    Searching for Signs of Intelligent Life: An Investigation of Young Children's Beliefs About Intelligence and Animacy

    The goal of this research project is to identify the source of children's ideas about the intelligence capabilities of robots. If children's beliefs are influenced by naïve biology theories, there is likely to be a strong relationship between animacy judgments (whether an entity is alive or not) and judgments of intelligence. However, if children's beliefs are influenced by prior experience with robots, there is no reason to assume intelligence and animacy would be related; rather, degree of prior exposure to robots would influence children's beliefs about robots' intelligence capabilities. Results suggest a relationship between animacy judgments and intelligence for children with little prior exposure to robots. For children with greater exposure, there is less of a relationship between intelligence and animacy judgments. Additionally, children with greater exposure attributed more intelligence to the robots than children with little exposure. It would seem that children with little robot experience are guided by their naïve theories of biology, while children with significant robot experience use ideas gathered from their prior experiences to make judgments about the intelligence capabilities of robots

    Developing technological fluency through creative robotics

    Children have frequent access to technologies such as computers, game systems, and mobile phones (Sefton-Green, 2006). But it is useful to distinguish between engaging with technology as a 'consumer' and engaging as a 'creator' or designer (Resnick & Rusk, 1996). Children who engage as the former can use technology efficiently, while those who engage as the latter are creative and adaptive with technology. The question remains of how best to encourage movement along this continuum, towards technological fluency. This study defines three habits of mind associated with fluent technology engagement [(1) approaching technology as a tool and a creative medium, (2) understanding how to engage in a design process, and (3) seeing oneself as competent to engage in technological creativity], and examines the implementation of a learning environment designed to support them. Robot Diaries, an out-of-school workshop, encourages middle school girls to explore different ways of expressing and communicating with technology, to integrate technology with personal or fictional storytelling, and to adapt their technical knowledge to suit their own projects and ideas. Two research purposes guide this study. The first is to explore whether Robot Diaries, which blends arts and engineering curricula, can support multiple pathways to technological fluency. The second purpose is to develop and test a set of instruments to measure the development of technological fluency. Robot Diaries was implemented with a group of seven home-schooled girls between the ages of 9 and 14. Instructors from a home school enrichment program ran the workshop. The study utilized a mixed methods approach. Analysis suggests two distinct patterns of engagement in Robot Diaries are possible - an engineering focus (characterized by attention to the structure and function of the robot) and an artistic focus (characterized by attention to the robot's representational capacity). The ability to support and sustain multiple levels of participation is an important quality in a workshop designed to broaden engagement in technology exploration activities. Pre-post assessments suggest changes in confidence and (to a lesser extent) knowledge. This study has implications for the design of learning environments to support technological fluency, and for measuring this construct

    Exploring shifts in the characteristics of US government-funded science curriculum materials and their (unintended) consequences

    Grant-funded curriculum development efforts can substantially impact practice and research in science education. Therefore, understanding the sometimes-unintended consequences of changes in grant priorities is crucial. Using the case of two large funding agencies in the United States, the current portfolio review provides insight into these consequences by examining shifts in the characteristics of K-12 science curriculum materials funded during two time periods with differing funding priorities. Findings revealed a move away from comprehensive curricula, increased reliance on technology-based materials, a growing trend towards open access, but also a decrease in teacher supports. While these shifts may enhance teachers’ flexibility to shape curriculum, they also increase the challenge of ensuring curricular coherence. Recommendations are outlined for policymakers, science education researchers, and curriculum developers

    Accelerating K-12 computational thinking using scaffolding, staging, and abstraction

    We describe a three-stage model of computing instruction beginning with a simple, highly scaffolded programming en-vironment (Kodu) and progressing to more challenging frame-works (Alice and Lego NXT-G). In moving between frame-works, students explore the similarities and differences in how concepts such as variables, conditionals, and looping are realized. This can potentially lead to a deeper under-standing of programming, bringing students closer to true computational thinking. Some novel strategies for teach-ing with Kodu are outlined. Finally, we briefly report on our methodology and select preliminary results from a pi-lot study using this curriculum with students ages 10–17, including several with disabilities

    In vitro and In vivo antimycobacterial, hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activity of Euclea natalensis and its mode of action

