    Hip Hop Pedagogy as Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy

    This paper argues that Hip Hop Pedagogy is a version of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy and should be a part of art education. Further, we believe that when exploring Hip Hop Pedagogy, teachers need to reference the work of Black female and non-binary artists. After an overview of Hip Hop Pedagogy and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, we argue that these approaches should be a consistent part of art education. Through the work of contemporary visual artist and DJ, Rozeal, we offer suggestions for art educators about how they might transition their practice to embrace some aspects of Hip Hop Pedagogy. Specifically, through sampling and the distinction of cultural appreciation versus appropriation, we believe that art educators can change their practice to make their teaching more relevant to their students and to contemporary culture

    MOLECULAR BASIS AND MODIFICATION OF A NEURAL CREST DEFICIT IN A DOWN SYNDROME MOUSE MODEL

    poster abstractTrisomy 21 occurs in 1/700 live births and leads to phenotypes associat-ed with Down syndrome (DS), including craniofacial dysmorphology and a small mandible. Ts65Dn mice are trisomic for approximately half the genes on human chromosome 21 and display DS-like craniofacial anomalies. Cells cultured from Ts65Dn and euploid 1st pharyngeal arch (PA1) and neural tube (NT) tissues were used to analyze the effects of genetic dysregulation on cell proliferation and migration. In vitro studies revealed a proliferation deficit in trisomic PA1 and migration deficits from trisomic NT originating at embryonic day 9.5 (E9.5). DYRK1A is a gene thought to be involved in DS craniofacial development and we hypothesized that dysregulation of Dyrk1a contributes to altered craniofacial development in Ts65Dn mice. We also hypothesized that Dyrk1a agonists could be used to ameliorate this phenotype. To test our hypotheses, we quantified expression of Dyrk1a using qPCR. At E9.5, Dyrk1a is upregulated in Ts65Dn as relative to euploid PA1. We also showed that cell proliferation and migration could be returned to near euploid levels with the green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and harmine (known Dyrk1a inhibitors) in vitro. To further test our hypothesis, pregnant Ts65Dn and euploid mothers were treated with EGCG on E7 and E8 and E9.5 trisomic and euploid embryos were assessed for embryonic volume, PA1 vol-ume, and NCC number. Preliminary evidence suggests in vivo treatment leads to an increase in embryonic volume, PA1 volume, and NCC number in both euploid and trisomic embryos. Trisomic EGCG-treated embryos had similar PA1 volumes and NCC numbers to euploid embryos treated with PBS. Gene expression analysis of EGCG-treated NCCs is currently underway to better understand the effects of EGCG in these studies. Our results provide information about the molecular basis of DS craniofacial abnormalities and may lead to evidenced-based therapeutic options

    Towards an emotional energy geography: Attending to emotions and affects in a former coal mining community in South Wales, UK

    In this paper, we make a case for bringing energy geography into closer dialogue with emotional geography, and argue that doing so has the potential to greatly improve our understanding of energy systems and their intersection with everyday life, bringing essential but often overlooked aspects into view. We draw on research carried out as part of an arts and humanities-based project in South Wales (UK), a region once dominated by coal extraction. We present and discuss material from sixteen oral histories recorded with long-standing members of the village of Ynysybwl. Reading their accounts through the lens of emotional-affective constructs reveals not only participants’ emotions about aspects of energy production and consumption, but also the atmospheres and affects arising within and out of the energy system. This brings to light the affectual agency of the energy system as an infrastructure assemblage and its role in everyday production of space. Related to this, it surfaces essential aspects of experiences of energy system change. We argue that recognising and exploring affect and emotion is crucial for energy geography as it continues to explore the functionings of energy systems, and energy transitions

