    Biodegradability of diesel and biodiesel blends

    The biodegradability of pure diesel and biodiesel and blends with different proportions of biodiesel (2%(commercial); 5% and 20%) was evaluated employing the respirometric method and the redox indicator2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol (DCPIP) test. In the former, experiments simulating the contamination of natural environments (soil from a petrol station or water from a river) were carried out in Bartha biometer flasks (250 ml), and used to measure the microbial CO2 production. With the DCPIP test, the capability of three inocula to biodegrade the blends was tested. Results show that although biodiesel is more easily and faster biodegraded than diesel oil, among the blends evaluated (2%, 5% and 20%), only the blend with higher concentration of biodiesel presented biodegradability significantly different from diesel and it was not verified an improvement on the biodegradation of the diesel by means of  cometabolism

    Brazil’s more doctors programme and infant health outcomes: a longitudinal analysis

    Background Providing sufficient numbers of human resources for health is essential for effective and accessible health services. Between 2013 and 2018, the Brazilian Ministry of Health implemented the Programa Mais Médicos (PMM) (More Doctors Programme) to increase the supply of primary care doctors in underserved areas of the country. This study investigated the association between PMM and infant health outcomes and assessed if heterogeneity in the impact of PMM varied by municipal socioeconomic factors and health indicators. Methods An ecological longitudinal (panel) study design was employed to analyse data from 5,565 Brazilian municipalities over a 12-year period between 2007 and 2018. A differences-in-differences approach was implemented using longitudinal fixed effect regression models to compare infant health outcomes in municipalities receiving a PMM doctor with those that did not receive a PMM doctor. The impact of PMM was assessed on aggregate and in municipality subgroups. Results On aggregate, the PMM was not significantly associated with changes in infant or neonatal mortality, but the PMM was associated with reductions in IMR (of -0.21; 95% CI: -0.38,-0.03) in municipalities with highest IMR prior to the programme’s implementation (where IMR >25.2 infant deaths per 1,000 live births). The PMM was also associated with an increase in the proportion of expectant mothers receiving seven or more prenatal care visits but only in municipalities with a lower IMR at baseline and high density of non-PMM doctors and community health workers before the PMM. Conclusions The PMM was associated with reduced infant mortality in municipalities with the highest infant mortality rate prior to the programme. This suggests effectiveness of the PMM was limited only to the areas of greatest need. New programmes to improve the equitable provision of human resources for health should employ comprehensive targeting approaches balancing health needs and socioeconomic factors to maximize effectiveness

    Phylogenetic inferences of Atelinae (Platyrrhini) based on multi-directional chromosome painting in Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles b. marginatus

    We performed multi-directional chromosome painting in a comparative cytogenetic study of the three Atelinae species Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles belzebuth marginatus, in order to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships within this Platyrrhini subfamily. Comparative chromosome maps between these species were established by multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) employing human, Saguinus oedipus and Lagothrix lagothricha chromosome-specific probes. The three species included in this study and four previously analyzed species from all four Atelinae genera were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis on the basis of a data matrix comprised of 82 discrete chromosome characters. The results confirmed that Atelinae represent a monophyletic clade with a putative ancestral karyotype of 2n = 62 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed an evolutionary branching sequence \{Alouatta \{Brachyteles \{Lagothrix and Ateles\}\}\} in Atelinae and \{Ateles belzebuth marginatus \{Ateles paniscus paniscus \{Ateles belzebuth hybridus and Ateles geoffroyi\}\}\} in genus Ateles.     Economic impact of treatment for surgical site infections in cases of total knee arthroplasty in a tertiary public hospital in Brazil

    The aim of this study was to estimate the additional cost of treatment of a group of nosocomial infections in a tertiary public hospital. A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted by means of analyzing the medical records of 34 patients with infection after total knee arthroplasty, diagnosed in 2006 and 2007, who met the criteria for nosocomial infection according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To estimate the direct costs of treatment for these patients, the following data were gathered: length of hospital stay, laboratory tests, imaging examinations, and surgical procedures performed. Their costs were estimated from the minimum values according to the Brazilian Medical Association. The estimated cost of the antibiotics used was also obtained. The total length of stay in the ward was 976 days, at a cost of US18,994.63,and,intheintensivecareunit,itwas34daysatacostofUS 18,994.63, and, in the intensive care unit, it was 34 days at a cost of US 5,031.37. Forty-two debridement procedures were performed, at a cost of US5,798.06,and1965tests(laboratoryandimaging)werealsoperformed,atacostofUS 5,798.06, and 1965 tests (laboratory and imaging) were also performed, at a cost of US 15,359.25. US20,845.01wasspentonantibioticsandUS 20,845.01 was spent on antibiotics and US 1,735.16 on vacuum assisted closure therapy, microsurgical flaps, implant removal, spacer use, and surgical revision. The total additional cost of these cases of hospital infection in 2006 and 2007 was of US$ 91,843.75. Based on that, we demonstrate that the high cost of treatment for hospital infections emphasizes the importance of taking measures to prevent and control hospital infection

    Enhancement of nematic order and global phase diagram of a lattice model for coupled nematic systems

