PtSi Clustering In Silicon Probed by Transport Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Metal silicides formed by means of thermal annealing processes are employed as contact materials in microelectronics. Control of the structure of silicide/silicon interfaces becomes a critical issue when the device characteristic size is reduced below a few tens of nanometers. Here we report on silicide clustering occurring within the channel of PtSi/Si/PtSi Schottky barrier transistors. This phenomenon is investigated through atomistic simulations and low-temperature resonant tunneling spectroscopy. Our results provide evidence for the segregation of a PtSi cluster with a diameter of a few nanometers from the silicide contact. The cluster acts as metallic quantum dot giving rise to distinct signatures of quantum transport through its discrete energy states

The Mediating Role of Romantic Attachment in the Relationship Between Attachment to Parents and Aggression

Background: A secure attachment style could promote more intimacy in romantic relationships, while an insecure attachment style could be correlated with less positive romantic relationships in adulthood. Numerous studies have noted that a secure attachment to parents was correlated with lower levels of aggression, whereas insecure attachments were associated with higher levels of aggression. We aimed to investigate the role of the attachment system as a mediator of the expression of aggressiveness during adolescence. Specifically, we considered that the attachment to parents and peers could influence one's attachment to a romantic partner. Methods: We empirically tested whether there were relationships of parent and peer attachment on aggressiveness mediated by romantic attachment style. Participants of the study included 411 students. Results: Results indicated that for males an insecure father-child attachment style seems to be associated with higher levels of anxiety and avoidance in romantic attachments and then with aggressiveness. For females, an insecure mother-child attachment style seems to be associated with higher levels of aggressiveness. Conclusion: The attachment to parents and to peers plays a key role in defining romantic attachment according to gender, and these dimensions in turn tend to affect the levels of aggressiveness

When Rey-Osterrieth's Complex Figure Becomes a Church: Prevalence and Correlates of Graphic Confabulations in Dementia

Verbal confabulation (VC) has been described in several pathological conditions characterized by amnesia and has been defined as ‘statements that involve distortion of memories’. Here we describe another kind of confabulation (graphic confabulation, GC), evident at the recall of the Rey-Osterrieth complex figure (ROCF). In a retrospective study of 267 patients with mild-to-moderate dementia, 14 patients (4.9 %) recalled the abstract ROCF as drawings with recognizable semantic meaning. VC was evident at the story recall test in 19.8% of the study participants. VC and GC were homogeneously distributed among the different types of dementia. VC has been proposed to originate from complex interactions of amnesia, motivational deficit and dysfunction of monitoring systems. On the contrary, GC seems to be the result of a deficit in visual memory replaced by the semantic translation of isolated parts of the ROCF along with a source monitoring deficit

Fonderia Caratteri Nebiolo, 1878–1978. Nuovi studi critici

    Get PDF

Non-invasive assessment of gastric secretory function in centenarians

Gastric acid secretion is believed to decrease in the aging stomach, but the number of elderly patients on proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy is increasing. The aim was to assess gastric function by means of serology (PGI, PGII, G17 and IgG antibodies against Helicobacter pylori) in centenarians. Twenty-five centenarians (2 males, 23 females, mean age 101.3 years, range 100- 106 years) underwent to serological gastric markers assessment by means of Gastropanel®. Patients with laboratory signs of severe oxyntic gastric atrophy (OGA) underwent gastroscopy with biopsy samples. Twelve patients (48.0%) had serological values according to normal gastric secretion; 3 patients (12%) had serological values according to severe OGA, confirmed by histology; 21 patients (84.0%) had serological values according to H. pylori infection. Acid secretion seems to be preserved in a large part of centenarians. Serological markers may be helpful to identify patients affected by OGA, in whom the administration of PPI is inappropriate

Rapid clinical management of leishmaniasis in emergency department: a case report with clinical review of recent literature

Systemic or localized lympho-adenomegaly is a common cause of access to the emergency department (ED), and differential diagnosis is often complicated. The combination of anamnesis, physical examination, laboratory tests, and instrumental diagnosis are extremely important to orientate toward a rapid and correct therapy, even if a prompt discrimination of the etiology of this lymphadenomegaly is not often possible. Our aim with this review is to improve the management of a dierential diagnosis between hematological and infective diseases as leishmaniasis in ED and suggest quick diagnostic techniques that might be useful for early identification. Together in the review, we describe a case report of a young man aected from visceral leishmaniasis who presented to our ED and was incorrectly addressed to the wrong ward for the study of his condition. Subsequently, we focus on the clinical presentation of visceral leishmaniasis and compare it to the most common dierential diagnoses that are usually taken into account in the management of such patients

Joule-assisted silicidation for short-channel silicon nanowire devices

We report on a technique enabling electrical control of the contact silicidation process in silicon nanowire devices. Undoped silicon nanowires were contacted by pairs of nickel electrodes and each contact was selectively silicided by means of the Joule effect. By a realtime monitoring of the nanowire electrical resistance during the contact silicidation process we were able to fabricate nickel-silicide/silicon/nickel- silicide devices with controlled silicon channel length down to 8 nm.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
