Student motivations, perceptions and opinions of participating in student evaluation of teaching surveys: A scoping review
Several times each year the teaching performance of academics at higher education institutions are evaluated through anonymous, online student evaluation of teaching (SET) surveys. Universities use SETs to inform decisions about staff promotion and tenure, but low student participation levels make the surveys impractical for this use. This scoping review aims to explore student motivations, perceptions and opinions of SET survey completion. Five EBSCOÂź databases were searched using key words. Thematic analysis of a meta-synthesis of qualitative findings derived from 21 papers identified five themes: (i) the value studentsâ place on SET, (ii) the knowledge that SET responses are acted upon to improve teaching, (iii) assurance of survey confidentiality and anonymity, (iv) incentives for completing SET, and (v) survey design and timing of survey release. Perceptions, knowledge and attitudes about the value of SET are essential factors in motivating students to engage and complete SETs, particularly if surveys are easy to interpret, time for completion is incentivised and responses are valued
Student evaluation of teaching: Reactions of Australian academics to anonymous non-constructive student commentary.
Within Australian higher education, student evaluation of teaching (SET) is regularly conducted and data are utilised for quality control and staff appraisal. Within current methodologies, students can anonymously provide further feedback as written commentary. There is now growing evidence that, once this narrative becomes derogatory or abusive, it may have the potential to create harm. To investigate staff reactions to receiving anonymous non-constructive commentary, a one group point in time design was constructed, and a survey conducted. Participants (N = 741) from a broad cross-section of Australian universities responded to Likert questions asking about their reactions. A significant impact was revealed according to age for mental health, stress and professional confidence, with younger and tenured academics indicating the most vulnerability. There were no differences across gender. Non-health disciplines with teaching loads greater than 50% reported an impact of anonymous SET on mental health and professional confidence. Being casually or seasonally employed or from an ethnic background was shown to have a significant effect on professional confidence. Findings suggest that the potential for higher education academics to be harmed via this process is a continued risk and highlights the need for review and reform of SET systems and protocols
Air Quality in Oxfam Superadobe Community Building, Zaatari camp, Jordan
In collaboration with Oxfam-Jordan, the University of Bath conducted air quality monitoring in a community centre in Zaatari refugee camp over one week in May 2018. Two buildings were monitored, a superadobe (sand bag) structure and a caravan. In addition to measurements of air quality outdoors.The monitoring consisted of two parts, airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM) suspended in the air. VOCs levels in both monitored buildings were much lower than the allowed limits in the UK, may be due to the high ventilation rate. Therefore, VOCs are not thought of to be of concern. On the other hand, PM concentrations were significantly higher than guidelines for daily exposure by WHO

Mapping of modifiable barriers and facilitators of medication adherence in bipolar disorder to the Theoretical Domains Framework: a systematic review protocol
Introduction: People with bipolar disorder require long-term treatment but it is estimated that 40% of these people do not adhere to prescribed medication regimens. Non-adherence increases the risk of relapse, hospitalisation and suicide. Some evidence syntheses report barriers to mental health treatment adherence but rarely delineate between modifiable and non-modifiable barriers. They also fail to distinguish between the patientsâ perspective and that of other stakeholders such as clinicians despite of their different understanding and priorities about adherence. Facilitators of adherence, which are also important for informing adherence intervention design, are also lacking from syntheses and few syntheses focus on medications for bipolar disorder. This systematic review aims to identify modifiable barriers and facilitators (determinants) of medication adherence in bipolar disorder. We also plan to report determinants of medication adherence from perspectives of patients, carers, healthcare professionals and other third parties. A unique feature of this systematic review in the context of mental health is the use of the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to organise the literature identified determinants of medication adherence. Methods and analysis: The protocol adheres to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols and ENhancing Transparency in REporting the synthesis of Qualitative research (ENTREQ) guidelines. This review will include both qualitative and quantitative primary studies exploring determinants of medication adherence in bipolar disorder. We will search the following databases using a preplanned strategy: CINAHL, Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), Embase, LiLACS, Medline, PsychINFO, PubMed without date restrictions. We will report the quality of included studies. We will use framework synthesis using the TDF as an a priori âframeworkâ. We will map the literature identified modifiable determinants to the domains of TDF. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval is not required as primary data will not be collected. The results will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed publication. PROSPERO registration number:CRD42018096306
Analysing experiences and issues in self-built shelters in Bangladesh using transdisciplinary approach