    We use an infinite-range Maier-Saupe model, with two sets of local quadrupolar variables and restricted orientations, to investigate the global phase diagram of a coupled system of two nematic subsystems. The free energy and the equations of state are exactly calculated by standard techniques of statistical mechanics. The nematic-isotropic transition temperature of system A increases with both the interaction energy among mesogens of system B, and the two-subsystem coupling JJ. This enhancement of the nematic phase is manifested in a global phase diagram in terms of the interaction parameters and the temperature TT. We make some comments on the connections of these results with experimental findings for a system of diluted ferroelectric nanoparticles embedded in a nematic liquid-crystalline environment.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Volume 42 of the Brazilian Journal of Physic

    In Vitro Evaluation of the Antiviral Potential of Guettarda angelica Against Animal Herpesviruses

    Background: The number of antiviral studies using plant extracts has increased in the last decades, and the results have shown that plants are potential sources of compounds that are able to inhibit and/or decrease viral infections. The selection of these plants by ethnopharmacological criteria increases the probability of finding new substances with significant pharmacological and biological activities. Hence, Brazil has an advantage in this area due to its extensive biodiversity and ethnological diversity. Guettarda angelica is a plant from the Brazilian Caatinga region the roots of which are popularly used for various therapeutic purposes, including veterinary use. The aim of this work was to investigate the in vitro antiviral activity of extracts of plant parts from G. angelica against three animal herpesviruses: bovine (BoHV-1), suid (SuHV-1) and equine (EHV-1) herpesviruses type 1. Materials, Methods & Results: The extracts of roots, leaves and seeds of G. angelica were initially screened for in vitro antiviral activity against these herpesviruses using the virus yield reduction assay. The MDBK cells were used in assays with BoHV-1 and SuHV-1, and the Vero cells with EHV-1. For these assays, the cells previously treated with the extracts in non-cytotoxic concentrations were inoculated with logarithmic dilutions of each virus, The viral inhibitory activity of extracts was calculated by difference of virus titer between treated infected cells and non-treated infected cells. Only the aqueous extract from seeds (AEs) showed a significant antiviral activity (P < 0.01, ANOVA followed by Tukey test) against all herpesviruses leading continuous studies, Thus, the selectivity index (SI) of this extract was determined by MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] colorimetric assay by calculating the ratio CC(50)over IC50. The 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) was defined as the extract concentration that reduced the cell viability by 50% when compared to untreated controls; the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) was defined as the concentration of the extract that inhibited 50% of viral replication when compared to the virus control. The CC50 and IC50 obtained from nonlinear regression analysis of concentration-effect curves by the GraphPad Prism 5 Demo program and represented the means +/- standard deviation of three independent experiments. The CC5(0) for Vero cells was 400.60 +/- 0.20 mu g/mL, while the CC50 for MDBK cells was 920.50 +/- 0.19 mu g/mL. The IC50 values of the AEs on the BoHV-1, SuHV-1 and EHV-1 were 22.79 mu g/mL, 91.30 mu g/mL and 19.95 mu g/mL, respectively. The SI values of this extract for each virus obtained from these data were 40.39, 10.08 and 20.08 for BoHV-1, SuHV-1, and EHV-1, respectively. Discussion: To ensure the antiviral activity of a plant extract and consequently its future use as antiviral agent is crucial the obtainment of its selectivity index or safety index. It is guarantee of a true antiviral effect and not the result of cytotoxicity of the extract on cells, and that could be confused with an antiviral activity. Other important point are the extract IC50 values less than 100 mu g/mL. The results of the AEs of G. angelica are in accordance with these considerations indicating that the Go angelica seeds may be a potential source of antiviral compounds insurance and encouraging further investigation of them.40

    Sialic Acid Glycobiology Unveils Trypanosoma cruzi Trypomastigote Membrane Physiology.

    Trypanosoma cruzi, the flagellate protozoan agent of Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis, is unable to synthesize sialic acids de novo. Mucins and trans-sialidase (TS) are substrate and enzyme, respectively, of the glycobiological system that scavenges sialic acid from the host in a crucial interplay for T. cruzi life cycle. The acquisition of the sialyl residue allows the parasite to avoid lysis by serum factors and to interact with the host cell. A major drawback to studying the sialylation kinetics and turnover of the trypomastigote glycoconjugates is the difficulty to identify and follow the recently acquired sialyl residues. To tackle this issue, we followed an unnatural sugar approach as bioorthogonal chemical reporters, where the use of azidosialyl residues allowed identifying the acquired sugar. Advanced microscopy techniques, together with biochemical methods, were used to study the trypomastigote membrane from its glycobiological perspective. Main sialyl acceptors were identified as mucins by biochemical procedures and protein markers. Together with determining their shedding and turnover rates, we also report that several membrane proteins, including TS and its substrates, both glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins, are separately distributed on parasite surface and contained in different and highly stable membrane microdomains. Notably, labeling for α(1,3)Galactosyl residues only partially colocalize with sialylated mucins, indicating that two species of glycosylated mucins do exist, which are segregated at the parasite surface. Moreover, sialylated mucins were included in lipid-raft-domains, whereas TS molecules are not. The location of the surface-anchored TS resulted too far off as to be capable to sialylate mucins, a role played by the shed TS instead. Phosphatidylinositol-phospholipase-C activity is actually not present in trypomastigotes. Therefore, shedding of TS occurs via microvesicles instead of as a fully soluble form