    Ethnopharmacological relevance: The Natal gwarri or Natal ebony (Euclea natalensis A.DC.) is a deciduous tree found widespread throughout southern Africa, especially in Kwazulu-Natal and the southern cost. It has been widely used by indigenous communities such as the Zulus, Tsongas and Vendas for symptoms related to tuberculosis (TB). The decoctions made from the plant parts are administered for chest diseases to treat complications such as chest pains, bronchitis, pleurisy and asthma. TB is prevalent in immune-compromised patients and it is evident that TB-drugs cause hepatotoxicity. The objective of the present study was therefore to evaluate the antimycobacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of E. natalensis against TB and its hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activities. Materials and methods: The antimycobacterial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory activity and cytotoxicity of the ethanolic extract of the shoots of E. natalensis were determined in vitro. The mechanism of action of the antituberculosis activity was determined by investigating the inhibitory effect on mycothiol disulfide reductase enzyme. Furthermore, the acute, sub-acute toxicity (50-2000 mg/kg) and antimycobacterial effect (300 mg/kg) of E. natalensis shoot extract were investigated in Balb/c mice. Hepatoprotective activity of the extract (50-150 mg/kg) was evaluated on isoniazid and rifampicin (50 mg/kg; i.p.) induced hepatic damage in a rat model. Results: The minimum inhibitory concentration of the extract was found to be 125 µg/ml against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The extracts fifty percent inhibitory concentration (IC50) against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical was found to be 22.55 µg/ml. The plant showed a hepatoprotective effect (50% at 12.5 µg/ml) and the ability to increase T-helper 1 cell cytokines; Interleukin 12, Interleukin 2 and Interferon α by up to 12 fold and the ability to decrease the T-helper 2 cell cytokine Interleukin 10 4 fold when compared to baseline cytokine production. No cellular toxicity was observed in primary peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC's) and two secondary cell lines; U937 monocytes and Chang liver cells (a derivative of the HepG2 cell line). During mechanistic studies, the extract showed a 50% inhibition of mycothiol reductase activity at 38.62 µg/ml. During the acute and sub-acute studies, E. natalensis exhibited no toxic effect and the fifty percent lethal dose (LD50) was established to be above 2000 mg/kg. The extract was able to reduce the mycobacterial load (1.5-fold reduction) in infected mice. Isoniazid and rifampicin caused significant hepatic damage in rats, and the extract was able to reduce the toxicity by 15% and 40% at 50 and 150 mg/kg respectively. Conclusion: The present study supports the traditional usage of the plant against tuberculosis symptoms. The study showed the ability of E. natalensis shoot extract to inhibit mycobacterial growth, stimulate an appropriate immune response and have a hepatic protective effect. Due to the extract's significant results for hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory effects and antimycobacterial activity, it may prove to be effective to serve as an adjuvant for TB-patients

    The influence of curricula content on sociology students’ transformations: the case of feminist knowledge

    Previous research identifies the importance of feminist knowledge for improving gender equity, economic prosperity and social justice for all. However, there are difficulties in embedding feminist knowledge in higher education curricula. Across England, undergraduate sociology is a key site for acquiring feminist knowledge. In a study of four English sociology departments, Basil Bernstein's theoretical concepts and Madeleine Arnot's notion of gender codes frame an analysis indicating that sociology curricula in which feminist knowledge is strongly classified in separate modules is associated with more women being personally transformed. Men's engagement with feminist knowledge is low and it does not become more transformative when knowledge is strongly classified. Curriculum, pedagogy and gender codes are all possible contributors to these different relationships with feminist knowledge across the sample of 98 students

    Clinically Actionable Hypercholesterolemia and Hypertriglyceridemia in Children with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the percentage of children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in whom intervention for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or triglycerides was indicated based on National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines. STUDY DESIGN: This multicenter, longitudinal cohort study included children with NAFLD enrolled in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network. Fasting lipid profiles were obtained at diagnosis. Standardized dietary recommendations were provided. After 1 year, lipid profiles were repeated and interpreted according to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Expert Panel on Integrated Guidelines for Cardiovascular Health and Risk Reduction. Main outcomes were meeting criteria for clinically actionable dyslipidemia at baseline, and either achieving lipid goal at follow-up or meeting criteria for ongoing intervention. RESULTS: There were 585 participants, with a mean age of 12.8 years. The prevalence of children warranting intervention for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol at baseline was 14%. After 1 year of recommended dietary changes, 51% achieved goal low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, 27% qualified for enhanced dietary and lifestyle modifications, and 22% met criteria for pharmacologic intervention. Elevated triglycerides were more prevalent, with 51% meeting criteria for intervention. At 1 year, 25% achieved goal triglycerides with diet and lifestyle changes, 38% met criteria for advanced dietary modifications, and 37% qualified for antihyperlipidemic medications. CONCLUSIONS: More than one-half of children with NAFLD met intervention thresholds for dyslipidemia. Based on the burden of clinically relevant dyslipidemia, lipid screening in children with NAFLD is warranted. Clinicians caring for children with NAFLD should be familiar with lipid management
