Obtaining Maxwell's equations heuristically
Starting from the experimental fact that a moving charge experiences the
Lorentz force and applying the fundamental principles of simplicity (first
order derivatives only) and linearity (superposition principle), we show that
the structure of the microscopic Maxwell equations for the electromagnetic
fields can be deduced heuristically by using the transformation properties of
the fields under space inversion and time reversal. Using the experimental
facts of charge conservation and that electromagnetic waves propagate with the
speed of light together with Galileo invariance of the Lorentz force allows us
to introduce arbitrary electrodynamic units naturally.Comment: 11 page
Interaction of physical activity and personality in the subjective wellbeing of older adults in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom
Subjective wellbeing (SWB) has been widely accepted as one of the most important elements of successful ageing. The present study explores the impact of two well-established correlates of SWB: physical activity and personality. Physical activity and each of the Big Five personality traits are consistent predictors of SWB, but there has been little research on whether certain personality traits enhance or hinder the psychological benefits of physical activity in older adults. This study examines the interactions of leisure-time physical activity and personality traits on SWB, and whether such interactions vary between older adults in Hong Kong (HK) and older adults in the United Kingdom (UK). Altogether, 349 participants (178 HK, 171 UK; 157 males, 192 female) aged 50 years or above (mean age = 61.84 ± 8.46 years old) completed an online assessment of: (1) leisure-time physical activity (Godin–Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire); (2) personality traits (Big Five Inventory); and (3) SWB (Satisfaction with Life Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule). Results showed that agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, openness to experience, and physical activity were all significantly related to SWB in the expected direction. The relationship between physical activity and SWB was moderated by extraversion and by openness to experience: higher levels of these two traits significantly enhanced the relationship. None of the interactions varied between the HK and UK samples. The expected negative relationship between neuroticism and SWB, however, was significantly stronger in the UK sample than in the HK sample. The findings of the present study indicate that personality needs to be considered when promoting and providing physical activity for older adults, although more research is needed to further explore how this can work effectively
A spectral solver for evolution problems with spatial S3-topology
We introduce a single patch collocation method in order to compute solutions
of initial value problems of partial differential equations whose spatial
domains are 3-spheres. Besides the main ideas, we discuss issues related to our
implementation and analyze numerical test applications. Our main interest lies
in cosmological solutions of Einstein's field equations. Motivated by this, we
also elaborate on problems of our approach for general tensorial evolution
equations when certain symmetries are assumed. We restrict to U(1)- and Gowdy

Evaluation of Trained Immunity by β-1, 3 (D)-Glucan on Murine Monocytes in Vitro and Duration of Response in Vivo
The β-1, 3 (d)-glucan (β-glucan) present in the cell wall of Candida albicans induces epigenetic changes in human monocytes resulting in primed macrophages exhibiting increased cytokine responsiveness to reinfection. This phenomenon is referred to as trained immunity or innate immune memory. However, whether β-glucan can reprogramme murine monocytes in vitro or induce lasting effects in vivo has yet to be elucidated. Thus, purified murine spleen-derived monocytes were primed with β-glucan in vitro and assessed for markers of differentiation and survival. Important macrophage cell markers during monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation were downregulated and survival enhanced due to partial inhibition of apoptosis. Increased survival and not the β-glucan training effect explained the elevated production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNFα) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) induced by subsequent lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. In vivo, 4 days after systemic administration of β-glucan, mice were more responsive to LPS challenge as shown by the increased serum levels of TNFα, IL-6 and IL-10, an effect shown to be short lived as enhanced cytokine production was lost by day 20. Here, we have characterised murine macrophages derived from β-glucan-primed monocytes based on their surface marker expression and for the first time provide evidence that the training effect of β-glucan in vivo declines within a 3-week period
Stabilized Fiber-Optic Distribution of Reference Frequency
An optoelectronic system distributes a reference signal of low noise and highly stabilized phase and frequency (100 MHz) from an atomic frequency standard to a remote facility at a distance up to tens of kilometers. The reference signal is transmitted to the remote station as amplitude modulation of an optical carrier signal propagating in an optical fiber. The stabilization scheme implemented in this system is intended particularly to suppress phase and frequency fluctuations caused by vibrations and by expansion and contraction of the optical fiber and other components in diurnal and seasonal heating and cooling cycles. The system (see figure) comprises several subsystems, the main one being (1) a hydrogen-maser or linear-ion-trap frequency standard in an environmentally controlled room in a signal-processing center (SPC), (2) a stabilized fiber-optic distribution assembly (SFODA), (3) a compensated sapphire oscillator (CSO) in an environmentally controlled room in the remote facility, (4) thermally stabilized distribution amplifiers and cabling from the environmentally controlled room to end users, and (5) performance- measuring equipment
Beliefs around luck : confirming the empirical conceptualization of beliefs around luck and the development of the Darke and Freedman beliefs around luck scale
