    Neutrino tomography - Learning about the Earth's interior using the propagation of neutrinos

    Because the propagation of neutrinos is affected by the presence of Earth matter, it opens new possibilities to probe the Earth's interior. Different approaches range from techniques based upon the interaction of high energy (above TeV) neutrinos with Earth matter, to methods using the MSW effect on the neutrino oscillations of low energy (MeV to GeV) neutrinos. In principle, neutrinos from many different sources (sun, atmosphere, supernovae, beams etc.) can be used. In this talk, we summarize and compare different approaches with an emphasis on more recent developments. In addition, we point out other geophysical aspects relevant for neutrino oscillations.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures.     Dynamics of gelling liquids: a short survey

    The dynamics of randomly crosslinked liquids is addressed via a Rouse- and a Zimm-type model with crosslink statistics taken either from bond percolation or Erdoes-Renyi random graphs. While the Rouse-type model isolates the effects of the random connectivity on the dynamics of molecular clusters, the Zimm-type model also accounts for hydrodynamic interactions on a preaveraged level. The incoherent intermediate scattering function is computed in thermal equilibrium, its critical behaviour near the sol-gel transition is analysed and related to the scaling of cluster diffusion constants at the critical point. Second, non-equilibrium dynamics is studied by looking at stress relaxation in a simple shear flow. Anomalous stress relaxation and critical rheological properties are derived.     Peluang Peningkatan Tipe Terminal di Kecamatan Banyumaik (Analisis Demand dan Supply)

    Kecamatan Banyumanik merupakan kecamatan yang terus mengalami perkembangan baik dari jumlah penduduk maupun pelayanan kotanya. Kecamatan ini juga berbatasan langsung dengan kabupaten Semarang dan menjadi gerbang koridor semarang atas atau semarang bagian Selatan sehingga memiliki pergerakan yang tinggi sebagai jalur keluar masuknya kota Semarang. Pergerakan yang tinggi tersebut tidak diimbangi dengan ketersediaan fasilitas transportasi pendukung yaitu terminal. Terminal merupakan salah satu fasilitas utama yang memiliki peran penting dalam sistem transportasi. Menurut keputusan menteri nomor 35 tahun 2003 pengertian terminal adalah prasarana transportasi jalan untuk keperluan memuat dan menurunkan orang dan/atau barang serta mengatur kedatangan dan pemberangkatan kendaraan umum, yang merupakan salah satu wujud simpul jaringan transportasi. Terminal juga memiliki peran yang penting sebagai unsur tata ruang dalam kaitannya untuk meningkatkan mobilitas dan efisiensi kehidupan kota. Terminal merupakan tempat untuk mengurangi kemacetan dimana dapat mengatur lokasi pergantian moda transportasi menjadi lebih teratur. Lokasi sebuah terminal harus sesuai dengan rencana tata ruang wilayah (RTRW) dan sesuai dengan kebutuhan masyarakat Di kecamatan Banyumanik hanya memiliki sub terminal atau terminal bantu yang berfungsi sebagai tempat transit dan pergantian moda. Demand yang tinggi terhadap fasilitas transportasi tersebut tidak sebanding dengan supply fasilitas terminal yang tersedia sehingga mengakibatkan timbulnya titik-titik baru yang digunakan masyarakat untuk menunggu angkutan yaitu terminal bayangan. Terminal bayangan ini muncul karena adanya demand yang tinggi dari mayarakat banyumanik terhadap kebutuhan sarana transportasi dan efisiensi waktu. Ketidakseimbangan antara demand dan supply ini mengakibatkan berbagai dampak makro maupun mikro terhadap lalu lintas maupun jaringan angkutan di Kecamatan Banyumanik dan kota Semarang

    EXPORT: optical photometry and polarimetry of Vega-type and pre-main sequence stars

    This paper presents optical UBVRI broadband photo-polarimetry of the EXPORT sample obtained at the 2.5m Nordic Optical Telescope. The database consists of multi-epoch photo-polarimetry of 68 pre-main-sequence and main-sequence stars. An investigation of the polarization variability indicates that 22 objects are variable at the 3sigma level in our data. All these objects are pre-main sequence stars, consisting of both T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be objects while the main sequence, Vega type and post-T Tauri type objects are not variable. The polarization properties of the variable sources are mostly indicative of the UXOR-type behaviour; the objects show highest polarization when the brightness is at minimum. We add seven new objects to the class of UXOR variables (BH Cep, VX Cas, DK Tau, HK Ori, LkHa 234, KK Oph and RY Ori). The main reason for their discovery is the fact that our data-set is the largest in its kind, indicating that many more young UXOR-type pre-main sequence stars remain to be discovered. The set of Vega-like systems has been investigated for the presence of intrinsic polarization. As they lack variability, this was done using indirect methods, and apart from the known case of BD +31.643, the following stars were found to be strong candidates to exhibit polarization due to the presence of circumstellar disks: 51 Oph, BD +31.643C, HD 58647 and HD 233517.Comment: A&A accepte

    Dynamics of the circumstellar gas in the Herbig Ae stars BF Orionis, SV Cephei, WW Vulpeculae and XY Persei

