Ranking irrigation schemes based on principle component analysis in the arid regions of Turkey
ArticleWater is a scarce resource and thus irrigation schemes in arid regions have become
more important. The irrigation sector which uses most of the water resources has to cope with
global warming, disasters and water scarcity around the world, particularly in the Mediterranean
countries, including Turkey. Irrigation schemes, which were built by DSI (State Hydraulic
Works) and whose operation and maintenance management was transferred to water user
associations, play a crucial role in irrigated agriculture in Turkey. In order to improve the
performance, weakness and strengths of irrigation schemes are determined by performance
indicators (system operation, financial and production efficiency) which show the overall
information about them. In the present study, seven irrigation schemes located in an arid region
of central Anatolia were chosen to assess the irrigation performance using principal component,
correlation and cluster analysis while quality index showed the rank of the irrigation schemes.
We found that the average total annual volume of irrigation supply was 7648.58 m3 ha−1
and the
average relative water supply was 1.91 during the 11 years between 2006 and 2016. In this region,
higher inverse correlations were due to using surface irrigation methods (51.3%). As of 2017, the
irrigation schemes have weak water distribution systems, on an average, consisting of 55.5% open
canals, 22.5% canalette and only 10% pipes. According to the quality index, financial and system
operation indicators are more effective than that of production efficiency indicators. In
conclusion, average irrigation ratio (55.68%) can be increased by improving the water
distribution system, and the technology used on both management and farm levels
Finding least fragmented holdings with factor analysis and a new methodology: a case study of kargılı land consolidation project from Turkey
ArticleLand fragmentation (LF) is a problem
restrain agricultural activities and decrease
mechanization level, production. Land
consolidation (LC) projects are done in the World
as well as Turkey to solve LF issues. Researchers
created indicators to measure land fragmentation
which is important to see success level of LC
projects. The use of these indicators is
controversial or not accurate. The core aim of the
present study is to find new land fragmentation
index and to find least fragmented holding with
factor analysis using the other indicators which
are Simmons, Januszevski, number of parcels,
Shmook and Igbozurike besides new land
fragmentation index. Kargılı Village land
consolidation project in Mersin, Turkey was
chosen as a material. Cadastral data before land
consolidation, was used to calculate value of
indicators, where number of parcels was 932,
total area was 1,741.9 ha, the average parcel size
was 1.9 ha, number of holdings was 542 and the
average parcel size was village had 932 parcels.
Data processing were performed with ArcMAP
10.6.1 and SPSS. A total of 18 holdings were
identified randomly as sample size which were sufficient to carry out factor analysis including
principle component to rank holdings (P < 0.01).As a result, new land fragmentation index found
correlated with others (P < 0.01) and ranking according to new indicator performed better than
ranking considering all indicators. In this context, it is possible to use new land fragmentation
indicator to determine priority areas for land consolidation
Mapping performance of irrigation schemes in Turkey
Water is a crucial resource and approximately 70% usage of it in the agriculture sector
in Turkey. Water user associations are in charge of irrigation water management. The core aim
of this study is to assess water user associations have command area more than 1,000 ha (WUAs)
within the districts of DSI (State Hydraulic Works) and to create spatial maps to show the
distribution of the performance indicators used constantly by researchers especially around
Mediterranean countries during the period from 2011 to 2015. Frequency and panel data analysis
are used to figure out the relationship among performance indicators and attributes such as water
diversion type, management type, source of water and district no. Panel data analysis was applied
to examine statistical assessment over time. As a result, current performance indicators show that
excessive irrigation water used due to low technology and management problem. Performance
indicators show high differences among districts due to climate, water resources, and crop pattern.
