The Distribution of the Genus Tradescantia in Iowa

    Get PDF
The Tradescantias in the Grinnell herbarium have been critically studied with a view to determining the species and their distribution. Subsequently the collections at the herbaria at the State College at Ames and the State University at Iowa City have been reviewed. Grateful acknowledgement is made to Mr. R. I. Cratty of the State College at Ames, and to Dr. B. Shimek and Dr. R. B. Wylie at Iowa City, for their aid in the use of the College and University collections. Further credit is due to Dr. H. S. Conard for guidance and suggestions

History of the 313th Infantry in World War II

Foreword This history of the 313th Infantry is the result, actually, of a definite policy established early in the career of the Regiment. Col Sterling A. Wood took command in the spring of 1943, and one of the first questions he asked (and he has asked many since) was what was being done about a history of the Regiment. Answers were to the effect that the prospect had not advanced beyond the talking stage. The net result of the discussion was the termination of that stage and the initiation of the next one, i.e., getting something done about it. Maj (then Capt) Raymond P. Godwin, the Regimental S-2, was given the task of organizing the work. He appointed Pfc Robert G. Deihl as recorder, and Pfc Stig Stabe as photographer. Thereafter a very fine camera was purchased in order that a photographic record of events might be kept, and Pfc Deihl began immediately to write up notes on the history of the Regiment as it had unfolded itself up until that date. Deihl continued this work until the Regiment went overseas, when it was necessary to leave his accumulated manuscript behind, for security reasons. And, due to the pressure of business (!) in Normandy and elsewhere, there was little time or opportunity to establish the proper cultural surroundings appropriate to literary composition. The mere fact that Deihl was able to transcribe the entries on the Regimental log into a cohesive narrative at all, is a tribute to his industry and ingenuity. With the end of the war came increased opportunity for work on the history. The breaking up of the Division interfered, of course, but plans were made whereby this obstacle could largely be transcended. Capt Thomas L. Lyons, the last S-2, volunteered to give his free time, after his return to the States, to the furtherance of the work. He and Deihl planned to go into conference with the Infantry Journal Press in Washington, D. C., whose policy on unit histories made the publication of this book possible. It is the spirit of loyalty and self-sacrifice of these two that deserves the gratitude of us all. The book has been written by various people, which largely accounts for its non-uniformity of style. It is not intended to be a literary masterpiece, however, and I am quite sure that none of its authors have the best seller lists in mind. The purpose of this history is merely to entertain the ex-members of the Regiment, and to aid in their reminiscences, both spoken and unspoken. Colonel Edwin M. Finding Nature in Your Neighborhood: A Field Mapping Protocol for Community Based Assessment of Greenspace Access

    Get PDF
The Audubon Society of Portland and PSU Capstone students developed the Greenspace Access Point Field Mapping Protocol during the summer of 2013. The protocol was developed as a tool for a community-based approach to inventorying open space access points and to generate more accurate information on open space access in the Portland-Metro region

Charm Contribution to the Structure Function in Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering

    Get PDF
The charm contribution to the structure functions of diffractive deep inelastic scattering is considered here within the context of the Ingelman-Schlein model. Numerical estimations of this contribution are made from parametrizations of the HERA data. Influence of the Pomeron flux factor is analized as well as the effect of the shape of the initial parton distribution employed in the calculations. The obtained results indicate that the charm contribution to diffractive deep inelastic process might be large enough to be measured in the HERA experiments.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX, 6 figures, to be published in Physical Review

Impact of parental emotional support and coercive control on adolescents' self-esteem and psychological distress : results of a four-year longitudinal study

    Get PDF
This study aims at investigating the impact of parental practices on youths’ adjustment. In all, 605 adolescents completed questionnaires at ages 14, 16 and 18. Self-esteem, psychological distress as well as parental emotional support and coercive control were measured. Analyses based on individual growth models revealed that self-esteem increased with age, but psychological distress remained stable over time. Boys reported higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of psychological distress than girls. Maternal and paternal emotional support reinforced self-esteem over time. Maternal coercive control undermined self-esteem, but only at ages 16 and 18. Psychological distress decreased with parental emotional support but increased with parental coercive control at ages 14, 16 and 18. Overall, these results indicate that positive parental practices are related to youths’ well-being. These findings support the importance of establishing intervention strategies designed to promote best practices among parents of teenagers to help them develop into well-adjusted adults

Abstract Expanding the Scope of the Asymmetric Allenic Pauson–Khand Reaction Towards the Synthesis of Thapsigargin and Analogues

Thapsigargin is a potent inhibitor of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase. A prodrug of thapsigargin called mipsagargin has been investigated in clinical trials for treating several types of cancer. The ability to synthesize thapsigargin analogues would further the structure activity relationship studies of this biologically important compound. The asymmetric allenic Pauson–Khand reaction affords enantioenriched cyclopentenones in a dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation process. Herein we report the use of the asymmetric allenic Pauson–Khand reaction of furanyl tethered allene-ynes to rapidly form the carbocyclic core ring system of thapsigargin with good yields and enantioselectivities. The highest enantioselectivities observed in the asymmetric allenic Pauson–Khand reaction were with an allene-yne having a chloroacetate group. Computational results show the good enantioselectivity is due to a high activation barrier for the competing racemic background reaction. Expanding the substrate scope to include a benzene tethered allene-yne resulted in low enantioselectivities. The products of the allenic Pauson–Khand reaction were further functionalized via hydrolysis and hydrogenation reactions. The asymmetric allenic Pauson–Khand reaction of an allene-yne having a butanoyl group on the tether afforded products containing this important C8 group present in thapsigargin. The asymmetric allenic Pauson–Khand reaction is poised to be used in the synthesis of thapsigargin and thapsigargin analogues

EXPLORING EMPATHY AND SOCIAL SELF-EFFICACY IN ADOLESCENTS WITH A SIBLING WITH AN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

This exploratory pilot study investigated levels of empathy, social-self efficacy, and psychological well-being in adolescents whose siblings have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. The purpose of the study was to determine whether there is a difference in the amount of empathy and social self-efficacy adolescent siblings of children with an ASD (TD-ASD pairs) possess compared to adolescent siblings of typically developing children (TD-TD pairs). The researcher hypothesized that TD-ASD sibling pairs would have higher levels of empathy and social self-efficacy when compared to TD-TD sibling pairs. It was also hypothesized that the two sibling groups would have similar levels of overall psychological well-being. Adolescents completed self-report measures pertaining to the three dependent variables. Statistical analyses were used to make comparisons among the two groups. Results of MANOVA and independent t-tests suggest that TD-ASD and TD-TD sibling pairs have similar overall levels of empathy, social self-efficacy, and psychological well-being. Further investigation into these constructs is warranted to provide more conclusive findings regarding the relationship between having a sibling with an ASD and the effects it may have on empathy, social self-efficacy, and psychological well-being in typically-developing siblings
