_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABXTRACTA study to characterize the epidemiological status of brucellosis was carried out in the State of Espírito Santo. The State was divided in two regions. Three hundred herds were randomly sampled in each region and a pre-established number of animals were sampled in each of these herds. A total of 5,351 serum samples from 622 herds were collected. In each herd, it was applied an epidemiological questionnaire focused on herd traits as well as husbandry and sanitary practices that could be associated with the risk of infection. The serum samples were screened for antibodies against Brucella spp. by the Rose-Bengal Test (RBT), and all positive sera were re-tested by the 2-mercaptoethanol test (2-ME). The herd was considered positive if at least one animal was positive on both RBT and 2-ME tests. The prevalence of infected herds and animals in the State were, respectively, 9.0% [7.0-11.6%] and 3.5% [1.9-6.4%]. The prevalence of infected herds and animals in the regions were, respectively: region 1, 6.8% [4.5-10.2%] and 3.4% [1.3-8.6%]; and region 2, 10.9% [7.9-14.8%] and 3.7% [2.1-6.3%]. The risk factors (odds ratio, OR) associated with the presence of the infection were: use of artificial insemination (OR = 7.05 [2.51-19.82]) and intensive/semi-intensive management systems (OR = 2.98 [1.22-7.26]). Vaccination of heifers from three to eight months of age was a protective factor (OR = 0.03 [0.01-0.1])

Objective: Vascular malformations are structural anomalies in the blood vessels. They are present at birth and persist throughout life. These malformations can be classified according to the type of vessel involved. A port-wine stain is a vascular malformation characterized by an increased number of ectatic vessels in the dermal vascular plexus, which can be found in any part of the body, including the head and neck region. Over time, most of these stains result in soft tissue hypertrophy and this growth can cause severe facial deformity. Materials and Methods: This study describes a rare case of a giant proliferative vascular anomaly arising from a port-wine stain on the face. Results: The report highlights the continuous and proliferative growth of the malformation observed after follow-up of 18 years, as well as the difficulty in establishing the diagnosis due to the complexity and dimension of the lesion and the conditions related to the patient’s low socioeconomic status. Conclusions: We have described a rare and unusual case report of a giant proliferative vascular malformation arising from a Port-wine stain on the face

A survey to investigate the possible association between the occurrence of abortion and seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis in the State of Espírito Santo, Southeast region of Brazil, was carried out. A total of 5,201 sera from cows > 24 months-old from 571 herds, drawn in two regions of the state (region 1, north of the state, region 2, south of the state), were analyzed. For serological diagnosis of bovine brucellosis the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) was applied as a screening test and the 2-mercaptoethanol test as a confirmatory test. A herd was considered focus when presented at least one seropositive animal. In both regions and in the State, prevalence of brucellosis was significantly higher in herds that have reported the occurrence of abortions and in animals with a history of abortions (P < 0.05), indicating that Brucella abortus may be an important cause of abortions in the State of Espírito Santo

This study was aimed to achieve a better comprehension of the epidemiological aspects of leptospirosis in the Fundação Parque Zoológico de São Paulo. From 1996 to 1999, blood samples were collected from 302 wild animals that were submitted to the Veterinary Division of the zoo for routine procedures. Positive Microscopic Aglutination Test were obtained from them 59 animals were positiv (19,5%) . The most frequent sorovars were copenhageni ( 15/59 = 25.4%), pomona (13/59 = 22%) and castellonis (10/59 = 16.9%). According to the orders and families of examined animals, the most frequent serovars were: Order Primate : copenhageni (13/25 = 52%), castellonis (5/25 = 20%) e grippotyphosa (2/25 = 8%). Family Felidae pomona (12/17 = 70.5%), icterohaemorrhagiae (2/17=11.7%) e grippotyphosa (1/17 = 5.8%). Family Cervidae : mini (1/1 = 100%). Family Bovidae : copenhageni (2/3 = 66.6%), pomona (1/3 = 33.3%). Order Rodentia : castellonis (2/3 = 66.6%). Family Macropodidae : sentot (1/1 = 100%). Family Girafidae : castellonis (1/1 = 100%). Free living specimens of the Muridae ( Rattus norvegicus ) and Didelphidae ( Didelphis marsupialis) families were also examined for Microscopic Aglutination Test and bacteriologic culture. Positive serologycal and bacteriologycal tests for Icterohaemorrhagiae serogrup were found in rodents, such as rats (3/7 = 42.8%) and opossum 2/5 = 40%). These strongly suggest that free-living rodents play na important role in the leptospirosis transmition inside the Zoo. Two specific areas, Extra Sector 1 and Feline Alley were considered critical due to the major proportion of seropositives animals. The possible reasons and these findings were sugestive for the profilatical procidures for the control of the Leptospirosis at the São Paulo Zoo were discussed. Família felidae : pomona (12/17=70.5%), icterohaemorrhagiae (2/17=11.7%) e grippotyphosa (1/17=5.8%), Família canidae : castellonis (2/4=50%), cynopteri (1/4=25%) e mini (1/4=25%), Família cervidae : mini (1/1=100%), Família bovidae : copenhageni (2/3=66.6%), pomona (1/3=33.3%), Família dasyproctidae : castellonis (2/3=66.6%), Família macropodidae: sentot (1/1=100%), família giraffidae : castellonis (1/1=100%).

