    Estudio palinológico del género Macroptilium (Benth.) Urb. (Leguminosae) en México y Centroamérica

    The pollen morphology of eight Macroptilium species occurring in Mexico and Central America is described by means of light and scanning microscopy. In this region, members of the genus have pollen grains 3-colporate, medium-sized, with polar shapes from prolate-spheroidal, suboblate to oblate-spheroidal. Differences in ectoaperture (length, apex shape and membrane), ornamentation, margo, and the outline in polar side identify two pollen types: Type I. Pollen with small colpi (brevicolpate), margo thickened, apex of the ectoaperture round, membrane granular, polar outline convex angular, exine tectate or semitectate, apocolpium punctate or rugulate, and mesocolpium microreticulate or rugulate. Species of section Microcochle, including M. gibbosifolium, M. pedatum, and M. supinum are characterized by this pollen type. Type II. Pollen with long colpi (longicolpate) margo non-thickened, apex of the ectoaperture acute, membrane granular, pollen outline circular to semi-angular, exine tectate or semitectate, apocolpium punctate to foveolate, and mesocolpium microreticulate to foveolate. Species of section Macroptilium comprising, M. atropurpureum, M. erythroloma, M. gracile, M. lathyroides, and M. longipedunculatum are distinguished by this pollen type. Palynological descriptions of five species of Macroptilium are provided for the first time.Se describe la morfología del polen de ocho especies del género Macroptilium con distribución en México y Centroamérica, a partir de granos acetolizados y observados bajo microscopio de luz y microscopio electrónico de barrido. En esta región geográfica los miembros del género tienen granos de polen tricolporados, prolado-esferoidales, suboblados a rara vez oblado-esferoidales, de tamaño generalmente mediano. De acuerdo con las diferencias en las ectoaberturas (longitud, forma del ápice y membrana), ornamentación de la exina, engrosamiento del margo y contorno en vista polar se distinguen dos tipos polínicos: Tipo I. Polen con colpos cortos (brevicolpos), margo engrosado, ápice de la ectoabertura redondeado, membrana granular, contorno angular convexo, exina tectada o semitectada, punctada a rugulada en el apocolpio y microrreticulada a rugulada en el mesocolpio; característico de la sección Microcochle, representada por M. gibbosifolium, M. pedatum y M. supinum. Tipo II. Polen con colpos largos (longicolpos), margo no engrosado, ápice de la ectoabertura agudo, membrana granular, contorno circular a semiangular, exina tectada a semitectada, psilada, punctada, foveolada a microrreticulada en el apocolpio y microrreticulada a foveolada en el mesocolpio; este tipo distingue a las especies de la sección Macroptilium, incluyendo a M. atropurpureum, M. erythroloma, M. gracile, M. lathyroides y M. longipedunculatum.     Extrafloral nectaries in Leguminosae: phylogenetic distribution, morphological diversity and evolution

    Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) mediating ecologically important ant-plant protection mutualisms are especially common and unusually diverse in the Leguminosae. We present the first comprehensively curated list of legume genera with EFNs, detailing and illustrating their systematic and phylogenetic distributions, locations on the plant, morphology and anatomy, based on a unified classification of EFN categories and a time-calibrated phylogeny incorporating 710 of the 768 genera. This new synthesis, the first since McKey (1989)?s seminal paper, increases the number of genera with EFNs to 152 (20% of legumes), distributed across subfamilies Cercidoideae (1), Detarioideae (19), Caesalpinioideae (87) and Papilionoideae (45). EFNs occur at nine locations, and are most prevalent on vegetative plant parts, especially leaves (74%) and inflorescence axes (26%). Four main categories (with eight subcategories) are recognized: formless, trichomatic (exposed, hollow), parenchymatic (embedded, pit, flat, elevated) and abscission zone EFNs (non-differentiated, swollen scars). Phylogenetic reconstruction of EFNs suggests independent evolutionary trajectories of different EFN types, with elevated EFNs restricted almost exclusively to Caesalpinioideae (where they underwent spectacular morphological disparification), flat EFNs in Detarioideae, swollen scar EFNs in Papilionoideae, and Cercidoideae is the only subfamily bearing intrastipular EFNs.     Autogenic Training Relaxation Helping Postpartum Mothers to Achieve Successful Breastfeeding on Early Lactation Period