There are currently 70.8 million forcibly displaced people, globally. Bangladesh hosts the largest refugee camp in the world. Much effort has gone into the research, design and delivery of mass-produced shelters. Yet most refugees live in self-built shelters using simple shelter materials. This paper aims to demonstrate the benefits of using a transdisciplinary approach for holistic data collection in such shelters. A total of 1594 households were surveyed in refugee camps in Bangladesh using diverse methodsâe.g. surveys, semi-structured interviews, physical measurements. It was only because of the use of various methods that the reasons behind identified issues were discovered or quantified. For example, household surveys uncovered the issue of poor ventilation, but only the semi-structured interviews exposed the reasons behind it, while physical measurements assessed the implications of thisâannual particulate exposure 13 times the recommended limit. Furthermore, several methods pointed to issues with materials, but only the focus groups discussions exposed the need for gender-sensitive technical training tailored for women on the correct use of the materials. This study demonstrates that a diverse team (humanitarian staff, building physicists, and anthropologists) using several approaches to data-gathering and working in a transdisciplinary manner has much to offer the sector, and by including quantitative physical measurements allows costed improvement plans to be developed, targets to be set and general, rather than case specific, knowledge to be generated. The findings of this study have resulted in new shelter interventions by the aid sector that were rolled out in over 70,000 shelters

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (update).BackgroundKey barriers to effectively supporting adherence include poor awareness amongst healthcare professionals (HCPs), scarce clinical tools and interventions, and suboptimal patient-provider communication. A Cochrane review assessed the impact of feedback interventions amongst physicians published until 2016. Other HCPs are increasingly involved in supporting adherence.ObjectivesTo assess the effects of providing healthcare providers with medication adherence feedback as a mechanism for improving patientsâ medication adherence. To assess the impact of the intervention upon clinical outcomes, patient-reported outcomes, economic/financial outcomes and processes of care.Search methodsWe will search RCTs and cluster RCTs on CENTRAL, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsychArticles and PsychInfo, and grey literature sources.Selection criteriaInclusion criteria are any reported intervention providing adherence feedback to HCPs as a key component, for long term medication for chronic diseases.Data collection and analysisOne author performs title and abstract screening. Four authors will review full texts, extract data, and assess risk of bias. We will assess intervention effects on medication adherence, clinical outcomes, patient-reported outcomes, economic/financial outcomes and processes of care. We will assess heterogeneity, sensitivity, and undertake meta-analysis where appropriate.Main resultsThe search yielded 4415 articles (pending grey literature). Publication is anticipated Q1 2023.Authorâs conclusionsMedication adherence feedback to HCPs could contribute significantly to reducing key barriers associated with poor adherence. Zonal Momentum Balance in the Tropical Atmospheric Circulation during the Global Monsoon Mature Months
In this paper, zonal momentum balances of the tropical atmospheric circulation during the global monsoon mature months (January and July) are analyzed in three dimensions based on the ECMWF Interim Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim). It is found that the dominant terms in the balance of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in both months are the pressure gradient force, the Coriolis force, and friction. The nonlinear advection term plays a significant role only in the Asian summer monsoon regions within the ABL. In the upper troposphere, the pressure gradient force, the Coriolis force, and the nonlinear advection are the dominant terms. The transient eddy force and the residual force (which can be explained as convective momentum transfer over open oceans) are secondary, yet cannot be neglected near the equator. Zonal-mean equatorial upper-troposphere easterlies are maintained by the absolute angular momentum advection associated with the cross-equatorial Hadley circulation. Equatorial upper-troposphere easterlies over the Asian monsoon regions are also controlled by the absolute angular momentum advection but are mainly maintained by the pressure gradient force in January. The equivalent linear Rayleigh friction, which is widely applied in simple tropical models, is calculated and the corresponding spatial distribution of the local coefficient and damping time scale are estimated from the linear regression. It is found that the linear momentum model is in general capable of crudely describing the tropical atmospheric circulation dynamics, yet the caveat should be kept in mind that the friction coefficient is not uniformly distributed and is even negative in some regions
Measurement and analysis of air quality in temporary shelters on three continents
Millions of displaced people are housed in shelters that generally consist of a single room, meaning that activities including cooking, sleeping and socialising all take place in the same space. Therefore, indoor air quality can be poor, resulting in estimated 20,000 displaced people dying prematurely every year. Very few studies considered the issue and all within one country. This paper describes the first comprehensive study investigating air quality in shelters by looking at Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), Particulate Matter (PM), and CO2 in ten locations within Peru, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Jordan, Turkey and Bangladesh. It has the aim of: (i) discovering how widespread the issue is, (ii) identifying some of the causes, (iii) whether it is linked to cultural and behavioural factors, (iv) location and climate, or (v) sheltersâ materials or design. Results revealed very harmful levels of pollutants that are often linked to excess mortality - with total VOC concentrations as high as 102400ÎŒgm-3 and PM over 3000ÎŒgm-3. The reasons for these concentrations were complex, multifaceted and setting-specific. However, it was an issue in both simple self-built shelters and mass-manufactured designs, and across all climates and cultures. In all cases, conditions could be greatly improved by improving airflow as windows were frequently blocked for various reasons. Therefore, airflow should be explicitly considered, whilst being cognisant of the local context; and when cooking is likely to occur indoors, chimneys must be fitted
