Non-equilibrium intermixing and phase transformation in severely deformed Al/Ni multilayers
Al/Ni multilayers have been prepared by repeated folding and cold rolling
(F&R) of elemental foils. The thickness of Al and Ni foils is reduced down to
less than 50 nm after fifty F&R cycles. Three-dimensional atom probe analyses
clearly reveal the presence of supersaturated solid solutions and give the
evidence of deformation-induced intermixing. The formation of the solid
solutions and their transformation into the Al3Ni phase upon annealing is

Analysis of Optical Pulse Propagation with ABCD Matrices
We review and extend the analogies between Gaussian pulse propagation and
Gaussian beam diffraction. In addition to the well-known parallels between
pulse dispersion in optical fiber and CW beam diffraction in free space, we
review temporal lenses as a way to describe nonlinearities in the propagation
equations, and then introduce further concepts that permit the description of
pulse evolution in more complicated systems. These include the temporal
equivalent of a spherical dielectric interface, which is used by way of example
to derive design parameters used in a recent dispersion-mapped soliton
transmission experiment. Our formalism offers a quick, concise and powerful
approach to analyzing a variety of linear and nonlinear pulse propagation

On the existence of internal modes of sine-Gordon kinks
We study whether or not sine-Gordon kinks exhibit internal modes or
``quasimodes.'' By considering the response of the kinks to ac forces and
initial distortions, we show that neither intrinsic internal modes nor
``quasimodes'' exist in contrast to previous reports. However, we do identify a
different kind of internal mode bifurcating from the bottom edge of the phonon
band which arises from the discretization of the system in the numerical

