Extrapolation of neutron-rich isotope cross-sections from projectile fragmentation
Using the measured fragmentation cross sections produced from the 48Ca and
64Ni beams at 140 MeV per nucleon on 9Be and 181Ta targets, we find that the
cross sections of unmeasured neutron rich nuclei can be extrapolated using a
systematic trend involving the average binding energy. The extrapolated
cross-sections will be very useful in planning experiments with neutron rich
isotopes produced from projectile fragmentation. The proposed method is general
and could be applied to other fragmentation systems including those used in
other radioactive ion beam facilities.Comment: accepted for publication in Europhysics Letter
Failure of hydrogenation in protecting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from fragmentation
A recent study of soft X-ray absorption in native and hydrogenated coronene
cations, CH , led to the conclusion that additional
hydrogen atoms protect (interstellar) Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH)
molecules from fragmentation [Reitsma et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 053002
(2014)]. The present experiment with collisions between fast (30-200 eV) He
atoms and pyrene (CH, , 6, and 16) and simulations
without reference to the excitation method suggests the opposite. We find that
the absolute carbon-backbone fragmentation cross section does not decrease but
increases with the degree of hydrogenation for pyrene molecules.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
On well-posedness, stability, and bifurcation for the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow
In this article, we study the axisymmetric surface diffusion flow (ASD), a
fourth-order geometric evolution law. In particular, we prove that ASD
generates a real analytic semiflow in the space of (2 + \alpha)-little-H\"older
regular surfaces of revolution embedded in R^3 and satisfying periodic boundary
conditions. We also give conditions for global existence of solutions and prove
that solutions are real analytic in time and space. Further, we investigate the
geometric properties of solutions to ASD. Utilizing a connection to
axisymmetric surfaces with constant mean curvature, we characterize the
equilibria of ASD. Then, focusing on the family of cylinders, we establish
results regarding stability, instability and bifurcation behavior, with the

A discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator for simplicial surfaces
We define a discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator for simplicial surfaces. It
depends only on the intrinsic geometry of the surface and its edge weights are
positive. Our Laplace operator is similar to the well known finite-elements
Laplacian (the so called ``cotan formula'') except that it is based on the
intrinsic Delaunay triangulation of the simplicial surface. This leads to new
definitions of discrete harmonic functions, discrete mean curvature, and
discrete minimal surfaces. The definition of the discrete Laplace-Beltrami
operator depends on the existence and uniqueness of Delaunay tessellations in
piecewise flat surfaces. While the existence is known, we prove the uniqueness.
Using Rippa's Theorem we show that, as claimed, Musin's harmonic index provides
an optimality criterion for Delaunay triangulations, and this can be used to
prove that the edge flipping algorithm terminates also in the setting of

The N = 16 spherical shell closure in 24O
The unbound excited states of the neutron drip-line isotope 24O have been
investigated via the 24O(p,p')23O+n reaction in inverse kinematics at a beam
energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of 24O* was reconstructed
from the momenta of 23O and the neutron. The spin-parity of the first excited
state, observed at Ex = 4.65 +/- 0.14 MeV, was determined to be Jpi = 2+ from
the angular distribution of the cross section. Higher lying states were also
observed. The quadrupole transition parameter beta2 of the 2+ state was
deduced, for the first time, to be 0.15 +/- 0.04. The relatively high
excitation energy and small beta2 value are indicative of the N = 16 shell

Families of Canonical Transformations by Hamilton-Jacobi-Poincar\'e equation. Application to Rotational and Orbital Motion
The Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the sense of Poincar\'e, i.e. formulated in
the extended phase space and including regularization, is revisited building
canonical transformations with the purpose of Hamiltonian reduction. We
illustrate our approach dealing with orbital and attitude dynamics. Based on
the use of Whittaker and Andoyer symplectic charts, for which all but one
coordinates are cyclic in the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, we provide whole
families of canonical transformations, among which one recognizes the familiar
ones used in orbital and attitude dynamics. In addition, new canonical
transformations are demonstrated.Comment: 21 page
Impermeability effects in three-dimensional vesicles
We analyse the effects that the impermeability constraint induces on the
equilibrium shapes of a three-dimensional vesicle hosting a rigid inclusion. A
given alteration of the inclusion and/or vesicle parameters leads to shape
modifications of different orders of magnitude, when applied to permeable or
impermeable vesicles. Moreover, the enclosed-volume constraint wrecks the
uniqueness of stationary equilibrium shapes, and gives rise to pear-shaped or
stomatocyte-like vesicles.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Severe hereditary spherocytosis and distal renal tubular acidosis associated with the total absence of band 3
Absence of band 3, associated with the mutation Coimbra (V488M) in the homozygous state, caused severe hereditary spherocytosis in a young child. Although prenatal testing was made available to the parents, it was declined. Because the fetus stopped moving near term, an emergency cesarean section was performed and a severely anemic, hydropic female baby was delivered. She was resuscitated and initially kept alive with respiratory assistance and hypertransfusion therapy. Cord blood smears revealed erythroblastosis, poikilocytosis, and red cells with stalk-like elongations. Band 3 and protein 4.2 were absent; spectrin, ankyrin, and glycophorin A were significantly reduced. Renal tubular acidosis was detected by the age of 3 months. Nephrocalcinosis appeared soon thereafter. After 3 years of follow-up the child is doing reasonably well on a regimen that includes regular blood transfusions and daily bicarbonate supplements. The long-term prognosis remains uncertain given the potential for hematologic and renal complications