    Introduction: The numbers of breastfeeding failures are mostly caused by mothers` disbelief to themselves. One method that can be done to overcome these problems in accordance with the self-care nursing theory is the autogenic training relaxation. This method teaches mothers to be self-sufficient in building a positive intention and motivation to help the process of breastfeeding. This study aimed to examine the influence of autogenic training relaxation to the effectiveness of breastfeeding and the enhancement of breast milk volume on maternal postpartum. Method: By using an experimental posttest only-non equivalent control group design, 26 samples were taken based on the criteria and divided into two groups by matching technuiqe. autogenic training was given through MP3 Player for 3 weeks. Post-test observation conducted on the third week by home visit. Via Christi Breastfeeding Assessment Tool Jan Riordan modifications used to assess the effectiveness of breastfeeding, and to measure the milk ejection volume, used weighing test using electronic baby scales. Data were analyzed using one-tailed independent t test with α ≤ 0.05. Result: The analysis showed that mothers who did autogenic training relaxation could breastfeed more effectively and had greater average volume of milk ejection than the control group (p = 0.000 and p = 0.001). Discussion: It can be concluded that autogenic relaxation training techniques affect the effectiveness of breastfeeding and breast milk volume. These results can be considered that autogenic training as an intervention in program of support for breastfeeding mothers

    Plant diversity patterns in neotropical dry forests and their conservation implications

The final version is available from American Association for the Advancement of Science via the DOI in this record.Seasonally dry tropical forests are distributed across Latin America and the Caribbean and are highly threatened, with less than 10% of their original extent remaining in many countries. Using 835 inventories covering 4660 species of woody plants, we show marked floristic turnover among inventories and regions, which may be higher than in other neotropical biomes, such as savanna. Such high floristic turnover indicates that numerous conservation areas across many countries will be needed to protect the full diversity of tropical dry forests.     Extinction risk of Mesoamerican crop wild relatives

    Ensuring food security is one of the world's most critical issues as agricultural systems are already being impacted by global change. Crop wild relatives (CWR)—wild plants related to crops—possess genetic variability that can help adapt agriculture to a changing environment and sustainably increase crop yields to meet the food security challenge. Here we report the results of an extinction risk assessment of 224 wild relatives of some of the world's most important crops (i.e. chilli pepper, maize, common bean, avocado, cotton, potato, squash, vanilla and husk tomato) in Mesoamerica—an area of global significance as a centre of crop origin, domestication and of high CWR diversity. We show that 35% of the selected CWR taxa are threatened with extinction according to The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List demonstrates that these valuable genetic resources are under high anthropogenic threat. The dominant threat processes are land use change for agriculture and farming, invasive and other problematic species (e.g. pests, genetically modified organisms) and use of biological resources, including overcollection and logging. The most significant drivers of extinction relate to smallholder agriculture—given its high incidence and ongoing shifts from traditional agriculture to modern practices (e.g. use of herbicides)—smallholder ranching and housing and urban development and introduced genetic material. There is an urgent need to increase knowledge and research around different aspects of CWR. Policies that support in situ and ex situ conservation of CWR and promote sustainable agriculture are pivotal to secure these resources for the benefit of current and future generations

Dicha postura, de conciencia crítica y sensibilización social, sumada a la experiencia adquirida mediante el trabajo articulado con otras instituciones de índole académico y de forma directa con las comunidades, permitió establecer como objetivo central del evento la reflexión de los diferentes grupos de interés, la gestión de sus impactos como elementos puntuales que contribuyeron en la audiencia a la toma de conciencia frente al papel que se debe asumir a favor de la responsabilidad social como aporte seguro al desarrollo regional y a su vez al fortalecimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible
