A Framework for Transforming Departmental Culture to Support Educational Innovation
This paper provides a research-based framework for promoting institutional
change in higher education. To date, most educational change efforts have
focused on relatively narrow subsets of the university system (e.g., faculty
teaching practices or administrative policies) and have been largely driven by
implicit change logics; both of these features have limited the success of such
efforts at achieving sustained, systemic change. Drawing from the literature on
organizational and cultural change, our framework encourages change agents to
coordinate their activities across three key levels of the university and to
ground their activities in the various change perspectives that emerge from
that literature. We use examples from a change project that we have been
carrying out at a large research university to illustrate how our framework can

Identity and technology: Organizational control of knowledge-intensive work
Much has been written about the functioning of managerial ideologies in identity-based organizational control. However, less attention has been given to the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and identity defined by a technological discourse in regulating knowledge-intensive work. The purpose of this research is to examine the roles of identity and ICTs in the control of knowledge-intensive work. A case study of a technology service organization reveals that the construction and consumption of a technologist identity operate as organizational control, and that ICTs enable the functioning of a dialectic of technological control. This study also demonstrates the paradoxical nature of work knowledge that both empowers and controls knowledge-workers
Geology of the Victoria quadrangle (H02), Mercury
Mercuryâs quadrangle H02 âVictoriaâ is located in the planetâs northern hemisphere and lies between latitudes 22.5° N and 65° N, and between longitudes 270° E and 360° E. This quadrangle covers 6.5% of the planetâs surface with a total area of almost 5 millionâ
km2. Our 1:3,000,000-scale geologic map of the quadrangle was produced by photo-interpretation of remotely sensed orbital images captured by the MESSENGER spacecraft. Geologic contacts were drawn between 1:300,000 and 1:600,000 mapping scale and constitute the boundaries of intercrater, intermediate and smooth plains units; in addition, three morpho-stratigraphic classes of craters larger than 20â
km were mapped. The geologic map reveals that this area is dominated by Intercrater Plains encompassing some almost-coeval, probably younger, Intermediate Plains patches and interrupted to the north-west, north-east and east by the Calorian Northern Smooth Plains. This map represents the first complete geologic survey of the Victoria quadrangle at this scale, and an improvement of the existing 1:5,000,000 Mariner 10-based map, which covers only 36% of the quadrangle

Beyond dis-identification: A discursive approach to self-alienation in contemporary organizations
Dis-identification has become a key research area in organization studies, demonstrating how employees subjectively distance themselves from managerial domination by protecting/constructing their more âauthenticâ identities. But how should we understand situations where even these ârealâ selves are experienced as alien and foreign? We revise the theory of self-alienation to explain cases beyond disidentification, where even back-stage identities (âwho we really areâ) are considered something polluted, objectified and foreign. Drawing on an illustrative empirical vignette of a consultant, we demonstrate how a revised version of self-alienation might usefully capture experiences of work where the back-stage/front-stage boundary breaks down. We tentatively posit three causes of this self-alienation in relation to contemporary organizations, and discuss their significance in the context of organizational dis identification
The Vital Role of Social Workers in Community Partnerships: The Alliance for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth
The account of The Alliance for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (GLBTQ) Youth formation offers a model for developing com- munity-based partnerships. Based in a major urban area, this university-community collaboration was spearheaded by social workers who were responsible for its original conceptualization, for generating community support, and for eventual stafïŹng, administration, direct service provision, and program evaluation design. This article presents the strategic development and evolution of this community- based service partnership, highlighting the roles of schools of social work, academics, and social work students in concert with community funders, practitioners and youth, in responding to the needs of a vulnerable population
Bringing emotion to work: Emotional intelligence, resistance, and the reinvention of character
This article centrally examines the sociological significance of emotional intelligence (EI) as a nascent managerial discourse. Through developing a three-way reading of the writers Richard Sennett, Daniel Goleman, and George Ritzer, it is contended that EI can be understood to signal ânew rulesâ for work involving demands for workers to develop moral character better attuned to the dynamics of the flexible workplace - character that is more âintelligentâ, adaptive, and reflexive. Furthermore, it is argued that while EI appears in some important respects to open the scope for worker discretion, it might also signal diminished scope for worker resistance. However, ultimately, the case of EI is used to problematise recent discussions of worker resistance - to suggest the possibility of âresistantâ worker agency exercised through collusion with, as well as transgression of, corporate norms and practices

Domestic Violence and Health Care: Opening PandoraÂżs Box Âż Challenges and Dilemmas
In this article we take a critical stance toward the rational progressive narrative
surrounding the integration of domestic violence within health care. Whilst changes in
recent UK policy and practice have resulted in several tangible benefits, it is argued that
there may be hidden dilemmas and challenges. We suggest that the medical model of care
and its discursive practices position women as individually accountable for domestic
violence-related symptoms and injuries. This may not only be ineffective in terms of
service provision but could also have the potential to reduce the political significance of
domestic violence as an issue of concern for all women. Furthermore, it is argued that the
use of specific metaphors enables practitioners to distance themselves from interactions
that may prove to be less comfortable and provide less than certain outcomes. Our analysis
explores the possibilities for change that might currently be available. This would
appear to involve a consideration of alternative discourses and the reformulation of power
relations and subject positions in health care
Project management between will and representation
This article challenges some deep-rooted assumptions of project management. Inspired by the work of the German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer, it calls for looking at projects through two complementary lenses: one that accounts for cognitive and representational aspects and one that accounts for material and volitional aspects. Understanding the many ways in which these aspects transpire and interact in projects sheds new light on project organizations, as imperfect and fragile representations that chase a shifting nexus of intractable human, social, technical, and material processes.
