    Measurement of rolling friction by a damped oscillator

    An experimental method for measuring rolling friction is proposed. The method is mechanically simple. It is based on an oscillator in a uniform magnetic field and does not involve any mechanical forces except for the measured friction. The measured pickup voltage is Fourier analyzed and yields the friction spectral response. The proposed experiment is not tailored for a particular case. Instead, various modes of operation, suitable to different experimental conditions, are discussed

    Supervised Associative Learning in Spiking Neural Network

    In this paper, we propose a simple supervised associative learning approach for spiking neural networks. In an excitatory-inhibitory network paradigm with Izhikevich spiking neurons, synaptic plasticity is implemented on excitatory to excitatory synapses dependent on both spike emission rates and spike timings. As results of learning, the network is able to associate not just familiar stimuli but also novel stimuli observed through synchronised activity within the same subpopulation and between two associated subpopulations

    Regrowth potential of shoot and of roots of Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana Kunth) after defoliation.

    In field and pot trials the effect of different lengths of pre-cutting periods and of cutting intervals on regrowth of shoot and of root were studied in Rhodes grass cv. Katambora. The initial regrowth of the sward after a long (28 days) pre-cutting period was slower than after a short (7 days) pre-cutting period. The reduction of the residual LAI following the extension of the pre-cutting period was associated with reduction in the number of tillers capable of regrowth after defoliation. Root wt. decreased drastically following cutting when the initial root wt. was high (long pre-cutting period), but little when the initial root wt. was small (short pre-cutting period). The decrease in root wt. lasted c. 1 wk after which it increased at a more or less constant rate proportional to the increase of shoot wt. irrespective of the length of the pre-cutting period. The lack of the capability of tillers to regrow after cutting was closely related with developmental stage of tillers. Since tillers of subtropical and tropical grasses have a tendency for early stem elongation, it was concluded that the relatively small number of sites available for regrowth in these grasses is the major deterrent for quick shoot growth of the sward after defoliation.     Critical Exponents of the Three Dimensional Random Field Ising Model

    The phase transition of the three--dimensional random field Ising model with a discrete (Ā±h\pm h) field distribution is investigated by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Values of the critical exponents for the correlation length, specific heat, susceptibility, disconnected susceptibility and magnetization are determined simultaneously via finite size scaling. While the exponents for the magnetization and disconnected susceptibility are consistent with a first order transition, the specific heat appears to saturate indicating no latent heat. Sample to sample fluctuations of the susceptibilty are consistent with the droplet picture for the transition.Comment: Revtex, 10 pages + 4 figures included as Latex files and 1 in Postscrip

    Sharif A Issa, Omar H Hadid, Oliver Baylis, Margaret DayanDepartment of Ophthalmology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, UKBackground: To determine occurrence of features of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) during cataract surgery in patients taking systemic alpha-antagonists (AA).Methods: We prospectively studied patients on AA and who underwent phacoemulsification. The following were recorded: pupil diameter preoperatively, iris flaccidity, iris prolapse and peroperative miosis.Results: We studied 40 eyes of 31 subjects. Mean age was 78 years. Overall, 14 eyes (13 patients) showed signs of IFIS: 9/13 (69%) eyes of patients on tamsulosin, 1/18 (6%) eyes in the doxazosin group, 2/2 prazosin patients, 1/4 eyes in the indoramin group, and 1/2 eyes in two patients on a combination of doxazosin and tamsulosin. Most cases (92%) had only one or two signs of IFIS. Bilateral cataract surgery was undertaken in 9 patients but only one patient (on tamsulosin) had features of IFIS in both eyes, while 4 patients (2 on tamsulosin and 2 on other AA) showed signs of IFIS in one eye only, and 4 patients did not show IFIS in either eye.Conclusion: Most AA were associated with IFIS, but it tends to present as a spectrum of signs rather than full triad originally described. Tamsulosin was most likely to be associated with IFIS; however, its intake does not necessarily mean that IFIS will occur. For patients on AA, the behavior of the iris intraoperatively in one eye is a poor predictor of the other eye.     Can distributed delays perfectly stabilize dynamical networks?

    Signal transmission delays tend to destabilize dynamical networks leading to oscillation, but their dispersion contributes oppositely toward stabilization. We analyze an integro-differential equation that describes the collective dynamics of a neural network with distributed signal delays. With the gamma distributed delays less dispersed than exponential distribution, the system exhibits reentrant phenomena, in which the stability is once lost but then recovered as the mean delay is increased. With delays dispersed more highly than exponential, the system never destabilizes.Comment: 4pages 5figure
