Thermodynamics on the spectra of random matrices
We show that the spectra of Wishart matrices built from magnetization time
series can describe the phase transitions and the critical phenomena of the
Potts model with a different number of states. We can statistically determine
the transition points, independent of their order, by studying the density of
the eigenvalues and corresponding fluctuations. In some way, we establish a
relationship between the actual thermodynamics with the spectral thermodynamics
described by the eigenvalues. The histogram of correlations between time series
interestingly supports our results. In addition, we present an analogy to the
study of the spectral properties of the Potts model, considering matrices
correlated artificially. For such matrices, the eigenvalues are distributed in
two groups that present a gap depending on such correlation.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Contribution of the solar systems to the nZEB and ZEB design concept in Portugal: energy, economics and environmental life-cycle analysis
The recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive settle that by 2020 all new buildings should reach nearly zero energy levels (2018 for buildings owned or occupied by public authorities). Therefore, technicians involved in the design, management and approval of buildings should be able to understand and apply nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB) concepts in both new buildings and refurbishment of existing ones. At European Union (EU) level there are differences in commitment to the EU targets and the construction of nZEB. Therefore, it is necessary to develop studies that demonstrate the advantages of the nZEB and ZEB design process that can increase the awareness of both building clients and other stakeholders regarding this issue. In this context, the aim of this paper is to assess the energy and environmental life-cycle performance of different renovation scenarios (Basic Renovation, nZEB and ZEB) for multifamily buildings in Portugal. This will be focused on the goals of the nZEB and ZEB design process and on the contribution of solar systems (both solar thermal collectors, STCs, and photovoltaic panels, PVs) to the achievement of those goals. The results presented in this paper show that, in the Portuguese climate and for a typical multi-family building, it is possible to overcome 100% of the energy needs for acclimatization and domestic hot water (DHW) preparation with the integration of solar systems. From the results, it is also possible to conclude that a significant amount of energy and carbon emissions are avoided for every renovation scenario during the considered lifetime (30 years) and that the nZEB and ZEB scenarios are cost-effective with attractive payback times.IEE Project SouthZEB (under the reference IEE/13/393)Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Projects UID/ECI/04047/2013 and UID/FIS/04650/201
Mean-field criticality explained by random matrices theory
How a system initially at infinite temperature responds when suddenly placed
at finite temperatures is a way to check the existence of phase transitions. It
has been shown in [R. da Silva, IJMPC 2023] that phase transitions are
imprinted in the spectra of matrices built from time evolutions of
magnetization of spin models. In this paper, we show that this method works
very accurately in determining the critical temperature in the mean-field Ising
model. We show that for Glauber or Metropolis dynamics, the average eigenvalue
has a minimum at the critical temperature, which is corroborated by an
inflection at eigenvalue dispersion at this same point. Such transition is
governed by a gap in the density of eigenvalues similar to short-range spin
systems. We conclude that the thermodynamics of this mean-field system can be
described by the fluctuations in the spectra of Wishart matrices which suggests
a direct relationship between thermodynamic fluctuations and spectral
fluctuations.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Short chain U(600) di-urea cross-linked poly(oxyethylene)/siloxane ormolytes doped with lanthanum triflate salt
Promising La3+-doped electrolytes based on a hybrid poly(oxyethylene)/siliceous host matrix, U(600), have been produced. The organic and inorganic components of the hybrid structure are covalently bonded through urea linkages. The low molecular weight of the polyether segments of U(600) is thought to be responsible for the total amorphous character and high conductivity at room temperature (1.1×10−4 S cm−1) of these ormolytes.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Morphological and conductivity studies of di-ureasil xerogels containing lithium triflate