    Synthesis, Structure, and Activity of Enhanced Initiators for Olefin Metathesis

    A series of ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts of the general structure (H_2IMes)(PR_3)(Cl)_2Ru CHPh (H_2IMes = 1,3-dimesityl-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene) have been prepared; these complexes are readily accessible in two steps from commercially available (H_2IMes)(PCy_3)(Cl)_2Ru CHPh. Their phosphine dissociation rate constants (k_1), relative rates of phosphine reassociation, and relative reaction rates in ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) and ring-closing metathesis (RCM) have been investigated. The rates of phosphine dissociation (initiation) from these complexes increase with decreasing phosphine donor strength. Complexes containing a triarylphosphine exhibit dramatically improved initiation relative to (H_2IMes)(PCy_3)(Cl)_2Ru CHPh. Conversely, phosphine reassociation shows no direct correlation with phosphine electronics. In general, increased phosphine dissociation leads to faster olefin metathesis reaction rates, which is of direct significance to both organic and polymer metathesis processes

    Fit for fire: A 10-week low-cost hift experiential learning initiative between underrepresented kinesiology undergraduates and hypertensive deconditioned firefighters improves their health and fitness

    The aims of this study were to investigate the feasibility of an experiential learning initiative led by minority exercise science undergraduates and to observe the adaptations after a 10-week high-intensity functional training (HIFT) program in 34 underrepresented, hypertensive, and overweight/obese professional firefighters (PFF; age: 36.8 ± 11.0 years, body weight: 97.3 ± 21.5 kg, height: 181.7 ± 6.6 cm; BMI: 29.2 ± 4.9 kg/m2). Data were analyzed for muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition, agility, flexibility, and readiness for change. The PFFs trained two to three times weekly during their work shifts at vigorous intensity for 40 min. Their resting diastolic blood pressure and resting heart rate significantly decreased. Improvements in agility, muscular strength, and readiness for change were observed. This HIFT experiential learning initiative was feasible and beneficial and improved the PFFs’ health and physical fitness with limited resources. Accredited programs in exercise science participating in low-cost initiatives may aid in mitigating public service workers’ compensation and injury rates to better respond to occupational demands

    Hydrological modelling as a tool for interdisciplinary workshops on future drought

    © 2018, © The Author(s) 2018. Transformative interdisciplinary methods and tools are required to address crucial water-related challenges facing societies in the current era of the Anthropocene. In a community-based study in the Limpopo basin of South Africa, physical and social science methods were brought together to run interdisciplinary workshops aimed at enhancing preparedness for possible future drought. To generate storylines for the workshops, relevant scenarios were modelled using a catchment-scale hydrological model, SHETRAN. Set up using freely available data, local knowledge, and narrative-based group interviews on past experiences of drought, the model acted as a locally-relevant tool for prompting discussions about potential future drought impacts, responses and preparedness, and to stimulate the production of community future narratives. In this paper, we discuss the elements involved in the modelling process: the building of the model through an interdisciplinary approach; setting up the model with limited data; and the translation of the model results into storylines for the workshops. We found that by using this methodology scientific grounding was given to the workshop storylines, and that the local context of the model and the engaging approach of creating narratives encouraged participant involvement in discussions about the future. The method of generating these future stories was an important process for the participants in developing their thinking about possible futures, preparedness and adaptation. In this paper we show how this alternative approach of using a hydrological model has benefits and we discuss the limitations and lessons of the approach for future interdisciplinary research

    Water governance challenges in rural South Africa: exploring institutional coordination in drought management

    Droughts have severe direct impacts on the livelihoods of rural populations. Thus, the management of water for communal agriculture and water supply should be well coordinated to enhance drought resilience. Notwithstanding the interrelations among water management institutions in South Africa, there are complexities in the way these institutions work together, both in preparation for, and during drought times. In this article, we examine the governance of water resources in South Africa with a view to understanding institutional coordination in drought management at different operational scales. Using a qualitative approach, the roles and relationships between water actors at the local and regional level were analyzed for their adequacy in building local level drought resilience in a village in the Limpopo province, South Africa. Key informant interviews conducted revealed operational drought management challenges that emanate from communication barriers, coordination inconsistences, and undefined, unclear actor roles and responsibilities during disasters. The top-down approach to disaster management, while of some value, currently constrains the effectiveness of the local-level institutions implementing local drought risk reduction efforts. Achieving more successful water and drought governance endeavors could be enhanced by greater and wider engagement with community-based actors and water management institutions
