On the Limits of Photocatalytic Water Splitting

    Get PDF
The major drawbacks on the limited H2 and O2 evolution activities of one-step photocatalytic water splitting systems are given here with the emphasis on charge recombination, back-oxidation reactions, and mass transfer limitations. Suppression of these unwanted phenomena is shown to be possible with the usage of small crystal-sized photocatalysts with low defect concentrations, presence of phase junctions, selection of co-catalyst that would be active for H2 evolution but inactive for O2 reduction, coating of the co-catalyst or the whole photocatalyst with selectively permeable nanolayers, and usage of photocatalytic systems with high solid–liquid and liquid–gas surface areas. The mass transfer limitations are shown to be important especially in the liquid–gas interfaces for agitated and suspended systems with estimated H2 transfer rates in the range of ∼200–8000 μmol/h

Plasmacytoma of the Nasolacrimal Duct Simulating Dacryocystitis: An Uncommon Presentation for Extramedullary Relapse of Multiple Myeloma

The most common site for localized forms of plasma cell neoplasms (extramedullary plasmacytoma; EMP) is the upper respiratory tract, including the oropharynx, nasal cavities, sinuses and larynx. A 50-year-old woman with a history of myeloma in complete remission after autologous stem cell transplantation complained of two weeks of epiphora of the left eye with subsequent diplopia, bloody nasal discharge and progressive swelling around the nasolacrimal sac. A solitary mass in the left sinonasal area, extending to the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) was detected on MRI, whose histopathological examination was consistent with plasmacytoma. Further clinical investigation ruled out multiple myeloma (MM). The patient underwent debulking surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy followed by local radiotherapy in an attempt to achieve complete response. Despite being a rare entity, EMP of the NLD should be considered in the differential diagnosis of epiphora and dacryocystitis. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a plasmacytoma of the NLD presenting as isolated extramedullary relapse of MM. The follow-up in EMPs should include appropriate imaging studies, a systemic workup to rule out MM

Dissociation of HNO3 in water revisited : experiment and theory

    Get PDF
Nitric acid dissociation in water is studied as a function of concentration, employing experimental techniques (1H NMR spectroscopy and calorimetry), quantum chemical methods (B3LYP and PBE functionals for molecular clusters) and molecular dynamics simulations (the PBE-D3 functional for solutions under periodic boundary conditions). The extent of dissociation, via proton transfer to a neighboring water molecule, as a function of concentration is studied computationally for molecular nitric acid clusters HNO3(H2O)x (x = 1–8), as well as periodic liquids (HNO3 mole fractions of 0.19 and 0.5, simulated at T = 300 K and 450 K). Despite the simple nature of these structural models, their computed and simulated average 1H chemical shifts compare well with the experimental measurements in this study. Finally, the measured and calculated chemical shifts have shown reasonable relationships with the enthalpy change upon mixing of this binary complex.Peer reviewe

Bu araştırmanın temel amacı son ergenlik dönemindeki bireylerin dissosiyatif bulguları ile ruminasyon düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkide duyguları ifade etmenin aracı rolünü̈ incelemektir. Araştırmaya 18-24 yasları arasında olan 502 kişi katılmıştır. Veriler, Sosyodemografik Bilgi Formu, Dissosiyasyon Ölçeği (DIS-Q), Ruminatif Düşünce Biçimi Ölçeği (RDBÖ) ve Duyguları İfade Etme Ölçeği (DİEÖ) aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre son ergenlik dönemindeki bireylerin ruminasyon düzeyleri arttıkça duyguları ifade etme düzeylerinin azaldığı ve dissosiyasyon düzeylerinin arttığı; duyguları ifade etme düzeyleri azaldıkça dissosiyasyon düzeylerinin arttığı görülmüştür. Son ergenlik dönemindeki bireylerin dissosiyatif bulguları ile ruminasyon düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkide duyguları ifade etmenin kısmi aracı etkisi olduğu saptanmıştır. Araştırmamızın söz konusu değişkenlerin geçmiş araştırmalarda sınırlı sayıda incelenmesi açısından literatüre katkı sağladığı düşünülmektedir. The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of expressing feelings on the relationship between dissociative findings and rumination levels of individuals in the late adolescence period. The study included 502 people between the age of 18-24. The data were collected through the Sociodemographic Information Form, Dissociation Questionnaire (DIS-Q), Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire and Emotional Expression Questionnaire. According to the findings obtained from the study, as the rumination levels of the individuals in the late adolescent period increased, the level of expressing their feelings decreased and the dissociation levels increased; it was observed that as the expression levels of emotions decreased, the dissociation levels increased. It was found that expressing feelings had a partial mediator effect on the relationship between dissociative findings and rumination levels of individuals in the late adolescent period. It is thought that our study contributed to the literature in terms of examining these variables in a limited number of previous studies.Publisher's Versio