    We present high resolution (lambda / Delta_lambda = 49000) echelle spectra of the intermediate mass, pre-main sequence stars BF Ori, SV Cep, WW Wul and XY Per. The spectra cover the range 3800-5900 angstroms and monitor the stars on time scales of months and days. All spectra show a large number of Balmer and metallic lines with variable blueshifted and redshifted absorption features superimposed to the photospheric stellar spectra. Synthetic Kurucz models are used to estimate rotational velocities, effective temperatures and gravities of the stars. The best photospheric models are subtracted from each observed spectrum to determine the variable absorption features due to the circumstellar gas; those features are characterized in terms of their velocity, v, dispersion velocity, Delta v, and residual absorption, R_max. The absorption components detected in each spectrum can be grouped by their similar radial velocities and are interpreted as the signature of the dynamical evolution of gaseous clumps with, in most cases, solar-like chemical composition. This infalling and outflowing gas has similar properties to the circumstellar gas observed in UX Ori, emphasizing the need for detailed theoretical models, probably in the framework of the magnetospheric accretion scenario, to understand the complex environment in Herbig Ae (HAe) stars. WW Vul is unusual because, in addition to infalling and outflowing gas with properties similar to those observed in the other stars, it shows also transient absorption features in metallic lines with no obvious counterparts in the hydrogen lines. This could, in principle, suggest the presence of CS gas clouds with enhanced metallicity around WW Vul. The existence of such a metal-rich gas component, however, needs to be confirmed by further observations and a more quantitative analysis.Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures.     Effects of mesenchymal stromal cells versus serum on tendon healing in a controlled experimental trial in an equine model

    Abstract Background Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have shown promising results in the treatment of tendinopathy in equine medicine, making this therapeutic approach seem favorable for translation to human medicine. Having demonstrated that MSC engraft within the tendon lesions after local injection in an equine model, we hypothesized that they would improve tendon healing superior to serum injection alone. Methods Quadrilateral tendon lesions were induced in six horses by mechanical tissue disruption combined with collagenase application 3 weeks before treatment. Adipose-derived MSC suspended in serum or serum alone were then injected intralesionally. Clinical examinations, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging were performed over 24 weeks. Tendon biopsies for histological assessment were taken from the hindlimbs 3 weeks after treatment. Horses were sacrificed after 24 weeks and forelimb tendons were subjected to macroscopic and histological examination as well as analysis of musculoskeletal marker expression. Results Tendons injected with MSC showed a transient increase in inflammation and lesion size, as indicated by clinical and imaging parameters between week 3 and 6 (p < 0.05). Thereafter, symptoms decreased in both groups and, except that in MSC-treated tendons, mean lesion signal intensity as seen in T2w magnetic resonance imaging and cellularity as seen in the histology (p < 0.05) were lower, no major differences could be found at week 24. Conclusions These data suggest that MSC have influenced the inflammatory reaction in a way not described in tendinopathy studies before. However, at the endpoint of the current study, 24 weeks after treatment, no distinct improvement was observed in MSC-treated tendons compared to the serum-injected controls. Future studies are necessary to elucidate whether and under which conditions MSC are beneficial for tendon healing before translation into human medicine

    Proposal of an extended t-J Hamiltonian for high-Tc cuprates from ab initio calculations on embedded clusters

    A series of accurate ab initio calculations on Cu_pO-q finite clusters, properly embedded on the Madelung potential of the infinite lattice, have been performed in order to determine the local effective interactions in the CuO_2 planes of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 compounds. The values of the first-neighbor interactions, magnetic coupling (J_{NN}=125 meV) and hopping integral (t_{NN}=-555 meV), have been confirmed. Important additional effects are evidenced, concerning essentially the second-neighbor hopping integral t_{NNN}=+110meV, the displacement of a singlet toward an adjacent colinear hole, h_{SD}^{abc}=-80 meV, a non-negligible hole-hole repulsion V_{NN}-V_{NNN}=0.8 eV and a strong anisotropic effect of the presence of an adjacent hole on the values of the first-neighbor interactions. The dependence of J_{NN} and t_{NN} on the position of neighbor hole(s) has been rationalized from the two-band model and checked from a series of additional ab initio calculations. An extended t-J model Hamiltonian has been proposed on the basis of these results. It is argued that the here-proposed three-body effects may play a role in the charge/spin separation observed in these compounds, that is, in the formation and dynamic of stripes.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.     Dynamics of Wetting Fronts in Porous Media

    We propose a new phenomenological approach for describing the dynamics of wetting front propagation in porous media. Unlike traditional models, the proposed approach is based on dynamic nature of the relation between capillary pressure and medium saturation. We choose a modified phase-field model of solidification as a particular case of such dynamic relation. We show that in the traveling wave regime the results obtained from our approach reproduce those derived from the standard model of flow in porous media.     A minimal Beta Beam with high-Q ions to address CP violation in the leptonic sector

    In this paper we consider a Beta Beam setup that tries to leverage at most existing European facilities: i.e. a setup that takes advantage of facilities at CERN to boost high-Q ions (8Li and 8B) aiming at a far detector located at L = 732 Km in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. The average neutrino energy for 8Li and 8B ions boosted at \gamma ~ 100 is in the range E_\nu = [1,2] GeV, high enough to use a large iron detector of the MINOS type at the far site. We perform, then, a study of the neutrino and antineutrino fluxes needed to measure a CP-violating phase delta in a significant part of the parameter space. In particular, for theta_13 > 3 deg, if an antineutrino flux of 3 10^19 useful 8Li decays per year is achievable, we find that delta can be measured in 60% of the parameter space with 6 10^18 useful 8B decays per year.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, added references and corrected typo
