Effects of restricted basilar papillar lesions and hair cell regeneration on auditory forebrain frequency organization in adult European Starlings
The frequency organization of neurons in the forebrain Field L complex (FLC) of adult starlings was investigated to determine the effects of hair cell (HC) destruction in the basal portion of the basilar papilla (BP) and of subsequent HC regeneration. Conventional microelectrode mapping techniques were used in normal starlings and in lesioned starlings either 2 d or 6-10 weeks after aminoglycoside treatment. Histological examination of the BP and recordings of auditory brainstem evoked responses confirmed massive loss of HCs in the basal portion of the BP and hearing losses at frequencies >2 kHz in starlings tested 2 d after aminoglycoside treatment. In these birds, all neurons in the region of the FLC in which characteristic frequencies (CFs) normally increase from 2 to 6 kHz had CF in the range of 2-4 kHz. The significantly elevated thresholds of responses in this region of altered tonotopic organization indicated that they were the residue of prelesion responses and did not reflect CNS plasticity. In the long-term recovery birds, there was histological evidence of substantial HC regeneration. The tonotopic organization of the high-frequency region of the FLC did not differ from that in normal starlings, but the mean threshold at CF in this frequency range was intermediate between the values in the normal and lesioned short-recovery groups. The recovery of normal tonotopicity indicates considerable stability of the topography of neuronal connections in the avian auditory system, but the residual loss of sensitivity suggests deficiencies in high-frequency HC function
Analytical solutions of bound timelike geodesic orbits in Kerr spacetime
We derive the analytical solutions of the bound timelike geodesic orbits in
Kerr spacetime. The analytical solutions are expressed in terms of the elliptic
integrals using Mino time as the independent variable. Mino time
decouples the radial and polar motion of a particle and hence leads to forms
more useful to estimate three fundamental frequencies, radial, polar and
azimuthal motion, for the bound timelike geodesics in Kerr spacetime. This
paper gives the first derivation of the analytical expressions of the
fundamental frequencies. This paper also gives the first derivation of the
analytical expressions of all coordinates for the bound timelike geodesics
using Mino time. These analytical expressions should be useful not only to
investigate physical properties of Kerr geodesics but more importantly to
applications related to the estimation of gravitational waves from the extreme

Radiative Models of Sagittarius A* and M87 from Relativistic MHD Simulations
Ongoing millimeter VLBI observations with the Event Horizon Telescope allow
unprecedented study of the innermost portion of black hole accretion flows.
Interpreting the observations requires relativistic, time-dependent physical
modeling. We discuss the comparison of radiative transfer calculations from
general relativistic MHD simulations of Sagittarius A* and M87 with current and
future mm-VLBI observations. This comparison allows estimates of the viewing
geometry and physical conditions of the Sgr A* accretion flow. The viewing
geometry for M87 is already constrained from observations of its large-scale
jet, but, unlike Sgr A*, there is no consensus for its millimeter emission
geometry or electron population. Despite this uncertainty, as long as the
emission region is compact, robust predictions for the size of its jet
launching region can be made. For both sources, the black hole shadow may be
detected with future observations including ALMA and/or the LMT, which would

Rotary atomizer drop size distribution database
Wind tunnel measurements of drop Size distributions from Micronair A U4000 and A U5000 rotary atomizers were collected to develop a database for model use. The measurements varied tank mix, flow rate, air speed, and blade angle conditions, which were correlated by multiple regressions (average R-2 = 0.995 for A U4000 and 0.988 for AU5000). This database replaces an outdated set of rotary atomizer data measured in the 1980s by the USDA Forest Service and fills in a gap in data measured in the 1990s by the Spray Drift Task Force. Since current USDA Forest Service spray projects rely on rotary atomizers, the creation of the database (and its multiple regression interpolation) satisfies a need seen for ten years
Measured UV Exposures of Ironman, Sprint and Olympic-Distance Triathlon Competitors
Triathletes present an extreme case of modelled behaviour in outdoor sport that favours enhanced exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation. This research presents personal solar ultraviolet exposures, measured using all-weather polysulphone film dosimeters, to triathletes during the distinct swimming, cycling and running stages of competitive Sprint, Olympic and Ironman events conducted within Australia and New Zealand. Measurements of exposure are made for each triathlon stage using film dosimeters fixed at a single site to the headwear of competing triathletes. Exposures are expressed relative to the local ambient and as absolute calibrated erythemally effective values across a total of eight triathlon courses (two Ironman, one half Ironman, one Olympic-distance, and four Sprint events). Competitor exposure results during training are also presented. Exposures range from between 0.2 to 6.8 SED/h (SED: standard erythema dose) depending upon the time of year, the local time of each event and cloud conditions. Cycle stage exposures can exceed 20 SED and represent the highest exposure fraction of any triathlon (average = 32%). The next highest stage exposure occurred during the swim (average = 28%), followed by the run (average = 26%). During an Ironman, personal competitor exposures exceed 30 SED, making triathlon a sporting discipline with potentially the highest personal ultraviolet exposure risk
Locating the intense interstellar scattering towards the inner Galaxy
We use VLBA+VLA observations to measure the sizes of the scatter-broadened
images of 6 of the most heavily scattered known pulsars: 3 within the Galactic
Centre (GC) and 3 elsewhere in the inner Galactic plane. By combining the
measured sizes with temporal pulse broadening data from the literature and
using the thin-screen approximation, we locate the scattering medium along the
line of sight to these 6 pulsars. At least two scattering screens are needed to
explain the observations of the GC sample. We show that the screen inferred by
previous observations of SGR J1745-2900 and Sgr A*, which must be located far
from the GC, falls off in strength on scales < 0.2 degree. A second scattering
component closer to (< 2 kpc) or even (tentatively) within (< 700 pc) the GC
produces most or all of the temporal broadening observed in the other GC
pulsars. Outside the GC, the scattering locations for all three pulsars are ~2
kpc from Earth, consistent with the distance of the Carina-Sagittarius or
Scutum spiral arm. For each object the 3D scattering origin coincides with a
known HII region (and in one case also a supernova remnant), suggesting that
such objects preferentially cause the intense interstellar scattering seen
towards the Galactic plane. We show that the HII regions should contribute >
25% of the total dispersion measure (DM) towards these pulsars, and calculate
reduced DM distances. Those distances for other pulsars lying behind HII

Transforming primary medical research knowledge into clinical decision
While the utility of computerized clinical decision support (CCDS) for multiple select clinical domains has been clearly demonstrated, much less is known about the full breadth of domains to which CCDS approaches could be productively applied. To explore the applicability of CCDS to general medical knowledge, we sampled a total of 500 primary research articles from 4 high-impact medical journals. Employing rule-based templates, we created high-level CCDS rules for 72% (361/500) of primary medical research articles. We subsequently identified data sources needed to implement those rules. Ourfindings suggest that CCDS approaches, perhaps in the form of non-interruptive infobuttons, could be much more broadly applied. In addition, our analytic methods appear to provide a means of prioritizing and quantitating the relative utility of available data sources for purposes of CCDS