The current study developed a multi-dimensional measure of beliefs around luck. Two studies introduced the Darke and Freedman beliefs around luck scale where the scale showed a consistent 4 component model (beliefs in luck, rejection of luck, being lucky, and being unlucky) across two samples (n = 250; n = 145). The scales also show adequate reliability statistics and validity by ways of comparison with other measures of beliefs around luck, peer and family ratings and expected associations with measures of personality, individual difference and well-being variables
The role of transposable element clusters in genome evolution and loss of synteny in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae
BACKGROUND: Transposable elements are abundant in the genomes of many filamentous fungi, and have been implicated as major contributors to genome rearrangements and as sources of genetic variation. Analyses of fungal genomes have also revealed that transposable elements are largely confined to distinct clusters within the genome. Their impact on fungal genome evolution is not well understood. Using the recently available genome sequence of the plant pathogenic fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, combined with additional bacterial artificial chromosome clone sequences, we performed a detailed analysis of the distribution of transposable elements, syntenic blocks, and other features of chromosome 7. RESULTS: We found significant levels of conserved synteny between chromosome 7 and the genomes of other filamentous fungi, despite more than 200 million years of divergent evolution. Transposable elements are largely restricted to three clusters located in chromosomal segments that lack conserved synteny. In contradiction to popular evolutionary models and observations from other model organism genomes, we found a positive correlation between recombination rate and the distribution of transposable element clusters on chromosome 7. In addition, the transposable element clusters are marked by more frequent gene duplications, and genes within the clusters have greater sequence diversity to orthologous genes from other fungi. CONCLUSION: Together, these data suggest that transposable elements have a profound impact on the M. oryzae genome by creating localized segments with increased rates of chromosomal rearrangements, gene duplications and gene evolution
Anisotropic superconductivity in NbSe2 probed by magnetic penetration depth
International audienceNbSe2 shows coexistence of a charge density wave (TCDW similar to 32 K) with a superconducting state below T = 7.2 K. Recent ARPES measurements revealed different values of the superconducting gap on the main sheets of the Fermi surface. These results suggest a multigap superconductivity such as in MgB2. The temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth (;.(T)) down to T,11 6 has been measured on high quality single crystals in the Meissner state. A strong increase of the in-plane penetration depth is observed, signaling the presence of low lying excitations. Given the relative contributions of each Fermi surface sheet, these measurements indicate that a reduced gap is not necessarily only found on the small Se sheet as suggested by the ARPES measurements. These results are discussed in a framework of multigap superconductivity
Oral anticoagulant use in cardiovascular disorders: a perspective on present and potential indications for rivaroxaban.
BACKGROUND: Four nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have been approved for use in various cardiovascular indications. The direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran and the direct factor Xa inhibitors apixaban, edoxaban, and rivaroxaban are now increasingly used in clinical practice. For some of these agents, available data from real-world studies support the efficacy and safety data in phase III clinical trials. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to summarize the current status of trials and observational studies of oral anticoagulant use over the spectrum of cardiovascular disorders (excluding venous thrombosis), provide a reference source beyond stroke prevention for atrial fibrillation (AF) and examine the potential for novel applications in the cardiovascular field. METHODS: We searched the recent literature for data on completed and upcoming trials of oral anticoagulants with a particular focus on rivaroxaban. RESULTS: Recent data in specific patient subgroups, such as patients with AF undergoing catheter ablation or cardioversion, have led to an extended approval for rivaroxaban, whereas the other NOACs have ongoing or recently completed trials in this setting. However, there are unmet medical needs for several arterial thromboembolic-related conditions, including patients with: AF and acute coronary syndrome, AF and coronary artery disease undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention, coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease, implanted cardiac devices, and embolic stroke of unknown source. CONCLUSION: NOACs may provide alternative treatment options in areas of unmet need, and numerous studies are underway to assess their benefit-risk profiles in these settings
Gamma-Irradiated Influenza Virus Uniquely Induces IFN-I Mediated Lymphocyte Activation Independent of the TLR7/MyD88 Pathway
Background: We have shown previously in mice, that infection with live viruses, including influenza/A and Semliki Forest virus (SFV), induces systemic partial activation of lymphocytes, characterized by cell surface expression of CD69 and CD86, but not CD25. This partial lymphocytes activation is mediated by type-I interferons (IFN-I). Importantly, we have shown that c-irradiated SFV does not induce IFN-I and the associated lymphocyte activation. Principal Findings: Here we report that, in contrast to SFV, c-irradiated influenza A virus elicits partial lymphocyte activation in vivo. Furthermore, we show that when using influenza viruses inactivated by a variety of methods (UV, ionising radiation and formalin treatment), as well as commercially available influenza vaccines, only c-irradiated influenza virus is able to trigger IFN-I-dependent partial lymphocyte activation in the absence of the TLR7/MyD88 signalling pathways. Conclusions: Our data suggest an important mechanism for the recognition of c-irradiated influenza vaccine by cytosolic receptors, which correspond with the ability of c-irradiated influenza virus to induce cross-reactive and cross-protective cytotoxic T cell responses.Yoichi Furuya, Jennifer Chan, En-Chi Wan, Aulikki Koskinen, Kerrilyn R.
