    A ten-year-old European Shorthair cat was presented with complaints of progressively worsening dyspnea with open-mouth breathing and inspiratory and expiratory stridor. Histopathological examination of a biopsy, collected during tracheoscopy, revealed that the mass was an intraluminal tracheal adenocarcinoma. Computed tomography (CT) revealed no metastases and the excision of the tumor was performed during the same anesthesia. Intravenous premedication was not possible due to the behavior of the patient and induction of anesthesia was provided using intramuscular injection of alfaxalone. The maintenance of anesthesia was initially provided by inhalation of isoflurane vaporized in oxygen using a laryngeal mask and a circle rebreathing system, followed by total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with alfaxalone during the actual excision of the tumor. By removal of seven tracheal rings, the tumor could be completely removed

    International audienceThe early diagenesis of the major carrier phases (Fe and Mn minerals), trace elements (As, Co, Cr, Hg, MeHg, Ni) and nutrients (RNO 3 , NH ĂŸ 4 , RPO 4) and their exchange at the sediment water/interface were studied in the Berre Lagoon, a Mediterranean lagoon in France, at one site under two contrasting oxygen-ation conditions (strictly anoxic and slightly oxic) and at an adjacent site with perennially well-oxygen-ated water. From the concentration profiles of the primary biogeochemical constituents and trace elements of the pore and bottom waters, as well as the total and reactive particulate phases, it was possible to locate and identify the diagenetic reactions controlling the mobility of trace elements in the sediments and quantify their rates by coupling one-dimensional steady-state transport-reaction modelling and thermodynamic speciation calculations. Under oxic conditions and in the absence of benthic organisms, the main redox reactions were well identified vertically in the surface sediments and followed the theoretical sequence of oxidant consumption: O 2 > ÎŁNO 3/MnO 2 > Fe(OH) 3 > SO4 2-. However, under anoxic conditions, only MnO 2 , Fe(OH) 3 and SO 4 2- reduction were present, and they all occurred at the interface. The main biogeochemical controls on the mobility of As, Cr, Hg, MeHg and Ni in the surface sediments were identified as the adsorption/ desorption on and/or coprecipitation/codissolution with Fe oxy-hydroxides. In contrast, Co mobility was primarily controlled by its reactivity towards Mn oxy-hydroxides. In sulphidic sediments, As, Hg and MeHg were sequestered along with Fe sulphides, whereas Co and Ni precipitated directly as metallic sulphides and Cr mobility was enhanced by complexation with dissolved organic ligands. The fluxes of trace elements at the sediment–water interface are essentially dependent on the localisation of their remobilisation and immobilisation reactions under the interface, which in turn is governed by the ben-thic water oxygenation conditions and kinetic competition among those reaction and diffusion processes. Under oxic conditions, the precipitation of Fe or Mn oxy-hydroxides in the surface sediments constitutes the most efficient mechanism to sequester most of the trace elements studied, thus preventing their diffusion to the water column. Under anoxic conditions the export of trace elements to the water column is dependent on the kinetic competition during the reductive dissolution of Fe and/or Mn oxy-hydroxides, diffusion and immobilisation with sulphides. It is also shown that benthic organisms in the perennially oxygenated site have a clear impact on this general pattern. Based on the extensive dataset and geochem-ical modelling, it is predicted that the planned re-oxygenation of the entire lagoon basin, if complete, will most likely limit or reduce the export of the trace elements from the sediments to the water column and therefore, limit the impact of the contaminated sediment

    Repellent and insecticidal efficacy of a combination of dinotefuran, pyriproxyfen and permethrin (VectraÂź 3D) against Culex pipiens in dogs

    Culex pipiens is an important vector of pathogens of substantial medical and veterinary importance such as Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens or the West Nile Virus. The control of these mosquitoes is therefore essential to control the transmission of mosquito-borne agents to humans and animals. A combination of dinotefuran, permethrin and pyriproxyfen (VectraÂź 3D) has already shown its efficacy against Aedes aegypti. The aim of this study was to confirm the efficacy of this combination in repelling and killing another species of mosquito, Culex pipiens, after a single topical application to dogs. Twelve adult Beagle dogs with an equal receptivity to mosquitoes were included in the study and divided in two groups of six dogs: an untreated control group and a group treated with a combination containing 54 mg/mL dinotefuran +4.84 mg/mL pyriproxyfen +397 mg/mL permethrin (VectraÂź 3D). All dogs were challenged with 80 Culex pipiens females for 90 ± 5 min on Days - 28, 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28. The treatment was applied once topically on Day 0. Count and engorgement determination of dead and live mosquitoes were performed after each exposure to treated and untreated dogs. Compared to control dogs, the spot-on formulation provided a repellent efficacy (anti-feeding effect) against mosquitoes of 98.9%, 98.8%, 98.6%, 96.7% and 97.9% on Days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 respectively. There was a significant difference (p ≀ 0.05) between the treated and controlled groups on every assessment day. The insecticidal efficacy on treated dogs at 90 min was 34.7%, 50.3%, 39.7%, 22.8% and 11.4% on Days 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 respectively. There was a significant difference between the treated and controlled groups for live mosquitoes for all assessment days (p < 0.05). A single topical application of a combination of dinotefuran, permethrin and pyriproxyfen showed a significant repellent effect (i.e. >96%) against Culex pipiens which lasted for 28 days. The results suggest that the VectraÂź 3D spot-on solution could be used as an effective mosquito control strategy in dogs and is therefore recommended for use in a dirofilariosis prevention programme

    A first assessment of organic carbon burial in the West Gironde Mud Patch (Bay of Biscay)

    On the Bay of Biscay continental shelf, there are several mid-shelf mud patches including La Grande Vasiùre to the north, the West Gironde Mud Patch (WGMP) off the Gironde estuary and the Basque Mud Patch close to the Spanish border. In general, these deposits are several meters thick and cover coarser substrate. Questions remain about their storage capability for fine particles and carbon. This work investigates the sedimentation of the WGMP in order to develop a first estimate of organic carbon (OC) burial. Interface sediment cores were collected at nine stations along two cross-shelf transects in October–November 2016. X-radiograph imaging and grain-size analyses were used to characterize sedimentary structures. 210Pbxs depth profiles were established to calculate sediment (SAR) and mass (MAR) accumulation rates. Sedimentary structures indicate episodic sandy inputs overlying older deposits at proximal sites, and relatively continuous sedimentation at seaward locations. On the outer-central portion of the northern transect, a maximum SAR (0.47 cm yr−1) was observed, suggesting a depocenter. On the southern transect, excluding two stations where sedimentary inputs appear massive but sporadic, the SARs are lower (<0.3 cm yr−1). Quantitative estimates of OC burial rates increase seaward with a maximum of 45 gC m−2 yr−1. To evaluate carbon loading independent of grain-size variability, OC values were normalized to surface area of sediments (SA). Interestingly, a qualitative comparison of OC burial efficiencies using the OC/SA ratio highlights three groups of sites (low, medium and relatively high OC burial efficiency) which are likely related both to different sedimentary environments and variable deposition conditions linked to local environmental conditions and depth.