Moreover, low irrigation efficiency can be increased with a transition to pressurized irrigation
systems, so more are can be irrigated with less water
Absolute properties of the binary system BB Pegasi
We present a ground based photometry of the low-temperature contact binary BB
Peg. We collected all times of mid-eclipses available in literature and
combined them with those obtained in this study. Analyses of the data indicate
a period increase of 3.0(1) x 10^{-8} days/yr. This period increase of BB Peg
can be interpreted in terms of the mass transfer 2.4 x 10^{-8} Ms yr^{-1} from
the less massive to the more massive component. The physical parameters have
been determined as Mc = 1.42 Ms, Mh = 0.53 Ms, Rc = 1.29 Rs, Rh = 0.83 Rs, Lc =
1.86 Ls, and Lh = 0.94 Ls through simultaneous solution of light and of the
radial velocity curves. The orbital parameters of the third body, that orbits
the contact system in an eccentric orbit, were obtained from the period
variation analysis. The system is compared to the similar binaries in the
Hertzsprung-Russell and Mass-Radius diagram.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for Astronomical Journa
Globe-LFMC 2.0, an enhanced and updated dataset for live fuel moisture content research
Globe-LFMC 2.0, an updated version of Globe-LFMC, is a comprehensive dataset of over 280,000 Live Fuel Moisture Content (LFMC) measurements. These measurements were gathered through field campaigns conducted in 15 countries spanning 47 years. In contrast to its prior version, Globe-LFMC 2.0 incorporates over 120,000 additional data entries, introduces more than 800 new sampling sites, and comprises LFMC values obtained from samples collected until the calendar year 2023. Each entry within the dataset provides essential information, including date, geographical coordinates, plant species, functional type, and, where available, topographical details. Moreover, the dataset encompasses insights into the sampling and weighing procedures, as well as information about land cover type and meteorological conditions at the time and location of each sampling event. Globe-LFMC 2.0 can facilitate advanced LFMC research, supporting studies on wildfire behaviour, physiological traits, ecological dynamics, and land surface modelling, whether remote sensing-based or otherwise. This dataset represents a valuable resource for researchers exploring the diverse LFMC aspects, contributing to the broader field of environmental and ecological research

Habituation of auditory event-related potentials in patients with Behcet's disease
kavak, ayse/0000-0002-4679-1181WOS: 000225978500003PubMed: 15624083Behcet's disease is a progressive and/or relapsing-remitting multisystem inflammatory disorder. Involvement of the central nervous system occurs in 10%-29% of cases with Behcet's disease. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of repetitive auditory stimulations on event-related potentials (ERP) in patients with Behcet's without neurologic manifestations. The study was performed in 14 patients with Behcet's disease and 14 healthy volunteers. ERPs were recorded from Fz, Cz and Pz. The auditory ERPs test was continued until 20 artefact-free rare tones were averaged, which was accepted as one trial block. After six blocks were obtained in a sequential manner, the test was completed. According to the results of the present study, P300 latency changed in different manners over trial blocks in the two groups. P300 latency values showed a progressive increase in the controls; however this was not determined in the Behcet's group. Thus, habituation was not observed in the patient group. Because of the lack of habituation related to P300 latency, it may be thought that there is an insidious pathologic process in Behcet's disease without neurologic manifestation
The preventive effect of oxytocin on retinopathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats
PubMed ID: 31055890Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of intravitreal and intraperitoneal use of oxytocin (OT) on retinopathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four 6–8-week-old adult male and female Sprague Dawley rats were used in the study. Diabetes was induced in the rats with a single injection of intraperitoneal streptozotocin. Diabetes was verified after 48 hours by measuring blood glucose levels of 260 mg/dl (14.4 mmol/L) or higher in diabetic rats. The rats were divided into 4 groups and treated as follows: intravitreal physiological saline group (0.01 mL saline weekly), intravitreal OT group (10 µU/µL OT weekly), intraperitoneal physiological saline group (1 mL daily), and intraperitoneal OT group (100 IU/kg OT daily). Hamilton syringes fitted with 27-gauge needles were used for intraperitoneal injections while 31-gauge needles were used for intravitreal injection. After 4 weeks of treatment the rats were euthanized to evaluate outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) immunoexpression, and plasma VEGF levels from blood samples obtained by cardiac puncture. Results: Morphometric analysis of retinal cross-sections showed that intravitreal and intraperitoneal OT significantly increased ONL thickness compared to physiological saline-treated groups. Also, OT treatment significantly decreased VEGF protein expression compared with the physiological saline groups. Plasma VEGF level was significantly higher in the physiological saline treatment group compared to the OT treatment group. Conclusion: OT reduces diabetic retinopathy progression, particularly when administered intravitreally. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to investigate the impact of OT on diabetic retinopathy and may provide a new area for further research © 2019 by Turkish Ophthalmological Associatio
