemical analyses. Kaplanā€“Meier analysis showed that the identified FMGs were effective in predicting the prognosis of RCC. Moreover, an optimal nomogram was constructed based on FMG-based risk scores and clinical factors, and its robustness was verified by time-dependent receiver operating characteristic analysis, calibration curve analysis, and decision curve analysis. We have also described the biological processes and the tumor immune microenvironment based on FMG-based risk score classification. Given the close association between fatty acid metabolism and cancer-related pain, our 10-FMG signature may also serve as a potential therapeutic target with dual effects on ccRCC prognosis and cancer pain and, therefore, warrants further investigation

    Water Quality in Irrigated Paddy Systems

    Irrigated paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food for roughly half of the worldā€™s population. Concerns over water quality have arisen in recent decades, particularly in China, which is the largest rice-producing country in the world and has the most intensive use of nutrients and water in rice production. On the one hand, the poor water quality has constrained the use of water for irrigation to paddy systems in many areas of the world. On the other hand, nutrient losses from paddy production systems contribute to contamination and eutrophication of freshwater bodies. Here, we review rice production, water requirement, water quality issues, and management options to minimize nutrient losses from paddy systems. We conclude that management of nutrient source, rate, timing, and placement should be combined with the management of irrigation and drainage water to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus losses from paddies. More research is needed to identify cost-effective monitoring approaches and mitigation options, and relevant extension and policy should be enforced to achieve water quality goals. The review is preliminarily based on Chinaā€™s scenario, but it would also provide valuable information for other rice-producing countries

    Cytoplasmic p21 is a potential predictor for cisplatin sensitivity in ovarian cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>P21<sup>(WAF1/Cip1) </sup>binds to cyclin-dependent kinase complexes and inhibits their activities. It was originally described as an inhibitor of cancer cell proliferation. However, many recent studies have shown that p21 promotes tumor progression when accumulated in the cell cytoplasm. So far, little is known about the correlation between cytoplasmic p21 and drug resistance. This study was aimed to investigate the role of p21 in the cisplatin resistance of ovarian cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>RT-PCR, western blot and immunofluorescence were used to detect p21 expression and location in cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cell line C13* and its parental line OV2008. Regulation of cytoplasmic p21 was performed through transfection of p21 siRNA, Akt2 shRNA and Akt2 constitutively active vector in the two cell lines; their effects on cisplatin-induced apoptosis were evaluated by flow cytometry. Tumor tissue sections of clinical samples were analyzed by immunohistochemistry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>p21 predominantly localizes to the cytoplasm in C13* compared to OV2008. Persistent exposure to low dose cisplatin in OV2008 leads to p21 translocation from nuclear to cytoplasm, while it had not impact on p21 localization in C13*. Knockdown of cytoplasmic p21 by p21 siRNA transfection in C13* notably increased cisplatin-induced apoptosis through activation of caspase 3. Inhibition of p21 translocation into the cytoplasm by transfection of Akt2 shRNA into C13* cells significantly increased cisplatin-induced apoptosis, while induction of p21 translocation into the cytoplasm by transfection of constitutively active Akt2 in OV2008 enhanced the resistance to cisplatin. Immunohistochemical analysis of clinical ovarian tumor tissues demonstrated that cytoplasmic p21 was negatively correlated with the response to cisplatin based treatment.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Cytoplasmic p21 is a novel biomarker of cisplatin resistance and it may represent a potential therapeutic target for ovarian tumors that are refractory to conventional treatment.</p

    HLungDB: an integrated database of human lung cancer research

    The human lung cancer database (HLungDB) is a database with the integration of the lung cancer-related genes, proteins and miRNAs together with the corresponding clinical information. The main purpose of this platform is to establish a network of lung cancer-related molecules and to facilitate the mechanistic study of lung carcinogenesis. The entries describing the relationships between molecules and human lung cancer in the current release were extracted manually from literatures. Currently, we have collected 2585 genes and 212 miRNA with the experimental evidences involved in the different stages of lung carcinogenesis through text mining. Furthermore, we have incorporated the results from analysis of transcription factor-binding motifs, the promoters and the SNP sites for each gene. Since epigenetic alterations also play an important role in lung carcinogenesis, genes with epigenetic regulation were also included. We hope HLungDB will enrich our knowledge about lung cancer biology and eventually lead to the development of novel therapeutic strategies.