Sol–gel derived poly(oxyethylene)/siloxane hybrids doped with lithium triflate, LiCF3SO3, have been investigated. The host hybrid matrix of these materials, named di-ureasil and represented by U(600), is composed by a siliceous framework to which polyether chains containing 8.5 oxyethylene repeat units are covalently bonded through urea linkages. Xerogel samples U(600)nLiCF3SO3 with n (where n is the molar ratio of oxyethylene moieties per Li+ ion) between ∞ and 0.1 have been examined. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry have provided conclusive evidence that the xerogels analyzed are entirely amorphous. The salt-rich material with n=1 exhibits the highest conductivity over the whole range of temperature analyzed (e.g. 4.3×10−6 and 2.0×10−4 Ω−1 cm−1, respectively, at 25 and 94 °C).Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Cytogenetic studies of Brazilian pediatric myelodysplastic syndrome cases: challenges and difficulties in a large and emerging country
Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) are rare hematopoietic stem cell diseases affecting children. Cytogenetics plays an important role in the diagnosis of these diseases. We report here the experience of the Cytogenetic Subcommittee of the Brazilian Cooperative Group on Pediatric Myelodysplastic Syndromes (BCG-MDS-PED). We analyzed 168 cytogenetic studies performed in 23 different cytogenetic centers; 84 of these studies were performed in patients with confirmed MDS (primary MDS, secondary MDS, JMML, and acute myeloid leukemia/MDS+Down syndrome). Clonal abnormalities were found in 36.9% of the MDS cases and cytogenetic studies were important for the detection of constitutional diseases and for differential diagnosis with other myeloid neoplasms. These data show the importance of the Cooperative Group for continuing education in order to avoid a late or wrong diagnosis.Univ São Paulo, Fac Med, Dept Hematol, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Hematol, São Paulo, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Fac Med, Dept Hematol, Lab Citogenet, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Inst Oncol Pediat, São Paulo, BrazilUniv Estadual Paulista, Fac Med Botucatu, Dept Clin Med, Botucatu, SP, BrazilHosp Canc Barretos, Barretos, SP, BrazilCtr Tratamento Fabiana Macedo de Morais, Grp Assistencia Crianca Canc, Grp Cooperat Brasileiro Sindrome Mielodisplas Ped, Sao Jose Dos Campos, SP, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Hematol, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Inst Oncol Pediat, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

Short-chain di-ureasil ormolytes doped with potassium triflate: Phase diagram and conductivity behavior
Di-urea cross-linked poly(oxyethylene)/siloxane hybrids, synthesized by the sol-gel process and containing a wide concentration range of potassium triflate, KCF3SO3, have been analyzed by x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The pseudo-phase diagram proposed has been taken into account in the interpretation of the complex impedance measurements. The xerogels prepared are obtained as transparent, thin monoliths . At room temperature the highest conductivity found was 2 x 10-6Scm-1.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Depicting the battle between nectarine and Monilinia laxa: the fruit developmental stage dictates the effectiveness of the host defenses and the pathogen’s infection strategies
Infections by the fungus Monilinia laxa, the main cause of brown rot in Europe, result in considerable losses of stone
fruit. Herein, we present a comprehensive transcriptomic approach to unravel strategies deployed by nectarine fruit
and M. laxa during their interaction. We used M. laxa-inoculated immature and mature fruit, which was resistant and
susceptible to brown rot, respectively, to perform a dual RNA-Seq analysis. In immature fruit, host responses, pathogen
biomass, and pathogen transcriptional activity peaked at 14–24 h post inoculation (hpi), at which point M. laxa
appeared to switch its transcriptional response to either quiescence or death. Mature fruit experienced an exponential
increase in host and pathogen activity beginning at 6 hpi. Functional analyses in both host and pathogen highlighted
differences in stage-dependent strategies. For example, in immature fruit, M. laxa unsuccessfully employed
carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) for penetration, which the fruit was able to combat with tightly regulated
hormone responses and an oxidative burst that challenged the pathogen’s survival at later time points. In contrast, in
mature fruit, M. laxa was more dependent on proteolytic effectors than CAZymes, and was able to invest in
filamentous growth early during the interaction. Hormone analyses of mature fruit infected with M. laxa indicated that,
while jasmonic acid activity was likely useful for defense, high ethylene activity may have promoted susceptibility
through the induction of ripening processes. Lastly, we identified M. laxa genes that were highly induced in both
quiescent and active infections and may serve as targets for control of brown rot.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