Expression of biomarkers modulating prostate cancer angiogenesis: Differential expression of annexin II in prostate carcinomas from India and USA
BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) incidences vary with genetic, geographical and ethnic dietary background of patients while angiogenesis is modulated through exquisite interplay of tumor-stromal interactions of biological macromolecules. We hypothesized that comprehensive analysis of four biomarkers modulating angiogenesis in PCa progression in two diverse populations might explain the variance in the incidence rates. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical analysis of 42 PCa biopsies reveals that though Anx-II expression is lost in both the Indian and American population with Gleason scores (GS) ranging between 6 and 10, up to 25 % of cells in the entire high grade (GS > 8) PD PCa samples from US show intense focal membrane staining for Anx-II unlike similarly graded specimens from India. Consistent with this observation, the prostate cancer cell lines PC-3, DU-145 and MDA PCa 2A, but not LNCaP-R, LNCAP-UR or MDA PCa 2B cell lines, express Anx-II. Transcriptional reactivation of Anx-II gene with Aza-dC could not entirely account for loss of Anx-II protein in primary PCa. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) was moderately expressed in most of high grade PIN and some MD PCa and surrounding stroma. COX-2 was not expressed in PD PCa (GS ~7–10), while adjacent smooth muscles cells stained weakly positive. Decorin expression was observed only in high grade PIN but not in any of the prostate cancers, atrophy or BPH while stromal areas of BPH stained intensively for DCN and decreased with advancing stages of PCa. Versican expression was weak in most of the MD PCa, moderate in all of BPH, moderately focal in PD PC, weak and focal in PIN, atrophy and adjacent stroma. CONCLUSIONS: Expression of pro- and anti-angiogenic modulators changes with stage of PCa but correlates with angiogenic status. Focal membrane staining of Anx-II reappears in high grade PCa specimens only from US indicating differential expression of Anx-II. COX-2 stained stronger in American specimens compared to Indian specimens. The sequential expression of DCN and VCN in progressive stages was similar in specimens from India and USA indicating no population-based differences. The mechanistic and regulatory role of Anx-II in PCa progression warrants further investigation
Preparation of anti-vicinal amino alcohols: asymmetric synthesis of D-erythro-Sphinganine, (+)-spisulosine and D-ribo-phytosphingosine
Two variations of the Overman rearrangement have been developed for the highly selective synthesis of anti-vicinal amino alcohol natural products. A MOM-ether directed palladium(II)-catalyzed rearrangement of an allylic trichloroacetimidate was used as the key step for the preparation of the protein kinase C inhibitor D-erythro-sphinganine and the antitumor agent (+)-spisulosine, while the Overman rearrangement of chiral allylic trichloroacetimidates generated by asymmetric reduction of an alpha,beta-unsaturated methyl ketone allowed rapid access to both D-ribo-phytosphingosine and L-arabino-phytosphingosine
A rare case of low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma of the femur in a 38-year-old woman: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Primary myofibroblastic sarcoma of the bone is a rare spindle cell tumour with, to the best of our knowledge, only eight cases reported in the available English language literature. The disease's rarity and its low-grade features make an accurate diagnosis difficult in most cases. The differential diagnoses of this unusual tumour include various benign entities as well as other sarcomas. Due to the difference in prognosis, a precise pathologic diagnosis is essential, which requires a combination of thorough morphologic examination, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy wherever available.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 38-year-old Indian woman with a lytic lesion in her left femur. The tumour was associated with cortical destruction and soft tissue extension. A biopsy from the soft tissue component showed features suggestive of a low-grade malignant mesenchymal tumour. Excision of the tumour was performed and histopathological examination showed a low-grade spindle cell sarcoma with collagenous stroma. Expressions of vimentin and smooth muscle actin were also noted. Ultrastructural examination confirmed its myofibroblastic nature. A final diagnosis of low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma of the left femur was thus rendered.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma is one of the rarer osseous spindle cell sarcomas depicting a favourable prognosis in the cases reported so far. Its diagnosis requires ancillary techniques like immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. To the best of our knowledge, we report the ninth case in the literature and the first case from our subcontinent.</p
Compactons versus Solitons
We investigate whether the recently proposed PT-symmetric extensions of
generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations admit genuine soliton solutions besides
compacton solitary waves. For models which admit stable compactons having a
width which is independent of their amplitude and those which possess unstable
compacton solutions the Painleve test fails, such that no soliton solutions can
be found. The Painleve test is passed for models allowing for compacton
solutions whose width is determined by their amplitude. Consequently these
models admit soliton solutions in addition to compactons and are integrable.Comment: 4 page
Applying refinement to the use of mice and rats in rheumatoid arthritis research
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a painful, chronic disorder and there is currently an unmet need for effective therapies that will benefit a wide range of patients. The research and development process for therapies and treatments currently involves in vivo studies, which have the potential to cause discomfort, pain or distress. This Working Group report focuses on identifying causes of suffering within commonly used mouse and rat ‘models’ of RA, describing practical refinements to help reduce suffering and improve welfare without compromising the scientific objectives. The report also discusses other, relevant topics including identifying and minimising sources of variation within in vivo RA studies, the potential to provide pain relief including analgesia, welfare assessment, humane endpoints, reporting standards and the potential to replace animals in RA research
Modulation instability induced by cross-phase modulation in a dual-wavelength dispersion-managed soliton fiber ring laser
We report on the observation of modulation instability induced by cross-phase
modulation in a dual-wavelength operation dispersion-managed soliton fiber ring
laser with net negative cavity dispersion. The passively mode-locked operation
is achieved by using nonlinear polarization rotation technique. A new type of
dual-wavelength operation, where one is femtosecond pulse and the other is
picosecond pulse operation, is obtained by properly rotating the polarization
controllers. When the dual-wavelength pulses are simultaneously circulating in
the laser ring cavity, a series of stable modulation sidebands appears in the
picosecond pulse spectrum at longer wavelength with lower peak power due to
modulation instability induced by cross-phase modulation between the two lasing
wavelengths. Moreover, the intensities and wavelength shifts of the modulation
sidebands can be tuned by varying the power of the femtosecond pulse or the
lasing central wavelengths of the dual-wavelength pulses. The theoretical
analysis of the modulation instability induced by cross-phase modulation in our
