    A Comparison of the bacterial flora of surface and sub-surface water of the sea off Ceylon

    Under stable conditions of stratification of the sea, evidence of generic differences of the associated bacterial flora of the water masses has been obtained, between surface and sub-surface water. Gram negative rods, especially pseudomonads and achromobacters were more frequent at the surface. The fermentative and oxidase negative flora was more frequent in sub-surface water. The surface water in general had a greater variety of bacterial types while the sub-surface water had a flora with a greater range of biochemical activity. These results are discussed in relation to the hydrological condition of the water masses and the bacterial flora of freshly caught fish

    Survival of Staphylococci on frozen fish

    Using Staphylococcus aureus as the test culture it has been shown that cell injury occurs in two phases during freezing and storage at temperatures below freezing. Certain constituents of fish muscle appear to protect the cells during both phases of injury. The survival of bacteria on fish muscle is not influenced by the rate at which the fish muscle was frozen prior to inoculation. There was no significant difference between growth of bacteria on quick frozen and slow frozen fish muscle after thawing. However there appeared to be a slight tendency for the lag phase of growth to be extended on thawed quick frozen fish muscle when compared with thawed slow frozen muscle

    The “oxidase reaction” (using p-amino-dimethyl-aniline oxalate as the reagent) has been used to distinguish oxidase-negative from oxidase-positive bacteria from the sea, when grown on membrane filters. By this means, it has been shown (a) that under conditions of stable stratification of the sea as in the tropics, a relationship exists between the percentage incidence of oxidase negative bacteria in the flora and the depth of the water; (b) that the maximum value for this percentage incidence (100) is reached at or immediately below the upper limit of the oxygen minimum layer; (c) that this percentage value (expressed as Oxⁿvalues) may be used to demonstrate the movements of water masses during upwelling. Such upwelling as indicated by theoretical findings and by temperature determinations along two transects off the west coast of Ceylon during the north east monsoon, has been confirmed by the distribution of Oxⁿvalues at these transects

    A model for net-baryon rapidity distribution

    In nuclear collisions, a sizable fraction of the available energy is carried away by baryons. As the baryon number is conserved, the net-baryon B−BˉB-\bar{B} retains information on the energy-momentum carried by the incoming nuclei. A simple and consistent model for net-baryon production in high energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions is presented. The basic ingredients of the model are valence string formation based on standard PDFs with QCD evolution and string fragmentation via the Schwinger mechanism. The results of the model are presented and compared with data at different centre-of-mass energies and centralities, as well as with existing models. These results show that a good description of the main features of net-baryon data is possible in the framework of a simplistic model, with the advantage of making the fundamental production mechanisms manifest.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures; in fig. 11 a) the vertical scale was correcte

Users can also order special fuel orders and see order status. In vehicle management, the admin can manage vehicles. Also, the user can see fuel details and new prices. Admin manages inventory and storage of fuel tanks. Also, admin and user are very easy to use in this system

    We consider deep inelastic scattering off nuclei in the Regge limit within the Glauber-Gribov model. Using unitarized parton distribution functions for the proton, we find sizeable shadowing effects on the nuclear total and longitudinal structure functions, F2AF_2^A and FLAF_L^A, in the low-x limit. Extending a fan-diagram analysis for the large-mass region of coherent diffraction off nuclei to high Q2, we also find significant shadowing effects in this kinematical regime. Finally, we discuss shortcomings of our approach and possible extensions of the model to other kinematical regimes.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure

    Universal pattern in (e,e'p) at large missing momenta: quasi-deuteron or diffractive final state interactions?

    The intrinsic single particle momentum distributions in nuclei are supposed to show a universal behavior at large momenta, dominated by short-range correlated pairs, or quasi-deuterons. We discuss whether the quasi-deuteron universality survives the final state interaction effects, which are present in the missing momentum spectra measured in A(e,eâ€Čp)A(e,e'p) experiments at GeV energies. We demonstrate that in the observed missing momentum spectra an approximate universality is present, but originating from the universal pattern of diffractive final state interactions of the struck proton independent of the target nucleus.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 3 uuencoded figure
