Targeting biotypes of Dactylopius tomentosus to improve effective biocontrol of Cylindropuntia spp. in Australia
Seven Dactylopius tomentosus (Lamarck) biotypes were collected from a range of Cylindropuntia spp. in Mexico, South Africa and United States of America (USA) and imported into quarantine facilities at the Ecosciences Precinct. Host range trials were conducted for each biotype and further assessed against the Cylindropuntia species that are naturalised in Australia to determine the most effective biotype for each species. Host range was confined to the Cylindropuntia for all seven biotypes. In the efficacy trials, C. imbricata (Haw.) F.M.Knuth was killed by the âimbricataâ biotype within 16 weeks and C. kleiniae (DC.) F.M.Knuth died within 26 weeks. Cylindropuntia
fulgida var. mamillata (DC.) Backeb. and C. imbricata were killed by the âfulgidaâ biotype within 18 weeks. On-going trials suggest that C. rosea (DC.) Backeb. could be controlled by either the âacanthocarpaâ or the âacanthocarpa Ă echinocarpaâ biotypes. Cylindropuntia
spinosior (Englem.) F.M.Knuth was not susceptible to any of the D. tomentosus biotypes assessed. A clear designation of which D. tomentosus biotype is most suited for each Cylindropuntia species will improve and increase the effectiveness of biological control of these weed specie

A gated ion source for time-of-flight spectroscopy
A gated ion source using tetrode geometry and having 100% gating efficiency for all ion species is described. Relativistic Ring-Diagram Nuclear Matter Calculations
A relativistic extension of the particle-particle hole-hole ring-diagram
many-body formalism is developed by using the Dirac equation for
single-particle motion in the medium. Applying this new formalism, calculations
are performed for nuclear matter. The results show that the saturation density
is improved and the equation of state becomes softer as compared to
corresponding Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations. Using the Bonn A
potential, nuclear matter is predicted to saturate at an energy per nucleon of
--15.30 MeV and a density equivalent to a Fermi momentum of 1.38 fm, in
excellent agreement with empirical information. The compression modulus is 152

Sensitive detection of colorectal cancer in peripheral blood by septin 9 DNA methylation assay
BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths despite the fact that detection of this cancer in early stages results in over 90% survival rate. Currently less than 45% of at-risk individuals in the US are screened regularly, exposing a need for better screening tests. We performed two case-control studies to validate a blood-based test that identifies methylated DNA in plasma from all stages of CRC. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using a PCR assay for analysis of Septin 9 (SEPT9) hypermethylation in DNA extracted from plasma, clinical performance was optimized on 354 samples (252 CRC, 102 controls) and validated in a blinded, independent study of 309 samples (126 CRC, 183 controls). 168 polyps and 411 additional disease controls were also evaluated. Based on the training study SEPT9-based classification detected 120/252 CRCs (48%) and 7/102 controls (7%). In the test study 73/126 CRCs (58%) and 18/183 control samples (10%) were positive for SEPT9 validating the training set results. Inclusion of an additional measurement replicate increased the sensitivity of the assay in the testing set to 72% (90/125 CRCs detected) while maintaining 90% specificity (19/183 for controls). Positive rates for plasmas from the other cancers (11/96) and non-cancerous conditions (41/315) were low. The rate of polyp detection (>1 cm) was approximately 20%. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Analysis of SEPT9 DNA methylation in plasma represents a straightforward, minimally invasive method to detect all stages of CRC with potential to satisfy unmet needs for increased compliance in the screening population. Further clinical testing is warranted
Integrating group Delphi, fuzzy logic and expert systems for marketing strategy development:the hybridisation and its effectiveness
A hybrid approach for integrating group Delphi, fuzzy logic and expert systems for developing marketing strategies is proposed in this paper. Within this approach, the group Delphi method is employed to help groups of managers undertake SWOT analysis. Fuzzy logic is applied to fuzzify the results of SWOT analysis. Expert systems are utilised to formulate marketing strategies based upon the fuzzified strategic inputs. In addition, guidelines are also provided to help users link the hybrid approach with managerial judgement and intuition. The effectiveness of the hybrid approach has been validated with MBA and MA marketing students. It is concluded that the hybrid approach is more effective in terms of decision confidence, group consensus, helping to understand strategic factors, helping strategic thinking, and coupling analysis with judgement, etc
The University of Michigan cyclotron facility for research in nuclear structure
A number of improvements have been made in The University of Michigan 83" sector focused cyclotron since its original construction. The reasons for the changes and the resulting improvement in the production of stable high-quality beams for nuclear research are described. Doping-insensitive density-of-states suppression in polycrystalline iron-based superconductor SmOFFeAs
We investigated the temperature dependence of the density-of-states in the
iron-based superconductor SmO_1-xF_xFeAs (x=0, 0.12, 0.15, 0.2) with high
resolution angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy. The density-of-states
suppression is observed with decreasing temperature in all samples, revealing
two characteristic energy scales (10meV and 80meV). However, no obvious doping
dependence is observed. We argue that the 10meV suppression is due to an
anomalously doping-independent normal state pseudogap, which becomes the
superconducting gap once in the superconducting state; and alert the
possibility that the 80meV-scale suppression might be an artifact of the
polycrystalline samples.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
On the selection of AGN neutrino source candidates for a source stacking analysis with neutrino telescopes
The sensitivity of a search for sources of TeV neutrinos can be improved by
grouping potential sources together into generic classes in a procedure that is
known as source stacking. In this paper, we define catalogs of Active Galactic
Nuclei (AGN) and use them to perform a source stacking analysis. The grouping
of AGN into classes is done in two steps: first, AGN classes are defined, then,
sources to be stacked are selected assuming that a potential neutrino flux is
linearly correlated with the photon luminosity in a certain energy band (radio,
IR, optical, keV, GeV, TeV). Lacking any secure detailed knowledge on neutrino
production in AGN, this correlation is motivated by hadronic AGN models, as
briefly reviewed in this paper.
The source stacking search for neutrinos from generic AGN classes is
illustrated using the data collected by the AMANDA-II high energy neutrino
detector during the year 2000. No significant excess for any of the suggested
