Desenho preliminar de uma coleção nuclear de mandioca dentro do banco ativo de germoplasma da Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental.

A mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) destaca-se como um dos cultivos mais importantes na Amazônia, tanto para a segurança alimentar regional como no comércio. A Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental organizou um Banco Ativo de Germoplasma (BAG) para fins de melhoramento e conservação in vivo da variabilidade genética da mandioca, por meio da coleta de germoplasma em diferentes localidades no Estado do Amazonas, visando reunir a diversidade encontrada na região amazônica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenhar uma coleção nuclear de mandioca com base em dados geográficos, morfo-agronômicos e genético-moleculares. Decidiu-se que a Coleção Nuclear deveria conter 50 amostras, representando 15% do BAG e serão representadas por acessos coletados nas calhas dos principais rios Negro, Solimões, Purus, Amazonas e Madeira. As localidades super-representadas no BAG serão alocadas à CN logaritmicamente, enquanto que as localidades sub-representadas serão alocadas proporcionalmente. As amostras selecionadas para a Coleção devem possuir boa produtividade (>13,3 t/há), raízes com polpa de coloração amarelada, teores de HCN acima de 100 mg/kg e divergência genético-moleculares satisfatórias

Exploring the outcomes of digital marketing on historic sites' visitor behaviour

Purpose – Digital communication and social media have an increasing importance in society and in tourism boosting. This study aims to analyse the role of digital marketing in the destination image and visitor loyalty of historic sites. Design/methodology/approach – Using a mixed-method approach combining survey data from 318 respondents and three in-depth interviews. Using structural equations modelling results reveals experience, satisfaction, image and loyalty are concepts to be considered by the destinations’ digital marketing promotion, as well as the increasing use of digital marketing by tourists, in the sense that tourists are increasing the habit of checking the opinion of others before scheduling their trip and gives them more importance, and a growing importance is given by tourists to the web/social networks of places they intend to visit. Findings – This study contributes to the theory on tourism digital marketing which can be transposed to organizations management in order to encourage discussion on the processes of capture, retention and loyalty of target audiences. Research limitations/implications – To enhance the importance of digital marketing in the process of the tourist development of the city, it is fundamental to define a clear strategy for attracting and responding to the greatest demand from cultural tourists who are increasingly interested in actively participating in learning experiences. Practical implications – The results show that digital communication and social media have an increasing importance in society and in tourism boosting and economy recovery. Social implications – The paper presents digital marketing as a possible factor in tourism development and social inclusion, advancing practical measures aimed at social justice through a fairer distribution of tourism revenues and the defence of historic centre residents’ way (i.e. Barcelos’), and quality of life. Originality/value – The authors suggest the development of a strategic digital marketing plan applied to the development and promotion of tourism in the city of Barcelos (Portugal), to complement the research presented here, thus contributing with a more practical perspective of the subject under study.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Formalização e geração de renda: o caso da assessoria à padaria artesanal comunitária "Mãos de Fibra".

Este relato de experiência é originado de um trabalho de extensão com o objetivo de oferecer assessoria técnica e especializada ao empreendimento econômico solidário Padaria Artesanal Comunitária ?Mãos de Fibra?, localizado na zona rural de Viçosa-MG. A Padaria tem a característica de ser predominantemente formada por mulheres rurais. Estas vêm desenvolvendo a produção e comercialização dos pães caseiros. Boa parte da produção resgata a tradição de receitas de seus antepassados. Nessa perspectiva, esta diversidade de produção de alimentos resultou na criação de um novo serviço, denominado ?lanchão?, servidos em eventos. Entre os objetivos específicos, as ações estão orientadas para a formalização do empreendimento em uma associação e para a agregação de valores aos produtos artesanais e agroindustriais já comercializados com a finalidade de qualificar a inserção do grupo em mercados especializados. Entre os resultados, percebe-se que houve melhorias na comunidade desde a formalização do empreendimento ?Associação dos Agricultores Familiares Mãos de Fibra?, pois permitiu a concretização de uma estrutura organizacional formal e autossustentável, possibilitando oferecer condições dignas de trabalho, aumentar a produção e otimizar os resultados econômicos e sociais. Assim, ao capacitar os membros do empreendimento, qualificou-se a possibilidade dessas famílias se tornarem agentes ativos e com papel destacado no processo de desenvolvimento comunitário, contribuindo para a sustentabilidade socioeconômica e criando condições que propiciem melhor renda e qualidade de vida

