Corrosion of Civil War Era Sub Marine ExplorerâPart 1
The Sub Marine Explorer is one of five submersibles (submarines) constructed prior to 1870 that have survived either in museums or as in situ archaeological sites around the world. Since 1869, the wreck of Explorer has emerged at low tide on the beach of Isla San Telmo, ArchipiĂŠlago de las Perlas, Panama, located ~75 km southwest of Panama City in the Bay of Panama. In 2001, James Delgado visited the site. Locals described the wreck as a World War II-era Japanese midget submarine. Delgado consulted with Richard Wills, an expert on American Civil War submarines, and confirmed that the well-preserved wreck was the Sub Marine Explorer from the Civil War period

The Sub Marine Explorer was designed and built by Julius H. Kroehl, who was born in Prussia in 1820. After migrating to the United States in 1838 and becoming a citizen, he served in the Union Navy (United States Navy during the Civil War) as an underwater demolitions expert. He left the Navy in 1863 and began designing a âsub-marineâ that would facilitate Union forcesâ mine removal and obstruction clearance. At the end of the Civil War, he became an engineer for the Pacific Pearl Co., an organization interested in using the craft to recover pearls from deep sea oyster beds in the Bay of Panama. Decompression sickness (the bends), unknown at the time, began to affect the crew in 1869, which led to the abandonment of Explorer in the tidal zone of St. Elmoâs Island (Isla San Telmo) in the Archipielago de las Perlas, Panama

Changes in the Activities, Functions, and Roles of Public Health Educators
Accounts of early activities of public health educators, statements of the American Public Health Association on the qualifications and functions of these educators, and studies concerned with their responsibilities, functions, work, or roles are reviewed. These point up the three major foci in public health education over time in the U.S., viz, dissemination of information, community organization, and health behavior and program planning. Limited mitochondrial permeabilisation causes DNA-damage and genomic instability in the absence of cell death
During apoptosis, the mitochondrial outer membrane is permeabilized, leading to the release of cytochrome c that activates downstream caspases. Mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP) has historically been thought to occur synchronously and completely throughout a cell, leading to rapid caspase activation and apoptosis. Using a new imaging approach, we demonstrate that MOMP is not an all-or-nothing event. Rather, we find that a minority of mitochondria can undergo MOMP in a stress-regulated manner, a phenomenon we term "minority MOMP." Crucially, minority MOMP leads to limited caspase activation, which is insufficient to trigger cell death. Instead, this caspase activity leads to DNA damage that, in turn, promotes genomic instability, cellular transformation, and tumorigenesis. Our data demonstrate that, in contrast to its well-established tumor suppressor function, apoptosis also has oncogenic potential that is regulated by the extent of MOMP. These findings have important implications for oncogenesis following either physiological or therapeutic engagement of apoptosis
Spitzer and JCMT Observations of the Active Galactic Nucleus in the Sombrero Galaxy (NGC 4594)
We present Spitzer 3.6-160 micron images, Spitzer mid-infrared spectra, and
JCMT SCUBA 850 micron images of the Sombrero Galaxy (NGC 4594), an Sa galaxy
with a 10^9 M_solar low luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN). The brightest
infrared sources in the galaxy are the nucleus and the dust ring. The spectral
energy distribution of the AGN demonstrates that, while the environment around
the AGN is a prominent source of mid-infrared emission, it is a relatively weak
source of far-infrared emission, as had been inferred for AGN in previous
research. The weak nuclear 160 micron emission and the negligible polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbon emission from the nucleus also implies that the nucleus is
a site of only weak star formation activity and the nucleus contains relatively
little cool interstellar gas needed to fuel such activity. We propose that this
galaxy may be representative of a subset of low ionization nuclear emission
region galaxies that are in a quiescent AGN phase because of the lack of gas
needed to fuel circumnuclear star formation and Seyfert-like AGN activity.
Surprisingly, the AGN is the predominant source of 850 micron emission. We
examine the possible emission mechanisms that could give rise to the 850 micron
emission and find that neither thermal dust emission, CO line emission,
bremsstrahlung emission, nor the synchrotron emission observed at radio
wavelengths can adequately explain the measured 850 micron flux density by
themselves. The remaining possibilities for the source of the 850 micron
emission include a combination of known emission mechanisms, synchrotron
emission that is self-absorbed at wavelengths longer than 850 microns, or
unidentified spectral lines in the 850 micron band.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 200
What punishment expresses
In this article, I consider the question of what punishment expresses and propose a way of approaching the question that overcomes problems in both psychosocial and philosophical expressivist traditions. The problem in both traditions is, I suggest, the need for an adequate moral â neither moralizing nor reductive â psychology, and I argue that Melanie Kleinâs work offers such a moral psychology. I offer a reconstruction of Kleinâs central claims and begin to sketch some of its potential implications for an expressive account of punishment. I outline a Kleinian interpretation of modern punishmentâs expression as of an essentially persecutory nature but also include depressive realizations that have generally proved too difficult for liberal modernity to work through successfully, and the recent âpersecutory turnâ is a defence against such realizations. I conclude by considering the wider philosophical significance of a Kleinian account for the expressivist theory of punishment
The Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
This paper describes the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS), marking the completion of the original goals of the SDSS and the end of
the phase known as SDSS-II. It includes 11663 deg^2 of imaging data, with most
of the roughly 2000 deg^2 increment over the previous data release lying in
regions of low Galactic latitude. The catalog contains five-band photometry for
357 million distinct objects. The survey also includes repeat photometry over
250 deg^2 along the Celestial Equator in the Southern Galactic Cap. A
coaddition of these data goes roughly two magnitudes fainter than the main
survey. The spectroscopy is now complete over a contiguous area of 7500 deg^2
in the Northern Galactic Cap, closing the gap that was present in previous data
releases. There are over 1.6 million spectra in total, including 930,000
galaxies, 120,000 quasars, and 460,000 stars. The data release includes
improved stellar photometry at low Galactic latitude. The astrometry has all
been recalibrated with the second version of the USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog
(UCAC-2), reducing the rms statistical errors at the bright end to 45
milli-arcseconds per coordinate. A systematic error in bright galaxy photometr
is less severe than previously reported for the majority of galaxies. Finally,
we describe a series of improvements to the spectroscopic reductions, including
better flat-fielding and improved wavelength calibration at the blue end,
better processing of objects with extremely strong narrow emission lines, and
