Solubility data are compiled for metals in liquid zinc
Available data is compiled on the solubilities of various metals in liquid zinc. The temperature dependence of the solubility data is expressed using the empirical straight line relationship existing between the logarithm of the solubility and the reciprocal of the absolute temperature

The impact of broadband in schools
The report reviews evidence for the impact of broadband in English schools, exploring; Variations in provision in level of broadband connectivity; Links between the level of broadband activity and nationally accessible performance data; Aspects of broadband connectivity and the school environment that contribute to better outcomes for pupils and teachers; Academic and motivational benefits associated with educational uses of this technology

Tablet PCs in schools: Case study report: A report for Becta by the Open University
The publication provides an analysis of twelve case studies involving schools in England that were using Tablet PCs. The analysis is complemented by brief individual reports describing aspects of how each of these schools was using Tablet PCs
Delta isobar masses, large N_c relations, and the quark model
Motivated by recent remarks on the Delta+ mass and comparisons between the
quark model and relations based on large-N_c with perturbative flavor breaking,
two sets of Delta masses consistent with these constraints are constructed.
These two sets, based either on an experimentally determined mass splitting or
a quark model of isospin symmetry breaking, are shown to be inconsistent. The
model dependence of this inconsistency is examined, and suggestions for
improved experiments are made. An explicit quark model calculation and mass
relations based on the large-N_c limit with perturbative flavor breaking are
compared. The expected level of accuracy of such relations is realized in the
quark model, except for mass relations spanning more than one SU(6)
representation. It is shown that the Delta0 and Delta++ pole masses and Delta0
- Delta+ = (Delta- - Delta++)/3 about 1.5 MeV are more consistent with model
expectations than the analogous Breit-Wigner masses and their splittings.Comment: 10 pages, including 1 eps figure, revte
A ZZ Ceti white dwarf in SDSS J133941.11+484727.5
We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the cataclysmic
variable (CV) SDSSJ133941.11+484727.5 (SDSS1339) which has been discovered in
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4. The orbital period determined from
radial velocity studies is 82.524(24)min, close to the observed period minimum.
The optical spectrum of SDSS1339 is dominated to 90% by emission from the white
dwarf. The spectrum can be successfully reproduced by a three-component model
(white dwarf, disc, secondary) with Twd=12500K for a fixed log g=8.0, d=170pc,
and a spectral type of the secondary later than M8. The mass transfer rate
corresponding to the optical luminosity of the accretion disc is very
low,~1.7x10^-13Msun/yr. Optical photometry reveals a coherent variability at
641s with an amplitude of 0.025mag, which we interpret as non-radial pulsations
of the white dwarf. In addition, a long-period photometric variation with a
period of either 320min or 344min and an amplitude of 0.025mag is detected,
which bears no apparent relation with the orbital period of the system. Similar
long-period photometric signals have been found in the CVs

no working model for this behaviour is available.Comment: MNRAS, in press, 8 pages, 10 figures, some figures downgraded to meet

Scholarly communication in transition: The use of question marks in the titles of scientific articles in medicine, life sciences and physics 1966–2005
The titles of scientific articles have a special significance. We examined nearly 20 million scientific articles and recorded the development of articles with a question mark at the end of their
titles over the last 40 years. Our study was confined to the disciplines of physics, life sciences and medicine, where we found a significant increase from 50% to more than 200% in the number of articles with question-mark titles. We looked at the principle functions and structure of the titles of scientific papers, and we assume that marketing aspects are one of the decisive factors behind the growing usage of question-mark titles in scientific articles

Language support for immigrant children: a study of state schools in the UK and US
In recent decades, immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers have sought a new way of life in large numbers, often leaving their countries of origin behind in search of places that offer a better way of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate how elementary and middle school students in state schools in Reading, England (primarily speakers of Asian languages), and Richmond, Virginia (primarily speakers of Spanish), were supported academically, when most children’s first language was not English. The authors were interested in exploring whether or not there were cultural or structural differences in the way each country helped or hindered these students as they progressed through the school systems. Three UK schools in a district of approximately 100,000 and three US schools in a district of approximately 250,000 were the focus of this exploration from 2000 to 2003. Findings indicated that there were cultural and legislative differences and similarities. Teachers and administrators in both countries attempted to provide services with limited and sometimes diminishing resources. Community support varied based on resources, attitudes toward various ethnic groups, and the coping strategies adopted by these groups in their new environments. Marked differences appeared with regard to the manner in which assessments took place and how the results were made available to the public