A tale of two ends: Repurposing metallic compounds from anti‐tumour agents to effective antibacterial activity

Postgraduate Research (1252) Studentship UIDB/04378/2020The rise in antibiotic resistance coupled with the gap in the discovery of active molecules has driven the need for more effective antimicrobials while focusing the attention into the repurpose of already existing drugs. Here, we evaluated the potential antibacterial activity of one cobalt and two zinc metallic compounds previously reported as having anticancer properties. Compounds were tested against a range of Gram‐positive and ‐negative bacteria. The determination of the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations (MIC/MBC) of the drugs were used to assess their potential antibacterial activity and their effect on bacterial growth. Motility assays were conducted by exposing the bacteria to sub‐MIC of each of the compounds. The effect of sub‐MIC of the compounds on the membrane permeability was measured by ethidium bromide (EtBr) accumulation assay. Cell viability assays were performed in human cells. Compound TS262 was the most active against the range of bacteria tested. No effect was observed on the motility or accumulation of EtBr for any of the bacteria tested. Cell viability assays demonstrated that the compounds showed a decrease in cell viability at the MIC. These results are promising, and further studies on these compounds can lead to the development of new effective antimicrobials.publishersversionpublishe

Bone grafts and substitutes in small animal orthopaedic reconstrutive surgery: a breaf review

We present here an overview of the scientific literature concerning the clinical application of autografts and allografts of the skeletal tissues and of the natural and synthetic bone graft substitutes available in small animal orthopedic surgery for resolution of congenital, traumatic and tumoral etiology situations or for reconstructive artroplastic surgeries. This article focuses the terminology, definitions and characteristics of the bone grafts and bone graft substitutes based in their functions and composition, the process of incorporation of the bone grafts and bone graft substitutes, the collection of autogenous cancellous or corticocancellous bone for grafting, the available commercial forms of bone graft or bone graft substitutes and the biologic/synthetic composite grafts, other accessible options in small animal orthopedic surgery with osteogenic and/ or osteoindutive characteristics (ex. collection and use of the autogenous bone marrow or platelet rich plasma), the principal clinical indications and surgical techniques in which are recommended the use of bone graft and/or bone graft substitutes and how to select the best option for each specific clinical case. At last, the future perspectives in reconstructive orthopedic surgery are also pointed, namely the tissue engineering of bone and cartilage tissues and the medical three dimensional biomodulation.Neste artigo pretendeu realizar-se uma revisão da literatura científica da informação disponível sobre os vários tipos de auto- e aloenxertos do sistema musculo-esquelético e substitutos ósseos naturais e sintéticos do tecido ósseo para utilização em cirurgia ortopédica dos animais de companhia com vista à resolução cirúrgica de situações clínicas do foro da traumatologia e ortopedia de etiologia congénita, traumática, tumoral ou em implantações artroplásticas. Abordam-se assim os conceitos gerais sobre a terminologia, definições e classificação dos enxertos e substitutos ósseos com base nas suas funções e composição, o processo de incorporação dos enxertos e substitutos ósseos, os principais locais de obtenção e a correta técnica de transplante de enxertos ósseos autógenos, os principais tipos de enxertos e substitutos ósseos comercializados e os enxertos compostos, outras abordagens autógenas acessíveis em animais de companhia com potencial osteogénico e/ou osteoindutor (ex. obtenção e utilização de medula óssea autógena ou plasma enriquecido em plaquetas), as principais situações clínicas e técnicas cirúrgicas em que se recomenda a utilização de enxertos e/ou substitutos ósseos e como selecionar em cada caso clínico a melhor opção disponível. Por fim, são também abordadas as perspetivas futuras em cirurgia ortopédica reconstrutiva, nomeadamente a engenharia do tecido ósseo e cartilagem e a biomodelação tridimencional médica
