The essay investigates, from an aesthetic-philosophical perspective, the meaning of Wittgenstein’s “shift” from the approach of the Tractatus to that of the Philosophical Investigations. If in the Tractatus a denotative conception of language induces Wittgenstein to find the essence of language itself in logic, in the Philosophical Investigations, on the contrary, what precedes any possible logical foundation of propositions is a synthetic, properly aesthetic principle: a feeling that cannot be reduced to the sphere of logos. It is precisely in this sense that the notion of perspicuous vision – in its turn strictly connected with the notion of seeing-as – should be understood: a capability to comprehend, i.e. to grasp, the unity within the multiplicity of linguistic games. It is by seeing- as that it is possible to seize, in the visibility of the image, what remains invisible in it. The fact, then, that in the image the invisible offers itself in the visible, while remaining invisible, means that the image manifests a unity of sense which always remains “other” from the image, something that exceeds it. This is indeed what enables the image to configure itself – according to a line of thought running from Nietzsche to Adorno – as a constantly unstable equilibrium between visible and invisible, transparency and opacity, presence and absence
Multitemporal High-Resolution Satellite Images for the Study and Monitoring of an Ancient Mesopotamian City and its Surrounding Landscape: The Case of Ur
The paper concerns the use of multitemporal high-resolution satellite images for the study of the ancient city of Ur, in southern Mesopotamia, inaccessible to scholars from 2003. The acquired dataset is composed by two Gambit KH-7 (1966) and one Corona KH-4B (1968) declassified spy space photos and by few images taken by the recent satellites for civilian use QuickBird-2 (2002, 2004, 2007), Ikonos-2 (2008), and WorldView-1 (2008). The processing of all these images and the integration with ASTER and SRTM DEMs allowed the acquisition of new data about the topographical layout of the city and its monuments and ancient roads; the georeferencing of all archaeological remains and traces visible on the images allowed the upgrade of the archaeological map of Ur. The research also provided important data concerning the reconstruction of the surrounding landscape, where a lot of traces of old channels and riverbeds of the Euphrates were identified in areas much modified and altered during the last decades by urbanization and agricultural works. Moreover, the multitemporal images allowed the monitoring of the conservation of the archaeological area, particularly before and after second Gulf War
Local and territorial determinants in the realization of public–private–partnerships: an empirical analysis for Italian provinces
ABSTRACT
Relational networks and intangible factors are crucial elements for the competitiveness of a territory. Public–Private–Partnerships (PPPs), in particular, allow for the provision of goods and services that favour the exploitation of complementarities between public and private resources. They aim at promoting an increase in the overall efficiency of investment projects through a complex mechanism that distributes risk and revenues among stakeholders. This paper examines the local and territorial determinants of PPPs through an econometric analysis based upon Italian municipal data, grouped at the provincial level. Using a tobit model, we analyse the relationship between the realization of successful PPP initiatives and different sets of factors, including less analysed local and territorial determinants. We stress the role of the local management of infrastructure assets, the administrative efficiency of local authorities and the diffusion of previous local development initiatives. Local management and territorial context factors explain most of the occurrence of successful PPP initiatives in the pre-crisis period while usual determinants (infrastructure endowment and financial distress) display a weaker effect
The importance of human capital in the era of automation
As new technologies continue to displace workers, technological progress also creates new occupations depending on the interplay between humans with machines, causing a skill mismatch. Giuseppe Di Giacomo and Benjamin Lerch discuss how workers are responding to the growing automation of production processes, and why human capital adjustments are crucial for future labour market competition
NodeTrix Planarity Testing with Small Clusters
We study the NodeTrix planarity testing problem for flat clustered graphs
when the maximum size of each cluster is bounded by a constant . We consider
both the case when the sides of the matrices to which the edges are incident
are fixed and the case when they can be chosen arbitrarily. We show that
NodeTrix planarity testing with fixed sides can be solved in
time for every flat clustered graph that can be
reduced to a partial 2-tree by collapsing its clusters into single vertices. In
the general case, NodeTrix planarity testing with fixed sides can be solved in
time for , but it is NP-complete for any . NodeTrix
planarity testing remains NP-complete also in the free sides model when .Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 25th International Symposium on
