DICO Toolkit for Digital Career Stories

    Get PDF
Digital Career Stories – Opening new career paths for arts and culture students, or DICO for short, has been a 2-year-long pedagogical development project. Its main objective was to develop innovative narrative and arts- and design-based methods that together form the Digital Career Story methodology introduced in this toolkit. Through the methodology developed, the project aimed to encourage reflection and self-reflection skills in higher education students, along with their digital and creative skills, and to help them build professional identities and design career paths, as well as enhancing their resilience, self-efficacy and self-esteem. The specific target group of the project was students of arts and culture subjects, but the pedagogical methods can just as well be used with other higher education students. The DICO project was the joint effort of a consortium of five European universities: Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS), Finland (as the applicant and coordinator of the project), University of Macerata (UniMC), Italy, Staffordshire University (SU), United Kingdom, Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), Hungary, and the Technical University of Dublin (TU Dublin), Ireland. The project was funded by the Erasmus+ programme and lasted from March 2021 to February 2023.The DICO Toolkit contains the project results in the form of a handbook intended for lecturers, counsellors and mentors in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and for cultural and creative organisations and professionals. It aims to provide both theoretical frameworks and practical tools for developing art-based methodologies with HEI students in the arts and culture. The book is structured into three sections – Theories and methodologies, Implementing creative methods, and Project evaluation and further resources – and concludes with an Appendix

Multicomponent bionanocomposites based on clay nanoarchitectures for electrochemical devices

    Get PDF
Based on the unique ability of defibrillated sepiolite (SEP) to form stable and homogeneous colloidal dispersions of diverse types of nanoparticles in aqueous media under ultrasonication, multicomponent conductive nanoarchitectured materials integrating halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and chitosan (CHI) have been developed. The resulting nanohybrid suspensions could be easily formed into films or foams, where each individual component plays a critical role in the biocomposite: HNTs act as nanocontainers for bioactive species, GNPs provide electrical conductivity (enhanced by doping with MWCNTs) and, the CHI polymer matrix introduces mechanical and membrane properties that are of key significance for the development of electrochemical devices. The resulting characteristics allow for a possible application of these active elements as integrated multicomponent materials for advanced electrochemical devices such as biosensors and enzymatic biofuel cells. This strategy can be regarded as an "a la carte" menu, where the selection of the nanocomponents exhibiting different properties will determine a functional set of predetermined utility with SEP maintaining stable colloidal dispersions of different nanoparticles and polymers in water

Reasons versus Causes in Arocha’s Scientific Realism

    Get PDF
Arocha’s scientific realism (2021) puts at the center of psychology the individual and their variability in behavior: the individual appears to be irreducible to what emerges from the analysis of aggregate data. According to this position, psychology’s aim is to uncover the mechanisms underlying the observable world. This entails adopting the cause-based approach of the natural sciences. Arocha’s article also refers to final causes and intentions and thus to the reason-based approach of the human sciences in contrast to that of the natural sciences. Thus, it is not clear whether the article aims to reduce the final causes to mechanical causes or supports the irreducibility of the former. Starting from these remarks, this comment will argue that the reason-based approach is preferable to the cause-based approach in order to have a scientific psychology. Adopting the reason-based approach also avoids the appeal to aggregate data by focusing upon the single case

The Relationship between Introspection and Folk Psychology: An Overview

    Get PDF
The epistemic status of introspection remains a controversial topic. due to its subjective char- acter, introspection is not an easy fit with natural sciences or a physicalistic picture of the mind. In literature, introspection is conceived as dealing only with macro-cognition and not with micro-cognition, the supposed object of study of scientific psychology. This essay dis- cusses the epistemic status of introspection in light of its relationship with folk psychology and spells it out through an analysis of the positions of Wilkes, Alston, Schwitzgebel, and Churchland. Specifically, the essay makes a distinction between folk and scientific psychol- ogy and addresses the issue of the incorrigibility/infallibility of introspective judgments. The essay endorses a view according to which introspection should be conceived as a cognitive process the contents of which are provided by folk knowledge. It shows how this view can be appreciated as scientific, provided that a physicalistic image of the mind is rejected

Role of metformin and AKT axis modulation in the reversion of hypoxia induced TMZ-resistance in glioma cells

Hypoxia is a key driver of tumor adaptation promoting tumor progression and resistance to therapy. Hypoxia related pathways might represent attractive targets for the treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), that up to date is characterized by a poor prognosis. Primary aim of this study was to investigate the role of hypoxia and hypoxia-related modifications in the effect of temozolomide (TMZ) given alone or in association with the antidiabetic agent Metformin (MET) or the PI3K/mTOR blocker, BEZ235. The study was conducted in the TMZ responsive U251 and resistant T98 GBM cells. Our results showed that during hypoxia, TMZ plus MET reduced viability of U251 cells affecting also CD133 and CD90 expressing cells. This effect was associated with a reduction of HIF-1\u3b1 activity, VEGF release and AKT activation. In T98 TMZ-resistant cells, TMZ plus MET exerted similar effects on HIF-1\u3b1. However, in this cell line, TMZ plus MET failed to reduce CD133 positive cells and AKT phosphorylation. Nevertheless, the administration of the dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor BEZ235 potentiated the effect of TMZ plus MET on cell viability, inducing a pro-apoptotic phenotype during hypoxic condition also in T98 cells, suggesting the block of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway as a complementary target to further overcome GBM resistance during hypoxia. In conclusion, we proposed TMZ plus MET as suitable treatment to revert TMZ-resistance also during hypoxia, an effect potentiated by the inhibition of PI3K/mTOR axis