AbstractIntroductionAn earthquake occurred on October 23, 2011 at 13:41 in the Van city of Turkey. According to the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, the magnitude of this earthquake was measured as 7.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake caused deaths and injuries due to entrapment under the debris. This study has been planned in order to evaluate the features of these deaths and to discuss the obtained data comparatively with the literature.Materials and methodsExternal examination of the corpses and autopsy reports drawn up for Van Attorney Generalship in the city center were evaluated retrospectively.ResultsTotally 51 deaths secondary to the entrapment under the debris were analyzed. Twenty-seven cases (52.9%) were females and 24 cases (47.1%) were males. All the deaths occurred in houses or workplaces. The causes of deaths were as follows: head trauma together with visceral organ laceration in 30 cases (58.8%), mechanic asphyxia in 14 cases (27.5%) and the crush syndrome in seven cases (13.7%). Deaths due to the crush syndrome occurred after victims’ were rescued alive after having been under the debris.ConclusionTraumatic findings are usually generalized and extensive in deaths related with earthquakes. Multiple fractures of cranial bones, ribs, extremities and injuries of visceral organs and major vessels are determined in the external examination. On the other hand, forensic pathologists should not disregard the diagnosis of the crush syndrome in traumatic deaths, especially if the trauma is secondary to the entrapment under the debris following an earthquake

Hypoxia induces an early primitive streak signature, enhancing spontaneous elongation and lineage representation in gastruloids

The cellular microenvironment, together with intrinsic regulators, shapes stem cell identity and differentiation capacity. Mammalian early embryos are exposed to hypoxia in vivo and appear to benefit from hypoxic culture in vitro. Yet, how hypoxia influences stem cell transcriptional networks and lineage choices remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the molecular effects of acute and prolonged hypoxia on embryonic and extra-embryonic stem cells as well as the functional impact on differentiation potential. We find a temporal and cell type-specific transcriptional response including an early primitive streak signature in hypoxic embryonic stem cells mediated by HIF1α. Using a 3D gastruloid differentiation model, we show that hypoxia-induced T expression enables symmetry breaking and axial elongation in the absence of exogenous WNT activation. When combined with exogenous WNT activation, hypoxia enhances lineage representation in gastruloids, as demonstrated by highly enriched signatures of gut endoderm, notochord, neuromesodermal progenitors and somites. Our findings directly link the microenvironment to stem cell function and provide a rationale supportive of applying physiological conditions in models of embryo development

Aim: To compare our parameters as regards: i) cell count via two different automated cell count techniques, and ii) viability via automated trypan blue exclusion and 7-aminoactinomycin D (7-AAD) staining. Method: We used the trypan blue exclusion technique and an automated cell counter and for viability testing, and the trypan blue exclusion technique and the 7-AAD evaluation by flow cytometry. The trypan blue exclusion and the radio frequency techniques were used for automated cell counting. Flow cytometric analysis was performed by evaluating the yielded cellular products for 7-AAD uptake during the cell count of CD34+ cells. Results: The mean values for cell count were estimated as 3.44±1.22x106/ml (range, 2.48-5.71x106/ml) and 4.14±1.94x106/ml (range, 1.77-7.43x106/ml) for the trypan blue exclusion and radio frequency techniques, respectively. Additionally, the mean values for viability analyses via the automated trypan blue exclusion and 7-AAD were 93.38±6.09% (range, 79.00-98.00%) and 99.49±0.60% (range, 98.40-100.00%), respectively. Conclusions: Our study has responded to two fundamental questions: whether the results of both of the automated techniques for cell count correspond with each other, and whether the results of the automated viability assessment conform those of the 7-AAD technique during the manufacturing processes of cellular therapy products intended for clinical use. Even though we have the opportunity to use the hemocytometer in our laboratory setting, the automated trypan blue exclusion technique gives cell count results in concordance within the range of the expectations of our Quality Management System (QMS)