The aim of this article is to evaluate the efficiency of the cultivation technique in thin layer of Middlebrook 7H11 (TL7H11) for isolating Mycobactererium bovis from suggestive lesions of tuberculosis in cattle and to compare the results with traditional methods of cultivation. At the first step it was used M. bovis AN5 and M. tubercuolosis H37Rv standard strain. The both performance were compared between the cultivation in TL7H11 and in the Stonebrink and Petragnani media. The strains presented visible growing in TL7H11 at the third day of cultivation, while the Stonebrink and Petragnani there were growing just at the 14 day. At the 13 day of cultivation it was possible to differentiate both strains by their colony morphological characteristics. The second step was to cultivate 62 clinicals samples in TL7H11 and Stonebrink for tentative isolation of M. bovis. The isolated samples were detected in TL7H11 until 21 days of cultivation whereas none samples weregrown in Stonebrink tubes.

The finding of four clusters of M. avium (PIG-A, B, C and D), typed by the IS1245-RFLP method, infecting the swine population of the south region of Brazil, the possible existence of virulence differences among them, the role of the virulence in the transmission mechanisms of infections and the existence of reasonable doubts regarding the importance of horizontal transmission for swine micobacteriosis, the virulence of these four strains of M. avium were compared. Bacteria from each cluster were inoculated in 48 hamsters by intra-peritoneal route. On the 2nd, 13th, 26th, and 40th days after inoculation, (T1 to T4), 12 animals of each cluster were sacrificed with vapors of ethyl ether and the bacteria were quantified in the liver, spleen and lung. Results were expressed as cfu/g of organ. The presence of the strains was verified in the blood and histological exams were also accomplished. The four strains induced granulomatous lesions in the liver and spleen since 2 days after inoculation and were disseminated to the lungs through the blood stream. The cfu counts from spleen were always bigger them that obtained from liver and lungs.

Purpose. To evaluate the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT), and the number of dexamethasone implants needed to treat cystoid macular edema (CME) from various etiologies over 12 months in vitrectomized and nonvitrectomized eyes. Methods. This multicenter retrospective cohort study included 112 patients with CME secondary to retinal diseases treated pro re nata (PRN) with a 0.7 mg intravitreal dexamethasone implant for 12 months. The BCVA, CRT, adverse events, safety data, and number of implants were recorded. Results. Vitrectomized and nonvitrectomized eyes received means of three implants and one implant, respectively, over 12 months (P<0.001). The mean BCVA of all patients improved from 0.13 at baseline to 0.33 (P<0.001) 12 months after one (P=0.001), two (P=0.041), and three (P<0.001) implants but not four implants (P=0.068). The mean baseline CRT decreased significantly (P<0.001) from 463 to 254 microns after 12 months with one (P<0.001), two (P=0.002), and three (P=0.001) implants but not with four implants (P=0.114). The anatomic and functional outcomes were not significantly different between vitrectomized and nonvitrectomized eyes. Increased IOP was the most common adverse event (23.2%). Conclusions. Dexamethasone implant administered PRN improved VA and decreased CRT in CME, with possible long-term clinically relevant benefits for treating CME from various etiologies. Vitrectomized eyes needed more implants compared with nonvitrectomized eyes

Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050. This means that unless we take immediate action, we will not be able to establish their current status, much less monitor how it is changing and what is being lostinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
